1800s. San Antonio, Texas: In room 207 at the Longhorn Saloon, in the long shadow of the Alamo itself, a woman renowned for her beauty was brutally murdered. Her killer was never found.

One year ago: In that same historic room, another woman vanished without a trace. Her blood was everywhere…but her body was never recovered.

Now: In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies.

All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now.

Texas Ranger Logan Raintree cannot sit by and let his city's most vulnerable citizens be slain. So when he is approached to lead a brand-new group of elite paranormal investigators working the case, he has no choice but to accept the challenge. And with it, his powerful ability to commune with the dead.

Among Logan's new team is Kelsey O'Brien, a U.S. marshal known for her razor-sharp intuition and a toughness that belies her delicate exterior. Kelsey has been waiting all her life to work with someone who can understand her ability to "see" the past unfolding in the present. Now she has her chance.

Together, Kelsey and Logan follow their instincts to the Alamo and to the newly reopened Longhorn, which once tempted heroes with drink, cards and women. If the spirits of those long-dead Texans are really appearing to the victims before their deaths, only Kelsey and Logan have the skills to find out why.

And if something more earthly is menacing the city's oldest, darkest corners, only they can stop it—before more innocent women join the company of San Antonio's restless ghosts….

So here's the deal -

This story revolves around a local legend in San Antonio Texas. 1800s at the Longhorn Saloon, which is located a stones throw from the Alamo, room 207 was the place of a murder. A beautiful young woman is killed for a diamond that her lover won in a card game, but the gem was never found by the murderer.

Present Day. Kelsey O'Brien, a US Marshall is staying at the saloon and inn, now owned by childhood friend Sandy. She has been offered a position with the FBI in their Krewe of Hunters Division. Also offered a position to lead the group is Logan Raintree, a local Texas Ranger. Both have certain "talents" that would be integral to the group. Both being able to commune with the dead, they hit it off right away and are able to work together. The case they are working on together is that of several females that have been uncovered in the surrounding area of the Alamo and Longhorn Saloon and Inn. As they uncover more evidence it all points back to the diamond. It appears that all of these missing females claimed that they were psychic and the killer has been using them to try and get in contact with the dead woman in 207 to find out where the diamond is located. Now Sandy has gone missing and feared that the killer may have her. Kelsey and Logan are racing to find her and stop the murder of another woman that is also a friend.

This is my first foray with Heather Graham. It was a pretty good story, and I would be willing to give her another go. The writting was pretty smooth aside from a few glitches where a turn of events was suddenly started and I had to go back to the begining of the paragraph to get my bearings. Suddenly I was across town or with another part of the group. I was a little disappointed with the few love scenes. I had hotter sex this afternoon, and I'm married... However, I'm not that pissy and have read a book full of misspellings and still loved the story itself. So I'm going to give her another whirl in the sometime future. I don't know, maybe being that she has so many previous published works I was expecting more. Anywhooo. Yeah, that's it. And this can be found on The Diva's Blog to be published around 5/9/2012

3 Stars

Series note: This is Krewe of Hunters book #5. The focus is on a completely new set of characters although two of the original cast appear as supporting characters. As with all of the books in the series, the plot is standalone.

US Marshal Kelsey O'Brian and Texas Ranger Logan Raintree are recruited for a second team of FBI paranormal investigators. Their first case revolves around the discovery of several sets of human remains linked either to the city's historic Alamo memorial or to the recently reopened Longhorn saloon and hotel, which is infamous for the murder of a woman in the late 1880s as well as the more recent disappearance of another. How are the Alamo and room 207 at the Longhorn related to the murders?

It seems that 2022 is my year for returning to stagnating series. Despite the long interval between installments, it is easy to return to Graham's world with the introduction of a completely new set of characters. Nevertheless, my issues with her writing remain as there is still unnecessary and annoying repetition of wording, phrasing and plot points.

While Graham's research into the history of the Alamo is excellent and the details are interesting, these sections read like a history lesson and are not merged well within the dialogue or the narrative.

The serial killer storyline plot is good; however, the identities of the victims are only revealed toward the end, which makes it difficult to care about their fates. Unlike some of the previous books, the paranormal elements work well in the story as the ghosts contribute both to the background on the murders as well as to the investigation. Even though it is easy to guess the culprit, the climax and resolution are suspenseful and satisfying.

Finally, it is evident from reading this as well as the first four installments that romance is not Graham's forte. Kelsey and Logan's relationship feels forced and lacking in emotional intimacy. Moreover, the issue of his late wife arises often and Kelsey's fear that he is still in love with her is never fully addressed.

Overall, this series has such potential but it consistently misses the mark. One final observation regarding the audiobook - Luke Daniels has a broad vocal range and his voices for the female characters are well done, which is not always the case for a male narrator.

Update 2022: These are old notes from 2017 that I am moving to the review field. To remind me to avoid the author. Not sure why I ever gave it a 3 star review, but so be it.

A female US Marshall from Florida and a Texas Ranger get asked to join the FBI to build a new "Krewe Of Hunters" team. Currently they solve a serial killing around Alamo, Texas/Mexican border, that may had something to do with an old Diamond Ring.
This whole story was made up without motives, the killings overdone, unnecessary, the killer should have been more competent, the ghosts were boring, the romance also boring, too much history around Alamo that I didn't understand because I didn't know anything about it to begin with.

I never seen to read Heather Graham's books in order, but that does not seem to matter. I really enjoy all of them. The murderer in this one took me by surprise. Always a pleasure to read the ins and outs of how the author builds the story and describes and presents her characters.

Texas Ranger Logan Raintree is in San Antonio to investigate a murder and meet with Jackson Crowe of the FBI. U.S. Marshall Kelsey O'Brien is there to meet with Jackson Crowe and stay with her friend, who owns a haunted hotel, The Longhorn Saloon. A prostitute was murdered in Room 207 in the 1800s. Now, another young woman has disappeared from Room 207, leaving behind enormous splashes of blood, but no body. As Kelsey and Logan investigate, it becomes clear there is a serial killer in San Antonio, who is using the legend of The Longhorn Saloon to cover up his victims. Will they be able to find out who the killer is before he strikes again? Logan talks to the dead and Kelsey can see into the past. This case will bind them together.

I'll give all of the long time Heather Graham fans a warning. The old Graham is probably never going to come back. I'd liken her older books to rich Godiva chocolate: rich and oh-so-sinfully bad for you, whereas her newer books are like Hershey chocolate: good, but not nearly as good as the Godiva was. This is pretty much the case here in this book.

I'll be honest and say that while this wasn't an "oh my gosh, read it until my eyeballs pop out" type of book, it wasn't bad and is an improvement over some of Graham's previous books. (This is far better than Dust to Dust was.) The Unseen is pretty much a continuation of the Krewe of Hunters series, but with a new group of characters since the previous bunch had all been paired off with their love interests. This book brings us a new pairing, a new murder mystery, and a new set of ghosts.

I really wanted to judge this book on its own merit (for good or bad), but some of the similarities between the pairing in this book and the pairing in the first KoH book sort of prevented that. Like our pairing in Phantom Evil, we're given two people in law enforcement, with the male love interest being a Native American. This is generally where the similarities ended, but it's enough to where I kind of felt a little disappointed that Graham didn't shake things up a little more. I'd have loved to have seen a pairing where one of the duo was a brash young thing that shoehorned their way into the investigation, but hopefully we'll get that in another book. The pairing in this book is nice, but didn't really set off an avalanche of steamy sparks. It's sort of just there and secondary to the book's mystery.

The mystery actually wasn't bad. I did enjoy the Texas setting as well as the inclusion of the infamous Alamo. We're given a good start, a tale of a star-crossed Southern belle that fell into a seedy lifestyle and was murdered because of her ill fated decisions and a valuable diamond ring. It's what really brought me into the book and pushed me past the tepid love scenes between Logan and Kelsey. It eventually turned a little predictable, but overall it wasn't half bad. I just wish that the mystery and murders had been played up a little more, with the main characters doing a little more detecting and investigating. Things just sort of progressed from point A to point B and it didn't really seem that our lead characters did anything on their own without a ghost to point the way for them. (Although if I can compare it to the mystery in the first KoH book, the mystery here is way better laid out.) I was still slightly surprised by the whodunit, although I wasn't too far off in my estimation.

Overall this is a good but not great Graham novel. It's something that is absolutely worth a library read, but I'd hesitate to buy this at a hardback price. (If it was paperback then it'd be easier to say "buy it".) Graham has shown some improvement as of late and this book is no exception, but I think this book would have done better if it had just spent a little more time in the stew pot. If you're looking for a whiz-banger of a read, you'll be disappointed, but if you're looking for a decent read to while away a few hours with in front of the fireplace, then this is worth checking out.

*publisher’s comment*

A Texas Ranger and a US Marshall has been asked to work together, somebody has been killing women and they have been doing it for some time, they must be stopped. But what does an age old murder from the 1800’s have to do with these deaths? In the backdrop of San Antonio with the Alamo being a central theme, a riveting story comes together that combine’s contemporary forensics with the tale of a murder that took place several hundred years ago. No one does a better romantic suspense ghost story than Heather Graham!

Now this is a story. There is a whole series & this is book ten. I actually have the whole series & I'm going to read them for Samhain. But for now this book?!! Is just too awesome. The characters were well written & amazingly realistic. The two stories intertwined & OMGosh I fell so bad for the original character, by choosing the wrong man her story and her life were changed forever. The modern story is both engaging & gruesome, with enough action & twits to keep you guessing until the very end. this time?? I couldn't quite figure out who the killer was until the last moment. I so didn't see that ending coming.

The romance was rip the sheets off the bed hot. Logan is a intriguing man, the Krewe hunters leader's story sounds very intriguing & I'm adding them all to the pile. I can't wait to dive into the other books from the series Heather's books are always a good read, one book off, twelve more to go!!

I Hope you enjoy this one. Happy Reading Click below to add to your reading pile.

Just say no to The Unseen by Heather Graham. This is the fifth book in the Krewe of Hunters series. (You do not have to read the books in order.) The history in this book needs a major tune-up. Also, one of the main characters in the book, Kelsey, is the very definition of annoying. She follows the same pattern in this book as in previous outings, falling in love too quickly. The story was also too easy to figure out. While this book had other problems, I am so done wasting my time on this novel. That is why I am giving the book one star.

Had potential, but poorly written. Many characters and only two were attempted to be developed. The lengthy sex scenes were the best description going on here, but way too much of it. And though it was clearly the goal of the author to want me to LOVE Texas and everything about it (she even gives the coveted recipe for texas chili to you at the end) I ended up loathing it and every pass she made at me with it. Far too much cheesiness going on here, even for me.

I liked this book and liked the character of Logan Raintree. One good thing about this book compared to others in the series is the paranormal aspect is laid out at the very beginning and no one questions anyone else’s talents.

Being a Texan, I really enjoyed seeing a mystery set in Texas. The mystery is great and the linking of the history to the present was fabulous as I am sucker for those type of stories. I also enjoyed how some forensic science was brought into the team. It gave the story a firmer base in reality. Even though I love the paranormal stuff, it shows the team relying on more than just their own psychic talents to solve the case.

I also liked the idea of Adam and Jackson wanting to set up multiple teams who will work cases all over. I love the original Krewe but having multiple teams allows for the author to expand the series a little. I wish we would have gotten to know the newer members better. This book is very focused on Logan and Kelsey. I also hope the author mixes up the teams occasionally like having Jenna work a case with Tyler.

This book suffers from three main issues for me. One is the romance between Kelsey and Logan is a little too similar to Jackson and Angela’s from the first book in the series. The other issue is that the killer is obvious and I am surprised at how much the characters never looked at them as potential suspect. The final issue is that Kelsey starts out very strong but devolves into a stereotypical horror movie damsel in distress. She at times became very annoying.

This one might be my favorite Krewe of Hunters book so far! The Unseen follows Kelsey O’Brian and Logan Raintree — both paranormal investigators brought together by the FBI’s Krewe of Hunters. Logan’s been asked to lead a new team, and Kelsey, a U.S. Marshal (and cousin to a familiar Krewe member from earlier books), joins him on their first case in San Antonio, Texas.

While visiting a friend who owns an old saloon called The Longhorn, Kelsey learns about a series of strange murders — one dating back to the 1800s when a young woman was found dead in Room 207, and another much more recent. When blood is discovered again in that same room, history seems to be repeating itself, and the two of them are pulled deep into a mystery filled with ghostly visions, local legends, and plenty of danger.

I loved the eerie setting and the way the story tied together past and present — Heather Graham does that blend of history and haunting so well. The pacing was perfect, with enough suspense to keep me turning pages late at night. The chemistry between Kelsey and Logan felt genuine, and their shared connection to the paranormal made their relationship feel natural instead of forced.

There were a few twists I didn’t see coming, and the reveal at the end completely worked for me. This book had that classic Krewe mix of murder, mystery, ghosts, and romance that keeps me hooked every time.

If you’re a fan of the series, The Unseen is a must-read — spooky, engaging, and full of heart. Definitely one of the strongest installments so far.

"In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies. All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now."

Wow! What a hook! Texas Ranger Logan Raintree has a knack, a gift, for solving cases, although his biggest regret is not being able to prevent the death of his own wife at the hands of the brother of a man who Logan arrested and sent to death row. He's spent the last year trying to move on with his life, after taking two years off to mourn his wife, when he is approached by an FBI agent, a member of the Krewe of Hunters, an elite group of paranormal investigators. He's not sure if it's the right fit for him, but he agrees to investigate the string of murders happening in his own town.

Kelsey O’Brien, a U.S. marshal, has a gift of her own, and is approached by the same FBI agent to join the new team he is putting together, and has her own reservations, but she, too, agrees to stay long enough to find the person kidnapping and killing women.

I enjoyed this book very much. I hadn't realized it was part of a series when I started it, but it worked very well as a stand-alone book. It was well written with an interesting mystery, and the characters were all fleshed out and given room to learn and grow throughout the story. I loved that the romance didn't overshadow the mystery of the missing women. The setting was described beautifully, and I was able to imagine it clearly even though I've never been to San Antonio, Texas. I really want to go visit the Alamo now, though, after reading this book.

In summary, although I haven't read the other books in this series, I enjoyed this book very much and had no problem following along. I can definitely recommend it and look forward to reading the other books in the series.

5/5 stars.

I received a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for my honest opinion.

A hardened Texas Ranger, Logan Raintree, and a no nonsense US Marshal, Kelsey O’Brien, lead this new unit of “gifted” specialists to try to end the killing spree... A twisting turning read filled with ghostly encounters and spiritual guides that keeps readers guessing until the very end.:)

Good read, fast paced. New characters and a new team introduced. Set in San Antonio around the Alamo. Numerous young women have been found murdered and their bodies basically left in the open, in mulch piles, rubbish tips, a lake and all stabbed or choked except one who drowned. They apparently have nothing in common except an interest in history or gems, specifically history of the Alamo and surrounding areas.

Very Entertaining

I enjoyed reading this book. It had a great mix of ingredients... ghosts, a mystery, a serial killer, a smart and feisty heroine and romance! What more could you want! And then the author added some Texan recipes as an encore.

A short review to update challenges

I was able to get Phantom Evil,  the first book of this Krewe Of Hunters series from the Audible Romance package.  Heart of Evil  and Sacred Evil were available with audio through Kindle Unlimited.   The Unseen is not in either program so I requested the CDs through Interlibrary Loan.

Luke Daniels'  narration is a total win. I'm sure the library hates me for all the requests which cost money but I only want these on audio.  The setting is San Antonio with historic figures from the battle at the Alamo as the ghosts.

The original "krewe" is only in The Unseen very briefly.  A new team is being set up to be based in Texas and this is their first case. The likely villains were somewhat clear from the beginning, but I enjoyed this very much.  The romance was rushed but each book does develop a couple.
Narration:
Luke Daniels is the reason I will only do the series in audio format. He handles male and female voices and accents with expert talent.  I am able to listen at 1.5x speed. He is fantastic!

Heather Graham is kicking off a spin-off series to her Krewe of Hunters books, with this romantic-suspense, peppered with paranormal elements. As someone who has never read the original series, I can tell you that this is a great place for new readers to jump in, since a crew of all-new characters are introduced. And I never felt lost at any time.

Jackson Crow is the leader of a paranormal law enforcement group and he is putting together the second team of its kind to help investigate crimes. To lead the Krewe, he chooses Logan Raintree, a Texas Ranger whose wife was killed by a perp three years ago. For an investigative partner, he chooses Kelsey O'Brien, a US Marshal from Florida. Both Logan and Kelsey can see ghosts and communicate with the dead in their own ways, and Jackson hopes they will use their gifts to solve a string of murders that seem to have very little in common.

Over the course of the story, we find that the murders are tied to the history of the Alamo and the mysterious disappearance of an ancient diamond. Somehow, a haunted hotel plays into it all, as well. Logan and Kelsey work together with other members of the new team to figure out what their victims have in common and who killed them.

It doesn't take long before our hero and heroine are inexplicably drawn to one another. And they fall in love while working the case. The romance was just OK. I never really felt gripping emotions from these two and the love scenes felt kind of uninspiring. Let me give you an example:

There was something about her. It began with her eyes, the emerald green that seemed so pure and untainted, even with the world around them so ugly and cruel and torn. She was lithe and beautifully golden with a fading tan; against that, her hair was like fire, a fire of temptation and seduction. She was vital in her passion, eyes flashing, whispers ever more erotic, and she moved with the fluidity of water. She could tease and excite and arouse with a sweep of that lustrous burning hair. Making love with her was like a sea of sensation. All encompassing.

Shower and then bed. Making love in a stream of water, then making love in the softness of a mattress and pillows. Afterward, he lay spent in a way he barely remembered, his mind telling him that sex was just physical heat and desire shared by a man and a woman, and yet somewhere in his soul another voice was telling him there was a difference and he should know it well. The difference between sex and making love.

It just... didn't do it for me. And it wasn't my only problem with the book. There were way too many history lessons wrapped up in the story. I'm not looking to learn the history of the Alamo when I read a romance novel. And yet, I learned as much about it here as I did in my 7th grade American history class. Plus, I figured out who the main killer was about 100 pages before it was revealed. Not cool.

I guess my biggest complaint is that the book didn't inspire much passion in me, either with the mystery or the romance. Overall, the whole thing was just kind of so-so. 3 stars.

The Unseen is the latest book by Heather Graham. I can say this book belongs in some part to the Krewe of Hunters series or at least it runs parallel to that series.

Jackson Crow, the leader of the original Krewe of Hunters is in Texas organizing a second crew, since his original group is already too busy working many cases and they are not enough for all the demand of work they have. They need more people and here is where Texas Rager Logan Raintree and U.S. Marshall Kelsey O’Brien come. Raintree will be the director of this new group and will work with Kelsey and other members that will come along the way.

After that blurb I think adding more than this will be telling the whole book.

There were things I liked about this book and others I wasn’t so sure. Let’s start with what I liked.
I really liked the historical facts and the description of the locations. I have never been in Texas let alone in The Alamo, but after reading this book I feel somehow as if I’ve been there and seen it. I did know about the Alamo, but not with much detail, what I didn’t know about it I learned with this book; I loved history so that was good, maybe if you already know the history of The Alamo all the historical mentions can be too much for you, but for me it was just perfect. Another thing I also liked was the Native American references, especially when the difference between Comanche and Apache beliefs were explained. I’m an admirer of Native American culture, so for me this was a special treat.
Another thing I liked was that the whodunit wasn’t predictable. I had my suspicions but I wasn’t a hundred percent on it. I liked that very much, I liked when an author surprise me a leaves me with an “I didn’t see that one coming”.

Now to what I didn’t like, first, the case in itself felt put together by force. I didn’t feel there was any connection between the murders to think that they were all related. Ok, I don’t know anything about police procedure but that was just my impression. In my opinion the case in general felt a bit farfetched.
Another thing I had a problem with was Logan and Kelsey’s relationship, for sure there was an attraction between them, but I really didn’t feel a deep connection. It felt more as if they were having a fling than really getting into a serious and long lasting relationship.

Despite the things I didn’t liked I can honestly say I enjoyed reading The Unseen. As I said before I loved the historical aspects of the story and I loved the ghost’s factor and the mystery behind the murders. I really want to know more about the other members of this new Krewe of Hunters and I’m planning to read future books in this series.
I recommend you this book if you like mystery books with a paranormal touch and lots of history behind them.

As a lover of the Krewe of Hunters series I was super excited to see this spin-off series featuring a new Krewe of Hunters.
I enjoyed the book it had everything that I love about Heather Graham’s writing. It had the murder mystery, the ghosts, and the psychics and then it had the romance but I usually just think of the romance as being a part of the story that was just there.
While I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story and the ghost part, I feel there was something missing in the character side of things. This is sort of unusual for me to notice as I don’t pay too much attention to the characters usually. However, this is a Heather Graham novel and I find myself interested in her characters more so than others and I feel like we didn’t get to know Kelsey or Logan all that much. I liked what I got from them but I just felt like there was something missing.
It was really good to see a couple of members from the other Krewe of Hunters series, I’m also curious to find out more about the other members of the new team. You do meet some of the others but very barely, they’re a team but the book focuses more on Kelsey and Logan more than anything.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Unseen. It had a twist that was really awesome and while I guessed some of the whodunit I wasn’t completely sure about it until it was confirmed. The book opens up for an awesome new series and whether you’ve read the original Krewe of Hunters series or not this is definitely enjoyable.
