Heliopolis: Rebirth of the City of the Sun

When in the early years of the twentieth century the Belgian businessman Edouard Empain began to turn his dream of building an entirely new satellite city in the desert outside Cairo into a reality, he followed the then novel urban-planning concept of the “garden city.” But in naming his creation, he turned back to one of the most ancient sites in Egypt, the solar temple of Heliopolis, the biblical On, and in its architecture he sought inspiration in the heritage of Cairo’s Islamic tradition. When the city, known as “New Egypt” in Arabic, was completed, a half-hour tram ride through the desert was needed to reach it. Today, Heliopolis has been enveloped within the huge and ever-growing metropolis of Cairo. However, despite rapid development, overpopulation, and increasing traffic, Heliopolis has retained much of its original character and charm, and the captivating atmosphere of Egypt’s Belle Epoque is still tangible. Its houses, mosques, and churches, designed to imitate various styles of the past, have become historic buildings in their own right. This fully illustrated book introduces the reader to the history and development of Heliopolis through its architecture and its inhabitants past and present.

الكتاب متميز بالصور النادرة خصوصا المقارانات القديمة والجديدة واخراجه ممتاز والاسكتشات رائعة لكن المعلومات محدودة جدا باعتباره التوثيق الوحيد للمنطقة ..كنت أنتظر معلومات أكثر تفصيلا عن طرز العمارة والعمارة الداخلية اللي تم تناولها بشكل سطحي للغاية وكنت أتوقع متابعة تاريخية لتطور المنطقة وتفاصيل أكتر عن باقي الأماكن والمرافق والحياة الاجتماعية .. المادة المعلوماتية في الكتاب بدت وكأنها تحقيق صحفي في جريدة أو مجلة وفيما عدا الصور والاسكتشات لم يضف لي الكتاب معلومات تذكر.. ومع ذلك أرى الفكرة ممتازة وأتمنى التوسع في تطبيقها

Takes a good round in Heliopolis , It's History , Urban Morphology and It's Heritage " tangible and in-tangible" The book presented very well, pages files so fast, Catchy one.

كأحد سكان هليوبوليس لطالما استمتعت عيناي بالمباني فى حي الكوربة و في روكسي و ميدان الاسماعيلية و غيرهم. و لم استطع منع نفسي من التحديق دائما فى قصر البارون. و عندما اتاحت لي فرصة معرفة نبذة عن تاريخ هذا المكان. كنت سعيدة مثل من وجد اصله بعد سنوات.
تعرفت من خلال هذا الكتاب على الاحداث السابقة لنشأة مدينة هليوبوليس (مدينة الشمس) و على من انشأها و الاحداث التي رافقت عملية البناء و الإسكان و ما المشاكل التي واجهتهم.
واندهشت كثيرا اثناء القراءة من ان بعض المساكن فى هليوبوليس كانت خاصة بالعمال لانها اقل من باقي الابنية الا اننا فى هذه الايام نعتبر مساكن العمال من افضل المساكن و اغلاهامما يدل على سوء حال فن العمارة فى مصر .
كما احب ان اشكر صاحب نظرية ان فن العمارة لابد ان يهتم بالزينة و المناظر الجميلة و ليس الجانب العملي فقط .
