After winning a writing competition, aspiring novelist Catherine Marshall lands tickets to idyllic Hawaii. She is all set to enjoy a relaxing vacation with her boyfriend until he does the unthinkable—he leaves her for another woman. Even more infuriating, he insists that Catherine give him the tickets so he can frolic in the sun with his new girlfriend! Catherine vehemently disagrees and goes on the trip by herself to spite him. She has little expectation for her trip to be anything more than a change of scenery. She’ll still be in the same spot when she gets back—alone and too afraid to leave her soul-sucking job to pursue her dreams. But a surprising turn of events proves that fate has something else in mind. It’s written in the stars.

Talented and gorgeous actor Jake Donovan’s life is all camera lights and paparazzi. Still, he craves the slower pace of everyday life. After the film crew wraps the latest season of his show, he looks forward to some rest in Hawaii. He plans to keep the sights, his camera, and the sun at his fingertips under the radar and enjoy a week where the time is his own. That is until he rescues a beautiful stranger from drowning. Catherine is wonderful—funny, intelligent, mesmerizing, and try as he might, he can’t control his urge to get close to her. He quickly finds himself falling for her. But she’d never understand his life—the distance, the women, the rumors.

Can this couple’s romance stand a chance outside of paradise?

On the surface, “Shooting Stars” by Skye Bothma is a sweet, contemporary love story sure to capture the attention of romance enthusiasts. But dig deeper, and you uncover a multidimensional novel about self-discovery, challenging preconceived notions, and taking a leap of faith. Catherine is stuck in the mundane aspects of her life, feeling heartbroken and invisible, but her trip to Hawaii provides a clarity that she hasn’t felt in some time. A burgeoning relationship with a TV star is every woman’s fantasy. Still, Catherine must grapple with her nagging sense of doubt and insecurity if she wants Jake in her life permanently. Meanwhile, Jake has his own insecurities to face as he fears Catherine won’t be able to cope with the harsh realities of dating a famous actor.

From the intoxicating sights of Hawaii to the absorbing romance, it’s easy to get swept up in “Shooting Stars.” The writing provides a welcome (exotic) escape (especially for readers in the North!). Soaring above Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and the majestic Diamond Head, I was easily transported on the breathtaking helicopter ride with Jake and Catherine. Exploring beaches and historical sites with a handsome suitor – what could be better? The author skillfully infused a palpable tension between the characters that was delicious to experience—stolen glances, unspoken words, and a red-hot attraction. Would Catherine and Jake’s love withstand the obstacles? I was heavily invested until the final page!

For those who love contemporary romance with stunning, picturesque settings, you’ll want to grab a copy of this novel. The unique premise and engaging themes put it a cut above other books from this genre. So, pour yourself a delicious fruity drink, put your feet up, open your heart, and let Skye Bothma take you to paradise with “Shooting Stars.”

I definitely went into this book figuring it would be like most contemporary romances. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, third act breakup, everyone realizes they can’t be without the other, and BAM! Everyone is back together again. While this does have the HEA we all enjoy of a contemporary romance, I really appreciate that this book doesn’t resolve things as quickly as most. Yes, there’s always a breakup but when it occurs and what happens after might surprise you. I enjoyed the pacing and the detailed descriptions of everything. There’s no skimming over what things or people look like, the author is very descriptive. Well done.

I received this book for an honest review via Voracious Readers Only.

A feel-good book where you are rooting for the characters to get together from the very beginning. I really found myself enjoying this book. The characters were well-developed and you understood their thought processes and decisions for 80% of the book.

The only reason for the rating is that I felt like their relationship went a little fast near the end of the book and it seemed like the author was trying to tie up a whole bunch of loose ends. Around that same time the main character seemed a little unhinged too, but that's just my opinion.

I do wholeheartedly recommend this book though overall!

A closed door romance with a HEA ending.
A good storyline with the main characters overcoming obstacles to become who they were meant to be. I give it a 4.5 and recommend.

Shooting Stars penned by the author Skye Bothma is a book that fits my reading taste perfectly. Catherine Marshall and Jake Donovan are the main characters of the story. Catherine is a receptionist and is not a big fan of her job. She was in a long-term relationship with David. They had a plan to go to Hawaii together. When Catherine found that David had betrayed her by getting involved with another woman, they had a breakup.

With a broken heart, Catherine took the trip to Hawaii alone. A renowned actor, Jake Donovan needed an escape after work. He also visited Hawaii. There, he met Catherine. As love starts to spark between them, will it last longer?

Read this story to find out if they are meant to be together or their paths crossed for some purpose. The characters of both Jake and Catherine are my favorite from the book. I could relate myself to the character of Catherine a lot. As someone with self-doubt and being afraid to pursue my dreams, I could totally feel Catherine's character. The story is well paced and I enjoyed every bit of this book. This story inspired me to visit Hawaii soon.

The author has done great work in her debut novel. Those who enjoy contemporary romance should definitely get their hands on this book.

Very well written romance, I would highly recommend. Characters had depth and were very compelling, the story kept me engaged the entire time. I can definitely see re-reading this one and I’m looking forward to many more from this author.

For those who may wonder, it’s mostly a closed door romance, with just one scene that was written heavy on the metaphors and not what I would consider explicit at all. So maybe semi-open door?

This was a good read. The story drew me in and kept me entertained. I felt like some parts of their relationship went a little fast, especially the ending. I feel like the author was trying to tie up a whole bunch of lose ends so she tried to cover a lot quickly.

I loved this book so much. From the very first page I was hooked on the characters of Catherine and Jake. Thankfully the outcome to this book is a good one although getting to the ending was a little problematic but isn’t it always?
Now I need to go to Hawaii to see all the beautiful places described.

I really enjoyed this book. It grabs you right from the get go. The characters were relatable and the story line had all the ups and downs I like.
There are a few spelling and grammar mistakes but this doesn't effect the story.
Hope to see more books by this author in the near future.

In Skye Bothma’s heartfelt novel, Shooting Stars, readers are drawn into a tumultuous world of love, betrayal, and self-discovery. The protagonist, Cathy, navigates through the complexities of her job, ex-partner, and unexpected encounters that force her to reassess her life and dreams. Bothma’s emotionally resonant story captures a quintessential struggle between personal aspirations and societal expectations, making it an engaging and relatable read.

Bothma’s writing is sharp and evocative and pulled me into Cathy’s emotional rollercoaster. Her ability to craft vivid scenes is evident as she intricately details every emotion, from the palpable tension in office confrontations to the crushing disappointment of personal betrayal. The dialogue is particularly strong, offering authenticity to each character's voice and enhancing the unfolding drama. The thoughtful pacing of the narrative allows for deeper introspective moments that enrich the understanding of the protagonist's inner journey, even though I felt it occasionally tempers the story's momentum.

The novel's exploration of personal growth and resilience is not just a personal journey for Cathy, but a poignant commentary on societal expectations. Bothma excels in depicting Cathy’s evolution from a passive observer in her life to an empowered individual who confronts her realities and takes charge. This transformation is not only inspiring but also a critical commentary on the often-overlooked emotional labor that women endure in both professional and personal arenas.

The story challenges readers to think about the importance of authenticity and self-value in a world that frequently demands compromise and conformity. The book’s setting, a bustling corporate office where interpersonal dynamics come into play, serves as a microcosm to explore these themes. At times, the motivations of the secondary characters appear somewhat superficial, but they effectively serve their roles in propelling Cathy's journey forward.

Shooting Stars is a fun and uplifting story that will resonate with readers who enjoy women’s fiction stories of personal struggle and triumph. It’s ideal for readers who are navigating their own crossroads in life or anyone who appreciates a story that combines emotional depth with the complexities of everyday life.

This book completely caught me off guard in the best way. What starts out as a heartbreak story quickly blooms into something much deeper, about identity, courage, and the messy, beautiful unpredictability of life.

Catherine Marshall is the kind of character you root for from the first page. She’s intelligent, relatable, quietly funny, and painfully aware of how small she’s been living. Watching her go from heartbroken and hesitant to brave and boldly herself was so satisfying. And Jake Donovan well, I thought I knew where his story was going (famous guy, broody past, yada yada), but he surprised me too. Their connection felt organic and slow burning in a way that made me feel all the moments, even the quiet ones.

Yes, there’s romance (and it’s lovely), but this book is also about rediscovering your voice, facing your fears, and rewriting the story you thought you had to live. It’s funny in all the right places, emotionally grounded, and gave me a warm, hopeful feeling that lingered long after I finished.

If you enjoy stories about personal growth, unexpected connections, and love that doesn’t try to "fix" people but helps them find their way, you’ll love this.

Shooting Stars is one of those quietly powerful romances that sneaks up on you gentle, heartfelt, and filled with the kind of emotional honesty that lingers. I went into it expecting a sweet escape-to-paradise kind of story, and while I definitely got that, what stayed with me was the depth and vulnerability of the characters.

Catherine is so relatable. She’s smart and capable, but stuck in a life that doesn't reflect who she truly is. Watching her unravel after her boyfriend’s betrayal and then slowly begin to find herself again in Hawaii was both heartbreaking and empowering. I was really rooting for her, not just in love, but in life.

If you're a fan of romance with emotional depth and characters you can truly feel for, Shooting Stars is a tender, soul-refreshing read. It left me smiling and thinking about how love can sometimes show up exactly when we’ve given up on it.

5/5 – A heartfelt escape with substance, sincerity, and just the right amount of sparkle. 🌺✨

I found this book a very enjoyable read. Catherine and Jake are two people who come from very different paths and backgrounds, brought together by a high stakes chance encounter. The writing flowed easily and the journey of the two main characters kept me hooked and wanting to find out what would happen next. I felt that Jake's character was just lovely - very likeable, caring and charismatic and it was easy to get invested in him and his romance with Catherine. I've never been to Hawaii, but I got the impression that it was described very carefully and authentically here.

Wow! New author hit this out of the park.

I finished Skye Bothma's Shooting Stars last night. Wow! What a great read! My usual genres of choice are historical fiction and classics. I saw Skye's Dull Women's Club post about her first book and was excited to read a new author. Skye, a new author, takes us on a fast moving story with a happy ending. Nothing dull about this story, it moves quickly holding your continual interest and need to know what happens next. So enjoyable and entertaining! We can only hope that Skye continues to hone her talent and give us another book in the very near future. Skye, is a shooting star!

A pleasant, feel good book

A cliche, and yet very sweet story, I really enjoyed reading! It was nice to see the behind the scenes of Jake’s life as he and Catherine got to know each other. I liked the characters and was rooting for them in the beginning. Closer to the middle though, it seemed a little more cliche to the point where I found myself skipping pages to get to the juicy stuff. Overall, a satisfying read!

Great job to the author for her debut novel! I’ll admit the beginning was a little hectic, as David - “the ex” sort of “appeared” suddenly/out of nowhere.
However, once the story began to unfold further I was whisked away to Hawaii. Swaying palm trees, beautiful beaches and a hot A-List actor? Yes please! This was an easy read- would be great as a travel read.

This book was a great story if you are interested in predictable romances but it wasn't for me. Would recommend to young adults or as a beach read. It started off well but I gradually lost interest and found it cliche and much like a fairy story so only 2 stars from me I'm afraid!

I rarely write reviews, but this book annoyed me just enough to force me here. When I first began the book, I was certain the main character, Catherine, lived in the UK based on her dialect and phrases, and that of other characters. Then she mentioned a 5 hour flight to Hawaii and I was confused. This led me down the rabbit hole of researching flight times from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand (spoiler: they're all longer than 5 hours). It's later revealed that she lives in San Francisco, CA. I realize soon after that everyone is American in this story, and after flipping to the back and learning the author is from NZ, the language issue made way more sense.

Here's the thing: if you're going to write a book about people from another country, you need to have someone from that country proofread for you. Americans go on vacation, not holiday; it's Mom, not Mum; trash can, not rubbish bin. There were many typos throughout the book and these two issues really pulled me out of the story and made it hard to enjoy. Two people are credited in the acknowledgements for proofreading, and I'm shocked at how much they missed.

I kind of wanted to give it 2 stars, but I really did like the story, so I settled on 3. It's a good story (if a little fantastical, but I went into it expecting that) and I would read a sequel if one was written. But please, if you're going to write American characters, use an American proofreader to make sure you get the dialect right.
