Riley Beckett's past just came back to haunt her . . . and this time, he's got a gun. When Gage Lawton finds his brother shot dead on his back porch, every shred of evidence points to one Gage's former lover, Riley. He and she didn't part ways on good terms, and he's not planning to rekindle anything now--not when he's got a revolver pointed at her head and a finger on the trigger.
A year after Riley swore she and Gage were over, he returns in a hail of gunfire. One look into those achingly familiar blue eyes and she knows how wrong she was to let him go, but now far more than their heated past stands in the way. A twist of fate puts them in the crosshairs of a killer, leaving Riley with two slim trust her greatest betrayer or face a murderer on her own.
Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids). When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or seeking that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her.
She loves creating unforgettable stories while putting her characters through an unkind amount of torture—a hobby that has nothing to do with living with six children. (Really.) Though she adores nail-biting mystery and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Sarah writes in many genres including contemporary and ghostly paranormal romance. Her ever-growing roster of releases may be found on her website.
Don't let that 'Packing Heat' fool you, this so-called 'sensual' RS is as sensual as stale bread (all the loving happened in the past, the bit this book has left out)and flatter than the flattest pancake. No nuance,no sense of story telling, no nothing. And as if the lifeless writing style was not enough, the stale rejoinders disguising as witty banter finished me off.
The writer takes interesting themes (boyfriend killing parents in a car accident, brother paralised, a sister's loyalties tested, etc.) and buldozes over them with her unique knack for trivialising even the most serious of difficulties. Giga-boredom is the true title of this book.
I should also add that the story lacks even the most basic understanding of human behaviour and psychology: you simply don't see your brother's head shot to pieces and in less than 2 hours turn into playful lover boy with your ex. SIMPLY NOT DONE (unless you're clueless beyond belief as a writer, or simply a hero who hated his brother -not the case here). What is bizarre about the whole affair is that the writer boasts about her research into guns (and thanks the guy who had to answer her questions), yet she did not feel she should make the slightest effort into building some convincing story with characters acting, to some degree, believably. She also showed no skill in handling even the simplest elements of story telling (eg, you simply don't have your heroine return -and while a killer is after her and her ex-to her home where a sheriff (and supposed boyfriend) has been shot dead, where the police is still looking for clues, and when an investigation just got off the ground, and that only TWO days after the murders!!! The fact that the clues point to the heroine never bothered this writer (she probably thought we will be so overwhelmed by this stale couple's non-existent passion -stated but never shown- that we'll forget the heroine should have been a person of interest for even the most incompetent police department). At every turn of the page I wanted to scream, in American fashion, 'hello, anybody there?').
As I subjected myself to this terminally dull book, where everything feels and reads wrong, I started feeling sorry for the two MC, they cried out for some skillful writing hand to bring them to life and give them dimensions. They deserved a book that could do angst, pain, suspense, love and sex, and instead they got this toneless mess. My advice to readers of RS (who are not friends and family of the writer and bombard GR with five stars), save yourselves time and money and give this one a wide berth.
This book starts off very vaguely; action soon ensues but there is still an air of vagueness. Reading, I’m frustrated but do still feel a need to keep going. I’m 20% in and still looking for answers to the obvious baggage that both main characters are carrying as well as waiting for other explanations. By 30% I’m enlightened and the tension is building in more ways than one. From here, the action and the heat pick up. I found this novel to be full of clichés and while it was interesting at times, it didn’t give me that can’t-put-it-down feeling. I predicted much of what was to come, but to be fair I tend to predict everything. The book was well written and I would be open to checking out more from this author.
You will be hooked from the prologue. It is such a fast paced book that the next thing you know you are finished. Gage was wanting answers and the only one to give them to him was the one person who he promised to stay away from. Riley lost everyone she loved in one night and was just living a shell of a life. Until a tragic turn of events happen to bring them back together, they both are trying to figure out what to do next. Will they figure out what happens next before getting caught or ending up the next victim? This is a really great book and if you like a little suspense with the romance then this is your next book to read!
Sarah mixes the perfect combination of romance, suspense and drama to keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Plot twists keep you engaged in the murder mystery and intense chemistry between Gage and Riley make for a great read! Excited to see if more comes from this series! One can hope...
I started this book on a Sunday afternoon after I sprained my ankle. I figured the best way to pass the time with a propped up foot on ice was to read, to help take the mind away from the current pain. Let’s just say that halfway thru the book my husband ask me how my foot was feeling. I looked up and almost said what foot. Yes, I became that absorbed in this book.
This book starts out with a murder, someone seeking revenge for a past wrong. Sometimes it is better to leave a past dead and buried but then there are some people that refuse to allow the past to rest. They want revenge for a wrong no matter how slight even if the person is not guilty except in their eyes.
Normally I am able to pick out the villain when reading; whether it was the pain or just such great writing I did not figure out who until it was revealed.
I do have a few problems with the book. Would really love to know more about the accident that killed Riley’s parents and what type of accident put her brother in a long-term assistant living facility. What Colt, Riley’s brother, in the same accident as her parents? The author leaves this up to the readers imagination.
Then we have Gage who just lost a brother. For a person who just lost a close family member he seems very cold and distant. He mentions to others about his brother’s death a few times and then nothing. Does he not have any feelings for his brother? Does he not have any guilt that it was suppose to be him dead and not his brother? Just wondering why Gage is portrayed as someone who does not have any feeling shown except for what he feels for Riley.
I did enjoy this book and I liked how the author glossed over the sex scenes. Romance and sex were not the main focus of the plot, oh they were their but they were not important. The most important thing was solving who was hell bend on murdering people.
Thanks for a fun relaxing read Sarah. The bunnies and I give this book carrots.

How It Made Me Feel: From the prologue to the last page of the book, I was in, hook, line and sinker. I was drawn in with the action, suspense, and the characters and I was not disappointed. The story starts out with an unnamed character staring down the barrel of his gun and it leaves you wondering what is going on. No worries, the explanation isn't far behind. Riley and Gage set off on a fear based run, set on discovering the truth for why Gage's brother was shot. It was a fast paced book and an easy read, but it kept my attention from the beginning to the end. I really enjoyed how the characters were developed and the supporting characters added to the story. There were parts of the book I knew were coming, but I was a bit blindsided towards the end. It kept me guessing and I was able to easily continuing reading. There was an equal mix of action, suspense, romance, and mystery that kept me wanting more.
What I Thought Worked: I greatly enjoyed the supporting character of Maverick, Gage's boss. I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like his character, but it didn't take long for his exasperation and short wit to win me over. Gage did remind me of someone who would cause someone to loose their patience very easily and Maverick handled it amusingly and well.
What I Thought Didn't Work: I almost wish there had been another 10-15 pages for the book. I wanted to hear a little bit more about Colt, Riley's brother, and see how his relationships had changed and why. There wasn't much of a lead up at the beginning of the story, before he was thrust in as a pretty major character.
Why It Got That Rating: Every once in a while, I find a suspense book that starts out great and then begins to drag. It wasn't the case with Forsaken. It was fast paced, easy to follow, and entertaining. I enjoyed reading it and know I will be reading it again as well as recommending it.
Who Would I Recommend To: I would recommend to someone who is looking for a quick read with a touch of romance and suspense.
Last Impressions/Remarks: At 153 pages, Forsaken offers a brief respite from the everyday world, taking a step into dodging bullets, stealing cars, and coming clean about your past. A great read.
(3.5 Stars) Unforgiven starts with a bang and doesn't slow down, from murder to suspecting your ex-love of your life to becoming fugitive things don't come easy to Gage and Riley - but it sure makes for interesting reading! Sarah Balance writes an action packed story where in its center we have an ex-couple, still in love with each other but enough has happened in their past, from his drinking to her parents death that they are more than weary of connecting again.
I liked Gage, I liked how he'd grown to be a man in the year these two spent apart. He's passionate, commanding and skilled ( and has a yummy jealous streak ) and he was a perfect partner to Riley's character. Riley was a joy to read, she's capable, has a good sense of humor, but a really nice vulnerable side as well. :) The characters are well written, wonderfully real and easy to like and care for, their chemistry works well and you believe the passion and the love.
The plot on its own was great! I like my novels with bit of mystery, loads of action, hot couple and all kinds of yummy sexual tension and Unforgiven provided them all! Half way through the book I was all invested in finding out just who pulled the trigger and how was her brother involved, great mystery! When it comes to things I found have wanted more was sometime between the murder and the flare of emotions again, it felt bit too sudden and bothered me in the beginning along with the teasing and jokes, I felt if my brother had just died or if I'd been shot at it would take me some times to recover. But that soon faded as the story moved and the character journey and the plot won over. Great ride, I do love my romantic suspense with a danger threatening the couple's lives, mystery to discover and whole lot of action!
You'll like this if... romantic suspense is your thing, if you aren't squeamish about guns and if you like action in your stories!
The sensual romance category does not do it justice. That’s why I don’t like specifying genres – there are so many people who would enjoy this book but would probably keep away because of the ‘label’.
The plot is complex, but clear. Riley Beckett hasn’t had the best of times since the accident, a year ago, that has destroyed her life. But even on her worst day she doesn’t expect to step into her home and be confronted by a gun. The gun is not the problem; the person holding it is.
There are so many twists and turns in this story, you won’t know what to expect. The action starts on page one and never lets up. Riley and Gage step from disaster to even bigger disaster, and from being hunted by one madman to… oh, I almost said too much. Since we’re talking about characters, let me tell you these two are perfect. Their relationship is that of two hedgehogs who’ve got their spines stuck on ‘up’ and it takes a lot of delving into the past and raking at old wounds to set things right again. And when they’re right, they’re hot!
Secondary characters are also good, have their own voices, stories and personalities. The dialogues – oh, the dialogues! – are so fun to read, so clever and lively and brimming with sexual tension. The descriptions are faultless, the pace is just right, the story flows, and the writing style is no-nonsense. A joy to read.
There’s not much else to say. This book is perfect for anyone who has lost the joy of reading – the perfect ray of sunshine to lead you back. Everyone else will love it anyway. If I could award it more than five stars, I would. Beautiful book, enjoyable to the last page. Highly recommended.
I have read a few books written by this author which I enjoyed as such when provided with the opportunity to read and review Forsaken I immediately ceased it. Forsaken is a story that will pull you in from the very first line. The action is non-stop and keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
It has the right blend of romance, action, drama and suspense that will keep readers engaged to the very end. I was hoping that the story would be more mysterious, but this was not the case. It was easy to figure out who the villain was a quarter way into the story. It was very obvious, but what kept me turning the pages was trying to figure out how the villain was able to carry out his plans for revenge.
The interaction between the primary characters (Gage and Riley) is entertaining and at times amusing. The chemistry between them burns hotter than before the tragic accident that had claimed the lives of Riley’s parents. After the accident Gage and Riley had parted ways after he vowed never to contact her again. Yet, another tragic circumstance would have them re-connected in a manner they never anticipated.
Based on reviews that I read a few persons have a problem with how Gage was able to recover so quickly from his brother’s death. Personally, I don’t believe he did and besides, I don’t believe he would have had the chance to grieve given the fact that he was being chased by a psychotic killer. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to readers who love romantic suspense.

Unforgiven is an entertaining, fast and energetic read. The action starts from the very beginning and doesn’t end until the last page!
Riley is a woman that has made sacrifices during a tragic and emotional time; and while she might not have made the same choice after things calmed down, she stands by them and honors a promise.
Gage is a man with a past, but one he was trying to get past so he could have a future with Riley, until tragedy struck….Now he has lost the only woman he ever loved.
A year after the tragedy struck, Riley is forced to face Gage again and they are stuck together until Gage can clear Riley’s name and find the person responsible for killing his brother.
The characters are likeable and the sparks are ready to ignite a fire between Riley and Gage at every turn…and do! The story is fast paced and entertaining; a great ‘fast’ read. Sometimes with short books you don’t get enough detail and character build, but not so with Unforgiven.
Very well done and I enjoyed this book very much!
Favorite Quote: (After Riley found out that Gage’s job is dangerous and puts his life at risk, she asks him if he’s willing to die for his job. My favorite quote is his response.)
“Riley,” he whispered against her lips. “Until about five minutes ago, I was already gone.”
A year after walking away from Gage, Riley’s past is back to haunt her and this time it’s got a gun in this thrilling romantic suspense.
When Gage Lawson finds his brother shot to death, he’s certain that it is payback for his part in the loss of Riley’s parents. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Gage sets out to confront Riley only to find out that their attraction still burns as hot as ever and that everything may not be as it seems. The characters are strong, compelling and grab the reader’s attention and the plot is fast paced, smooth flowing and full of suspense, action and passion.
There is never a dull moment as the readers are kept on their toes with lots of well orchestrated suspense and action that draws the reader and ensures that they want to know the whole story and spine tingling excitement builds throughout as Riley and Gage have to go on the run while the try to determine just what the heck is going on. The well written scenes and details capture the imagination and the surprising twists keeps the readers wondering “who done it”.
This quick romantic suspense held me captive from the very beginning and not only did the suspense keep me hopping but so did the relationship as there was plenty of conflicting emotions keeping it full of ups and downs.
Unforgiven is a romance filled with passion, suspense, mystery and intrigue. A smooth flowing storyline, that will not only pique your interest but have you hooked till the very end.
A cast of characters Im sure you will enjoy, an edgy suspense with just the right amount of passion, and romance and enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Sarah has written her characters realistic and believable, all gathering there own qualities as the story progresses. A sexy hero, and a heroine with a kick arse stance, and sensual romance between the two that will have your heart fluttering !!
One of the best parts about this suspenseful, romantic thriller is the progression of the drama the story just keeps getting better and better.
The story runs smoothly with enough momentum to keeps the reader’s attention riveted as tensions are heightened and the killer gets desperate.
Once again an ending that is UNPREDICTABLE... by any means !!
Two characters both torn with the past , struggling to survive the future. I wont go into the storyline to much with this review, but a definete must read to add to your pile ;)
Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock 4 Fangs This is a great book. Riley and Gage used to date until a horrible accident killed Riley's parents. Riley's brother Colt wanted her to stop seeing Gage. Colt felt Gage was to blame for his parents death. Gage came home to find his brother shot dead. He went to Riley feeling she was the one who had done it. After going to Riley's they both were shot at. They escaped together but have to work together to find out who is trying to kill them. This is a fast paced book. The story line is not dragged out for weeks. The dialogue the characters have with each other feels real. There is some romance but it's not over done considering they are running for there lives. I would have liked a little more description. It would have been nice if the characters were described a bit more too. It's nice to have a feel for what they look like as you imagine what they are going through. I would recommend this book for any one who likes romance and mystery. I would definitely read another book by Sarah Ballance.
Good read. The plot wasn't so complicated that you couldn't follow it and the cast of characters wasn't so large as to complicate it. Unlike other reviewers, I thought the character interactions and reactions were believable. Also the answers to some of the questions that they have are in the story itself. The details are just not brought to the front and center as I think they are really secondary to the story line. The only thing that made me question the plot line was believability of the events surrounding the accident transporting Colt from the hospital to the care facility. I'm not going to get into details but I got past it easily. We watch movies and suspend our disbelief at certain scenarios...why can't we do that with books?
All in all I have to say Maverick is, in fact, my favorite character, Gage and Riley have great chemistry, and it was a fun/fast paced read.
Unforgiven is a wonderfully written romance/mystery novel by Sarah Ballance. I read it in about one sitting and I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end. Ballance has a wonderful way with words and she does an amazing job of building up the suspense in the novel. She kept me on edge and by the end of the novel I was still genuinely surprised to discover who the killer was. I loved Riley and Gage's characters, they balance each other out and the chemistry between them is definitely hot. I was to see that Riley's character didn't play your average damsel in distress. Although Gage was there to protect her through out the novel, it was obvious that Riley was strong and cunning enough on her own. Overall I highly recommend this book, it was great!
One of the things I loved about this story is the way it begins. It reaches out and grabs your attention quickly and BAM! – you are immediately engaged in the story. Forsaken is a fast paced read with the suspense continuing to build as the story progresses. The chemistry between Gage and Riley is believable and intense. I also liked that it wasn’t easy to figure out who was chasing them and was surprised when the “who” was revealed. All in all, I found Forsaken to be an edgy read that gave me the things I look for in a romantic suspense. I’ve yet to be disappointed by a book written by Ms. Ballance and I think you’ll enjoy it, too.
A lovely fast pace read. Gage and Riley were pretty cool characters. The book addict in me stood up and started to drool from the prologue, and I was hooked. The writing was sharp and beautiful and I enjoyed that immensely. The story in itself was a good one. The plot was very interesting, not predictable, and very fast pace, which I really liked. I wanted to know what was happening and I was pretty invested in Riley and Gage quick journey to the truth. Though a novella, I felt like I got a good feel of Riley and Gage, and their love and past caused a bitter sweet ache inside of me. As usual I wanted more time with Riley and Gage, and that is always a brilliant thing in my estimation.
Sarah Ballance has shot another romantic suspense out of the ball park! I was hooked from the first scene in 'Unforgiven'...a shot echoing through the woods in Oklahoma with a mysterious marksmen out for revenge. From that moment forward, 'Unforgiven' takes many exciting twists and turns that lead to an ending I did not see coming. Brilliant storytelling. Luscious romance. And, as is standard for Sarah Ballance...a headstrong, beautiful heroine and the sexy but real-to-life hero who makes her life both hell and heaven. A must read!
Unforgiven will definitely be an unforgotten book in my library. I loved it. It is packed with heart pounding action that leaves the reader wanting more. Riley and Gage take the reader on a heat filled journey that will leave the reading turning the pages to find out what's going to happen. The plot flows and the characters are flawless. During the entire read, Unforgiven had me guessing at what would happen and I eventually found out Sarah put in a twist I didn't see. I would say this book belongs on everyone's Reading Challenge this.
This one is slightly different from the others that Sarah Ballance has written, but no less engaging. She draws you in immediately in the middle of the action, and you have no choice but to move along with the characters as they go about trying to find out what is happening. As the reader, you go with the flow, finding out information as the characters do, which brings a sort of different feel to the book. There's a good balance of action, intrigue and romance that it has turned into one of the more intriguing ones that I have read in a long time!
This was the first book I have read from this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it to be a quick read with an engaging storyline, likable characters and interesting mystery. Lies, secrets, betrayal, guilt ,anger , remorse and danger are heavy hitters in this second chance love story. As each element comes into the play, you are drawn deeper into the mystery of who wants revenge enough to kill. Will the truth set them free or destroy them in the end? You will have to read the book to find out. ( its worth it).
Juicy tension, secrets from a past together, an accident that drove two lovers apart, a torn family, and someone out to kill the main characters as they sort through their problems, attraction and a promise by one to stay apart, you can't help but be pulled along in this action packed novel.
As you hitch along for a whirlwind ride, you can't help but wonder what's around the corner, and a shocked by a plot twist that you couldn't see coming.
The story starts from the killer's point of view, it reels the reader in because right off the bat you want to know who it is. Gage and Riley's relationship was torn apart one horrible night. When they come face-to-face, a year later, you realize they should have never separated, it's evident they are each other's one and only. Ms Ballance does a great job of keeping the story moving, the sexual tension between the character is great, definitely recommend this book! Entertaining Read.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It has action, suspense and mystery rolled into a romance novel. Riley was an overall good female lead, even with a gun pointed at her. The chemistry between her and Gage is hot, with a bit of anger thrown in. If you are looking for a book that combines romance and suspense, then I highly recommend this book.
This book really has it all. Passion, romance, suspense, murder. The plot had me guessing all the way to the end. Sarah Ballance really knows how to create loveable characters and very detailed worlds. I felt like I was there through all the action. This should be on everyone's "To Read" list.
Really liked this book. I enjoyed the twists this book took, it caught me off guard. I liked how they had knew one another before and it had ended badly, then they had to overcome that, mix that with running for their lives this made for an interesting read.
