A Suffragette. A group of children on a treasure hunt. Wild parties in London. An unexpected love affair. Trouble at the swimming gala. A French mystery. Bravery and loss.
A collection of short stories, these are the previous adventures of some of the characters from the Catching Up series by the same author. They make a great introduction to the main series, an addition for those who have already read the series, and an equally charming stand-alone collection.
Born in 1970 in the English county of Berkshire, Mary now finds herself in the Cotswolds via Devon and Cornwall. She enjoys gardening, art and listening to classical music.
Mary’s favourite colour is green and her favourite city is Copenhagan.
I have been a fan of the entire series so this one was an absolute must read for me. I loved seeing the snippets of what all the characters were up to! My favourite was Caroline's brother. Through her POV he is a very different person to the one we see in this. A fascinating read and a great introduction to the world of Mary Lay.
The Previous Adventures of... is a wonderful addition to the Catching Up series. It's filled with lots of short stories I didn't know I needed to read. There are heartwarming stories like seeing how Philip and Mary met and fell in love, to having the opportunity to spend some time with Freddie. I really enjoyed Helen and Tommy's story and seeing how they first met!
Although each story is short each is filled with descriptions of the era, the characters' personalities and a great plot. I'd also recommend it to anyone new to the series. You don't need to already know the characters to enjoy these snippets.
I’m not really a fan of short stories, but as these were connected with characters from the Catching Up series, I was willing to give them a try. I enjoyed finding out a little more about the minor characters in Caroline’s life, especially her brother Freddie, who plays such a big part in the first book.
