Regan McBain was on a train bound for her father's fort when she first encountered Branded Wolf, a ruggedly handsome Apache. Once arriving in Arizona, Regan never dreamed she would see the mysterious half-breed again. But after fleeing the unwanted advances of one of her father's soldiers and escaping into the wilderness for safely, she stumbled upon Branded Wolf. Knowing she could not abandon him, she nursed his wounds, only to discover her heart was aching for someone to call her own.
A rebel herself, award-winning author Joyce Adams was born in Missouri-south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Since that time, she has lived in five different states and served in the U.S. Army as an administrative specialist and secret courier. She attended the University of Hawaii with course study emphasis on Journalism and Psychology. Literature has beckoned to her, however, from the time she learned how to read and the wonderful world of books opened before her. Longing to be a part of that magic, Joyce published her first novel, Rebel Mine, in July of 1993.
While writing and researching her historicals, Joyce tends to acquire some experiences first-hand. For instance, she has ridden a Brahma bull, attended the Virginia City camel races, taken Faro lessons from a professional gambler, and learned how to pick locks. She's also a bit of an expert on medicine shows, potions and poisons, and the art of belly dancing. When Joyce is not busy writing or educating herself, she spends her time educating others about her craft. Teaching writing classes, giving workshops, and being a national and international speaker certainly keeps her on the go. She also belongs to the organizations Romance Writers of America, Novelists Inc., and the National Historical Trust Society.
In addition to the numerous activities focused around her career, she also loves line dancing and swing dancing. Other hobbies include reading, traveling and attending historical re-enactments and gunfights. Recently, a lot of Joyce's time has been spent at home in Missouri trying to obedience train her extremely determined cocker spaniel.
Regan McBain is a somewhat spoiled Eastern girl who rushes out to the Arizona wilderness to see her father because she received a telegram that he is very sick. On the train to Arizona she bumps into a handsome half-breed Apache man when her little dog Sweet Pea gets lose. Once at the fort where her father is the commander, she finds that he lied about his illness to get her to Arizona so she can marry an officer under his command. Regan is having none of it, but she gets stuck riding with the officer the next day into the wilderness. The officer attacks Regan, causing her to flee into the desert on horseback with her dog.
Regan comes upon the half-breed Apache that she saw on the train. Branded Wolf was shot by white men who are dressing like Indians and attacking settlers to stir up trouble and steal (on a side note: I have read this premise way too many times in NA/western romances). She decides to help Branded Wolf out because she can't leave him to die. Once he is better, he takes her prisoner because he doesn't want her going back to the fort and raising an alarm about him. He is tracking his family's murderers and will not let her interfere. Branded Wolf and Regan start to fall for each other as they spend more time together. He starts to see that she has a lot of strength and pride for a white woman while she is attracted both to his looks and his honor and strength of character. But Brand still needs to avenge his family and Regan belongs in the pampered white world, so how can they have a happy ending?
This book was just okay. I liked the romance aspect, Regan and Brand were good together. She came off as spoiled and immature sometimes but she showed signs of growing up as well. Brand was a good character but we don't learn enough about his life before meeting Regan. The story itself was kind of weak, the plot about the white attackers dressed as Indians was never really addressed well. The weakest part of the whole story was Regan's father. He acts like an idiot who isn't smart enough to dress himself let alone command a fort. He treats Regan like crap, trusts the bad officer to a ridiculous point even after Regan tells him he tried to rape and kill her and won't listen when Regan and her mother try to tell him things.
So overall, the romance and main characters were decent, the plot was a bit weak and some of the minor characters were annoying. Plus the cover fell off my copy which annoyed me. What am I supposed to do with it? I can't stand the idea of throwing away a book.
