I really enjoyed the storyline of REVEROF. It’s weird in a good way—imagine if a neuroscience major with questionable ethics had a home lab full of animal brains and then got hired by the government to work on mind control. Yeah, it's that kind of book. The blend of college humor, awkward romance, and disturbing science experiments makes for a really unique read.

I wasn’t bored at any point.

That said, I’m giving it four stars instead of five for a big reason: it really needs a stronger edit. There are repeated phrases, grammar issues, and places where the dialogue feels like it could be tightened up. I don’t expect every indie book to be perfect, but this one has so much potential that it was frustrating to see the polish missing. I genuinely think with a professional editor, it would elevate the whole experience.

Still, the characters—especially Nathan, the brilliant but socially off-center guy, and Kaitlyn, his equally smart and slightly more grounded partner—kept me invested. The science is wild but believable enough to be unsettling, and I appreciated that it didn’t rely on gore to be creepy. The book really shines when it leans into that “this might actually be happening somewhere” feeling.

Bottom line: great story, memorable characters, and a disturbing yet intriguing concept. I just wish the author had taken a little more time on the cleanup.

REVEROF by Timothy Dorr is a book that dives into the realms of neuroscience and shines light into some throught-provoking themes.
The correlation this books makes between Science, ethics and human Connection is what makes it so interesting, very different from the ones that I have read.
You can also tell the Author has done alot of research to write this book making it so unique.

Brains, bombs and a bit of cheesiness

The story mostly follows a (literal) couple of geniuses from their mid-teens up until... I don't want to spoil that part. And there are lots of brains, as well.

Although the book felt a bit all over the place, trying to be many things at once, sometimes too pragmatic, sometimes too poetic, I did enjoy the plot and most the funny moments. We have lots of instances where the action is "cut" by mundane or lovey-dovey scenes, random foreign languages sterilely thrown in (and some unexplainable english between foreigners), I also found some mistakes, extra commas and misused words (but hopefully my copy was not the final release) and very heavy usage of "well and good" by more than one character, which I found pretty distracting and off-putting overall. I think a couple of times per hundred pages would have gotten the point across, but I think I read it at least three times per chapter.

The characters were also very polarizing to me. The main ones weren't very endearing nor consistent. (Minor spoilers) By contrast, the villains were a bit more interesting and consistent to me and I'm assuming we will see more of them in the book's sequel(s).

Overall, I think the premise and world building were interesting and very promising, but the execution of the main characters and their relationships was what most took away from my enjoyment, I would rather have an interesting story with relatively plain characters rather than having somewhat plain characters shoved in my face and "forced" to like them.

I'm not sure who to recommend this book to, I feel like it has spread itself a little too thin for a specific audience, although it might be enjoyable (and more appropriate) for young adults.

I have received this book through the kindness of the author via Booktasters, in exchange for my honest opinion on it.

The book begins with some university romance, as super smart Nathan meets equally intelligent Kaitlyn. The characters are introduced well and have distinct personalities. Nathan begins as quite the oddball, while Kaitlyn, though also very clever, is much more socially informed. I felt that Nathan’s experiments with the dead should have remained a secret. With Kaitlyn aware, we lose some future conflict (just imagine the explosive scene when Kaitlyn finds out what he is doing- digging up bodies!). They eventually have a daughter, Sarah.

The prose is generally good. Dorr can certainly paint a picture. I also get the feeling a lot of hard research has gone into the book, making the scientific aspects authentic. This is especially important for a story like this.

It does require a closer look at some dialogue, which can be too ‘on the nose’. A little more nuance and subtext would go a long way.

To make the story flow and grip the reader, 30% of the book could be cut. There are some scenes, revolving around driving or eating or reminiscing that could be significantly shortened without any impact on the plot. When a terrorist attack occurred in the early section, for example, the proceeding scenes should have flown at warp speed, but there were still conversations about music tastes, food etc. Chapter 22, for example, should be tense, but we begin with paragraphs of text about the city of Marseille, and all previous tension grinds to a halt. I think Dorr could learn from the works of Thomas Harris or Dan Brown. We are here for a science thriller story, after all.

In contrast, chapters like 11, 32 (ignoring the page about coffee), and 48 are what fans of this genre want. This is what the book should be! Science and action. The book is obviously a labour of love, and I could feel Dorr’s passion for the story throughout. It just needs tempering. He is trying to satisfy readers of about six different genres.

My rating is solely based on the central science/political thriller plot, ignoring the fluff. For his next book, hopefully following Sarah, Dorr should choose a genre, rather than trying to force sci-fi, romance, light-hearted travelogue, family drama, and tense thriller into one novel. I will certainly read it.

Firstly, the pros: this novel is, I think, a good read. Immediately, from the start when the main character, Nathan, is introduced, it pulls you into his life as a new student at the University of Minnesota. As I read the book, I found myself engrossed more and more in Nathan’s character development, which is good and realistic, and the academic setting, which felt authentic. As someone who has been involved with a university before myself, Nathan’s journey through the maze of college life, particularly his passion for neuroscience, felt relatable and kept me invested. SpringBrook, as a fictional city, and the inclusion of made-up bands and songs, add a unique touch that make the setting feel lived-in and unique (especially the latter).

What I enjoyed most about the book, overall, were the dialogue and the interactions between characters, which felt natural and were thought-provoking. Yes, the dialogue is good, and that is something worthy of note in science fiction, in my opinion. I also liked the in-text citations throughout the book that link to an appendix of sorts at the end, usually translating things like French words. I read a lot of nonfiction, so it sort of reminded me of the Vancouver or AIP style. The romantic subplot between Nathan and Kaitlyn likewise added an emotional layer that complemented the main narrative well. I think fans of Donna Tartt’s “The Secret History,” Chad Harbach’s “The Art of Fielding,” or Sarah Vaughan’s “Anatomy of a Scandal” may likely find this book enjoyable.

However, a few cons: parts of the book felt a bit slow, particularly the scientific discussions or discussions during experiments, which might feel dense to some readers. That isn’t to say they aren’t necessary, of course. I also felt that the focus on Nathan’s perspective sometimes overshadowed other interesting characters. Despite these minor things, “REVEROF” is a solid read, very unique in its presentation, that balances the intellectual depth of its plot with emotion between its characters. The author’s passion for storytelling and the subject matter shine through, making this novel a worthwhile addition to any literary collection.

“Reverof” by Timothy Dorr is science-fiction thriller, packed with action and an intriguing plot.

Nathan and Kaitlyn, two neuroscientists, meet at university, and although having very different personalities, share a passion for science, which ultimately transforms their friendship, into love, creating a power-couple in the field of science.

Upon their progress as a couple, creating a family and working as a team, for their boss Zachery, Nathan and Kaitlyn create a complex system where DNA remains in human brain tissue are used to connect with persons who have already been deceased, for the public to use with a fee. Initially the experiments are conveyed in unorthodox methods, whereby they are digging dead people, to collect brains.

The US government endorses the project as a means of eliminating tax and for acquiring the project fees to be used as the primal source of revenue, together by assisting people with the loss of loved ones. As the years pass and the project develops; and with the advancement of technology, the system is empowered to allow deceased persons to talk with one another.

At the same time that these events are unfolding, there is a sinister plot emerging from a small terrorist group, who are anti-American and want revenge for their personal loses. The author does a fine job in recreating their personal traumas, by glimpsing back at the moment in their past, which has defined the outcome of the person they had become. The French terrorist and leader of the band, falls in love with a Russian oligarch, and together embark on full throttle, with violence to obtain their ultimate revenge, by destroying Americans and Nathan’s and Kaitlyn’s creation.

The novel will enthral the reader with an array of characters and will have the reader questioning whether such technology is morally correct.

Rated 3 stars as the relationship between Nathan and Kaitlyn seemed static and unrealistic.

The title, Reverof, indicated that this could be an unusual book. It was - in many respects. Beginning with the book cover, the dimension is square nor is it illustrated. The background colour is red which a reader might associate with blood and violence. This supposition would be accurate for some of the scenes.

The theme of a search for eternal life drew me in, and the opening chapters introduced the two main protagonists, a husband and wife team, who would collaborate and find a formula for this. The satire was particularly strong when they went on graveyard robbing expeditions with the objective of removing brains from fresh cadavers while constantly addressing each other with 'dear' in practically every sentence during their macabre activities.
However, some malapropisms throughout the text made me hesitate as these appeared to be unintentional. Brackets being used to indicate who the speaker was in several dialogues is also unusual. Switching between genres and introducing others made for a very lengthy read with extremely detailed descriptions of various characters and settings.

Timothy Dorr's use of memory flashbacks by most of the characters helped the reader to understand the motives and behaviors of them. One of the most satirical sections is where a statue of the food obsessed pet squirrel, Gerard, is erected to honor his inspirational role in his owner's achievement of finding the formula for eternal life. Another is where the female Vice President of the United States is carrying a sign with protesters who are in opposition to her husband, the President, approving the expansion of the extraction of human DNA.

All in all, the theme is interesting, and the satirical touches appealed to me.

A Macabre yet Imaginative Spy Action Tale with Twists and Odd Humor.

"Reverof" by Tim Dorr is an imaginative and creative novel that delves into the what would think would be a macabre world of communicating with the dead. With a complex web of subplots, it explores somewhat superficially unfortunately, with only a single attempt looking at the negative consequences, the nuances and ethical dilemmas of this eerie concept. The story includes unexpected twists and turns that keep the reader engaged. Dorr’s focus on both the heroes and villains does add depth to the multigenerational spy narrative, providing a unique perspective.
However, the dialogue occasionally feels stiff and robotic, with some interactions—especially between Nathan and Kaitlyn, seeming contrived. Their quick transition to a romantic relationship, given Nathan’s unsettling experiments, stretches believability. Certain scenes, like the animal and human experiments, can be hard to stomach, and the story sometimes drags with an overly detailed explanation of the science behind Nathan's serum and techniques.
Despite these moments, the subplot involving the French terrorist, Russian oligarch, and music band is exceptional, reminiscent of classic spy thrillers. The inclusion of quirky elements, such as the 10-foot cement squirrel statue of Gerard, added an unexpected touch of humor. While some plot points strain plausibility, such as Kaitlyn's access to confidential documents without a background check, "Reverof" offers a mind-bending experience filled with captivating and diverse characters. It's a book for those seeking an adventurous read with a blend of dark themes and unexpected comedy.

Timothy Dorr’s REVEROF is a bold and imaginative science fiction novel that delves into the ethical and existential implications of groundbreaking neuroscience. The story follows Nathan Christensen, an ambitious neuroscientist at the University of Minnesota, and his partner Kaitlyn, as they develop a revolutionary technology enabling communication with the deceased. Their innovation, while scientifically astounding, attracts the attention of a French terrorist and a wealthy Russian oligarch, both with their own agendas, leading to a global conflict that intertwines science, politics, and personal vendettas.

Dorr’s narrative is rich with philosophical inquiry, exploring themes of mortality, the human desire for connection, and the consequences of technological advancement. The novel’s strength lies in its ability to weave complex scientific concepts with a suspenseful plot, though some readers have noted that the romantic development between Nathan and Kaitlyn feels underdeveloped and the dialogue occasionally stilted. Despite these critiques, the book offers a compelling exploration of its themes, making it a thought-provoking read for fans of speculative fiction.

Overall, REVEROF stands out for its ambitious storytelling and the ethical questions it raises, offering readers a narrative that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

Reverof by Timothy Dorr is both a love story and a philosophical voyage, a novel that manages to be deeply emotional without surrendering its intellectual edge. At its core, it’s a tale of devotion—between people, between art and meaning, between the human spirit and the vast unknown. Dorr builds his world less through concrete science fiction mechanics and more through sensation: ocean journeys, pulsing music scenes, and dreamlike sequences that feel suspended between the real and the metaphysical.
What makes Reverof striking is how personal it feels, even as it gestures toward cosmic themes. The relationship at its center gives the book gravity, keeping the story human while everything around it shifts and shimmers. Dorr’s prose often reads like song lyrics—lush, rhythmic, and occasionally elliptical—but it carries a sincerity that keeps it from feeling indulgent.
If there’s a challenge, it’s that the narrative sometimes prioritizes atmosphere over coherence. Yet that haziness seems deliberate, mirroring the book’s fascination with memory, love, and the blurry space between reality and imagination. In the end, Reverof succeeds not because it explains its world, but because it evokes it—leaving the reader less with answers than with an emotional resonance that lingers long after the final page.

"REVEROF" by Timothy Dorr is a complex book full of intrigue and amazing challenges. I really enjoyed delving into the story, and I can only imagine other readers will too.

Dorr gives his readers a tale where he twists realities and perceptions. The two characters, Nathan and Kaitlyn are authentic and believable. Nathan is a neuroscientist who joins the University of Minnesota, and while there, he discovers something that will change the way we look at life and death. With Kaitlyn’s help they work together to stretch what we might perceive as normal. A terrorist group were alerted to the powerful possibilities of their work and add in a rich Russian philanthropist, of sorts, and you have a great page-turner on your hands.

Dorr writes very well. He was able to create an amazing science fiction world not only sound real but almost every day. I was drawn into the characters’ development and was carried away with a surreal plot development that was certainly credible.

If you would love to embed yourself into the extraordinary imagination of Timothy Dorr then REVEROF is definitely for you. There is a lot to take in and contemplate, but reading this book is worth the journey.

"Reverof," the first instalment in Timothy Dorr's science fiction series, introduces us to Nathan Christensen, a driven young man on a determined path to becoming a leading neuroscientist. Dorr paints a compelling portrait of Nathan's ambition, placing him in a world rife with peril, shadowy intrigue, and the ever-present threat of terrorism. The author clearly possesses a talent for crafting fiction, weaving a narrative web that grips the reader from the opening pages and refuses to release its hold until the very last word.

However, while the narrative is undeniably engaging, "Reverof" doesn't quite achieve the seamless pacing essential for a truly top-tier thriller. The book juggles several distinct elements: the intricate and sometimes unsettling details of animal experimentation (which may prove challenging for sensitive readers), the emotional highs of Nathan's personal relationships, and the looming danger of a terrorist plot. While each of these threads has the potential to be compelling, the transitions between them sometimes feel abrupt, disrupting the overall flow and momentum of the story. A more refined balance between these elements would elevate "Reverof" from an engaging read to a truly captivating and unforgettable thriller.

This book truly is a fascinating exploration of cutting-edge neuroscience, international intrigue, and the power of human connection. Dorr crafts an immersive, complex, and thoughtful narrative that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. The characters are rich and well-developed - I found myself deeply invested in Nathan and Kaitlyn's journey, and I was continually intrigued by the dynamics of the various international characters woven into the narrative. Despite the book's focus on vast themes such as life, death, and immortality, "REVEROF" never loses sight of the individual characters at its heart. Dorr expertly balances the macro with the micro, creating a narrative that is as emotionally impactful as it is intellectually stimulating. I highly recommend it. Whether you're a fan of science fiction, a lover of intricate international drama, or someone who appreciates a good, human story, this book has something to offer. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to seeing what Dorr comes up with next. This is a book I would definitely recommend adding to your summer reading list. Happy reading!

I really enjoyed Reverof. It's a sweeping science fiction tale, spanning years of the characters' lives and circling the globe, hence it's a very long book, but it was well-worth the three late nights I just spent with it. Protagonists Nathan Christensen (what a great name!) and Kaitlyn Stanley are genius-level neuroscientists who meet when they are still at university and have a mutual instant attraction, the beginning of the novel showing us their early days of discovering just how strange their interests in the sciences really go... for Nathan is doing his own at-home animal experiments and Kaitlyn just isn't bothered by this, so long as it's in the pursuit of science. As they graduate, they take their first employment, and ramp up the oddity and questionable nature of their experiments. But they eventually come up with a world-changing technology that garners the interest of some very bad people. What I mostly loved about this epic tale is that it combined two of my favorite genres - thriller and sci-fi. I definitely recommend this well-written, well-edited novel.

Author Timothy Dorr challenges life and death through his extraordinary exploration of science, philosophy, and the boundaries of reality.
Balancing high-concept neuroscience with the adrenaline of a global spy thriller, his mesmerizing tale, with more twists and turns than a mountain road, captured my imagination.
Dorr's immersive writing blends scientific authenticity with rich character development as Nathan Christensen, the eccentric neuroscientist, and Kaitlyn Stanley, his partner, form a compelling duo. Their foray into groundbreaking discoveries pushes scientific and ethical limits.
To complicate matters further, their work on life and death invites not only intellectual curiosity but also the intervention of darker forces—terrorists and power-hungry figures who wish to control their inventions for nefarious purposes.
Expect philosophical musings on mortality, thrilling action scenes, international showdowns, personal struggles, and a multifaceted read from this captivating, thought-provoking novel. A riveting read, indeed!

Reverof begins innocently with an intelligent college couple who have a future in neuroscience. But there is an undercurrent of coming horror or trouble beneath Kaitlyn and Nathan's relationship, school, and careers. The suspense begins to build quickly. Experiments in the basement on living beings set the tone for what felt like science fiction horror blended with terrorist espionage as I became immersed in the story.

The subject matter of neuroscience experiments and government agencies in mind control was interesting and well-researched. I never thought I’d consider a squirrel creepy, but Dorr manages it.

Darker aspects of torture and animal experiments, which were expected in this genre, were realistically depicted. Dorr’s style of writing is descriptive and unique.

The twists in the story were unexpected, and the ending was perfect. I highly recommend this book to science fiction and mystery readers. The possibility of immortality is always fascinating, and this story was a pleasant surprise.

A gem that could really shine with a little extra polishing

I love reading indie authors since they have more freedom of creativity since they’re not beholden to a publisher, and you really get a sense of their own personality and voice, however it can take a little bit to adjust to that voice since it can be different from usual English writing style. Once I was used to Dorr’s style, I found REVEROF easy to read. This is an interesting story of the ethics and perils of scientific advancement (trigger warnings: animal and human experimentation), especially when those advancements get into the wrong hands. This is a sci-fi story that starts off as a love story between two scientific geniuses and continues with a blend of philosophical musings about the nature of life, some horror elements, and international espionage. The deep dives into the science were very interesting.

I do think a good editor could really make this book shine by improving the pacing, sentence structure, and word choice without changing the author’s voice.

Nathan Christensen, an ambitious neuroscientist, and his brilliant partner Kaitlyn craft a groundbreaking discovery at the University of Minnesota, redefining life and death. Their journey is a whirlwind of innovation, romance, and global intrigue, set against vibrant ocean voyages and pulsating music scenes. Dorr’s vivid storytelling paints a world both imaginative and believable, blending scientific depth with heart-pounding suspense. The novel’s unexpected twists kept me glued to the pages, while its exploration of mortality sparked deep reflection. Despite a few dense scientific passages, the rich character development and brisk pacing make this a standout read. The shadowy motives of a French terrorist and a Russian magnate add layers of tension, elevating this tale into a thought-provoking masterpiece. I highly recommend "REVEROF" to fans of science fiction and thrillers craving a fresh, mind-expanding story.

"REVEROF" presents an intriguing fusion of cutting-edge neuroscience and global suspense. Nathan Christensen's quest for scientific greatness unfolds in tandem with his partnership with the brilliant neuroscientist Kaitlyn. Together, they stumble upon a groundbreaking discovery that promises to reshape perceptions of life and death. Dorr skillfully weaves an intricate narrative, introducing a cast of characters entangled in an international web of intrigue, featuring a French terrorist and a wealthy Russian seeking solace.

The novel deftly explores themes of mortality, immortality, and the enduring power of human connection. While the book captures the reader's attention with its adventurous ocean treks and vibrant scenes, it occasionally loses focus on the central characters. Dorr's narrative prowess shines through, balancing the grand scope of its themes with the intimate stories of Nathan and Kaitlyn. "REVEROF" is a commendable read for those intrigued by science fiction and international drama. While not without its minor distractions, the novel delivers a captivating experience, offering a unique blend of scientific curiosity and global suspense.

REVEROF is an intriguing and innovative science fiction with elements of romance and adventure.  It's clear that Timothy Dorr has spent many hours researching the science for this book which makes it feel authentic and original. The characters are well developed and Nathan and Kaitlyn are an interesting pair. Nathan Christensen is an eager neuroscientist and joins the University of Minnesota to make a revolutionary discovery that might redefine life, death and the possibility of immortality. He teams up with fellow scientist Kaitlyn and together they push the boundaries of science, but their work provokes a terrorist organisation to get involved and it causes a global showdown.  To add another layer of complexity Dorr also includes a wealthy Russian on a quest for solace, highlighting the importance of human connection.  I enjoyed this and look forward to more work from Timothy Dorr.

Reverof pulled me in from the very first chapter and didn’t let go until the final page. I love stories that make me think, and this novel did exactly that. The way the plot unfolded felt so fresh, and I genuinely enjoyed piecing things together as I read. It’s one of those books where you keep thinking about it long after you put it down.

What stood out most for me was how the story felt personal, even though the setting and events were so different from my everyday life. The emotions and struggles were so real, and I found myself rooting for the characters more than I expected.

This isn’t just another cookie-cutter novel—it’s unique in a way that’s hard to describe without giving anything away. If you’re into stories that challenge your perspective and keep you hooked, this one’s worth every minute.

The scenes of devotion and adventurous ocean treks are vivid and breathtakingly described. And let's not forget the hottest music bands on the planet that add a unique and pulsating rhythm to the story. This science fiction tale isn't just a story; it's a foretelling journey of a lifetime that will change your perspective on life, and even death.

However, I must say, the cover design didn't quite capture the essence and the depth of the narrative, and seemed a bit neglected. But don't let that deter you. Once you dive into the pages, you'll find an incredible adventure waiting for you. This book is a testament to the fact that you should never judge a book by its cover. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good mix of adventure, romance, and thought-provoking science fiction!

"Reverof" is a unique blend of science fiction, espionage, and dark humor. It follows neuroscientists Nathan and Kaitlyn, whose discovery of communication with the dead draws dangerous attention from a French terrorist and a Russian oligarch.

The plot is imaginative, with unexpected twists and a mix of scientific intrigue and thriller elements. However, some parts—like the romance—feel rushed, and the dialogue can be a bit stiff. Despite this, the novel delivers an engaging adventure with quirky surprises.

If you enjoy thought-provoking sci-fi with a touch of spy thriller, Reverof is worth a read.
