I like 'Dummy' books - readable, amusing, step-by-strp instructions.
However, they are like car manuals in my opinion - fine until you actually need to do something and then it does not quite work out! However, I will keep it for emergencies and hope that my computer 'expert' arrives soon now that I have a list of jobs for him.

I bought this book thinking it was an older version ofTroubleshooting and Maintaining Your PC All-in-One for Dummies, which by the teaser seems to be fairly detailed and helpful. This book is aimed more for beginners, those who are comfortable with basic Windows operations but want to start getting familiar with the workings of the control panel and varied processes like system restore. I found some of the advice problematic, however, like the description of User Account Control being something which pops up when you're in the middle of doing something you probably shouldn't. UAC is extremely touchy about modifying ANYTHING in the Program Files folder, even adding mods to games.

This would definitely help novice users get more familiar with figuring out everyday hiccups, at least those using Vista (...anyone?*), but don't expect any real meat if you're already familiar with Windows.

* I actually still have a Vista system I use for older games.

I love it! I don’t think I could take apart my PC and put back together based on just one read, but having it handy would certainly be a big help! And I do intend to read 3-5 more times until I can rebuild my PC without even opening the book! I LOVE For Dummies Books!😃
