Becky Klauer is the author of suspense and cozy mystery novels. The Veronica Pearl Series includes: Manifestation (#1), Revelation (#2), Reflection (#3), and Activation (#4). Her cozy mystery series, The Happy Hookers Club, includes: First Time’s a Yarn (#1), Hooked on a Feeling (#2), and Knot My Circus (#3). Her two standalones (as of now) are No Stone Unturned, and Axx and Axel. She has written and edited for print and online media, other authors, and a TedX talker.

Her novels, whether serious or not so serious, involve good guys and bad guys because she is married to a hot police guy and likes it when the good guys win. Since real life doesn’t always work out that way, writing the endings in her books the way she wants to means they always will.

Her adult children have left the nest, but the wildlife menagerie has not; plus, she has gained a grandson. She has broken her wrist while motorcycling, her knee while snowboarding, and her finger while closing the door. She tries to instill that same sense of adventure in her female lead characters. When she isn’t working out, writing, or reading too many books at once, she is attempting new vegan recipes and new crochet patterns for the many colors of yarn that keep growing. Stop having sales and she'll stop buying yarn.

I wanted to read First Time's a Yarn because like the main character, I crochet. Then being a cozy murder mystery, which I love, I figured I'd enjoy it. Ultimately I give it 3.0 stars.

I got thrown off at the very beginning when the murder is referred to, but then it jumps backwards to explain how Breezy's life got so complicated to the point she was at the crime scene. The opening five chapters then became a large chunk of info dumping. Breezy (FMC) was explaining the situation using "the laws of three," and I think just starting with that concept would have been better than briefly referencing the murder, but not mentioning it again until the end of chapter five.

Once the story got back to the current time, it started to get good. I liked the ghostly element even though it's introduction felt a bit odd. I liked Breezy's interactions with the teens - the whole "I'm not your parents, but I'm responsible for you now" balancing act. And the actual murder and mystery was good.

I liked the Hail Marys, but I expected them to be the "senior sleuths" that they were introduced as and have a hand in helping solve the mystery. The crochet aspect I was interested in didn't really offer much outside of bringing the Hail Marys to the house, but since they weren't used...

While technically that meant I enjoyed the majority of the book, I just couldn't ignore the chunks of info dumping (some of which I felt was unnecessary), the inconsistencies in personalities and reactions (see spoilers below), and the repetitiveness of information and actions.

First Time's a Yarn did have a nice cliffhanger ending that I do expect to continue the series when the time comes. And I'll do so hoping that the issues I had with this one can be written off as "first book in a new series" issues.

* I received an ARC for free in exchange for an honest review.

I really loved the premise of this book. Ghosts, murder, crocheting, secret organizations! What's not to love? I felt like it was a little clunky in the beginning and some of the major plots of the book were just plopped into the text. I liked the story so much though that I powered through. I'm glad I did. The writing became a little smoother towards the middle and I really enjoyed the twists and turns.

Breezy is thrown in to a parenting role when her mom takes off and she has to supervise her teenage sister (Oona), and her sister's friend (Juniper) who are being released from juvie, with the stipulation that they need an adult, a home and a job. Breezy is able to provide all 3 and puts them to work crocheting for her new business. Breezy and the girls are thrown in to an absolute mess when they find a couple bodies at Juniper's boyfriends house. Things kind of spiral from there.

Breezy learns that there is more to her past than she remembered and also learns that she is able to see ghosts. I liked the ghosts. I thought they were fun and added some extra comic relief. I enjoyed Breezy's personality and sense of humor. I also loved the addition of Breezy's niece.

It took me a bit longer to get through this book than I thought it would, but I think that was just due to the slow start. Overall, I am really looking forward to future books.

I really, really loved this book! I loved Breezy and the rest of the characters, they were all amazing! This book was beautifully written and I loved Breezy's sleuthing, it was good enough for an amateur.
🧶🧶
I loved her Happy Hookers' Club which consisted of her niece, Emrys, sister, Oona, sister's friend, Juniper, her best friend, Ammy and the Hail Marys. They made the perfect team for solving crimes and crocheting😂😂
🧶🧶
I loved how the mystery unfolded and I was not even bored at all!
🧶🧶
I loved Breezy's brother and Jax and Breezy's crush on Jax , can't wait to read more about their burgeoning relationship!
🧶🧶
Although there are a lot of things I loved in this book, there were some things I didn't.
1. The unexpected twist that I did not see coming, i'd have preferred it if it was in the description, but it still grew on me
2. I was confused when Breezy had a flashback and I couldn't differentiate it from the present, i'd have loved more than a paragraph for the differentiation
3. The ending, I couldn't understand the punishments doled out.
🧶🧶
Anyway, I can't wait to read the next in series

Sometimes, less is more. I feel that First Time's a Yarn is all over the place. The crochet club is good and I like the Hail Marys. But when Breeze was part of government super secret operation and she apparently can communicate with ghost, I just like "what??". The book focus in so many things from paranormal aspect (ghost), unknown basement that become Breeze's brother, Boone, secret place, dealing with juvies, murders that happen because of some criminal activities related to Russian mob and etc etc. From half of the book to the end I just kind of lost interest. Also the way the case got solved maybe supposed to be funny. But I don't find it funny. Not a little bit.

Story and characters aside, I find the ebook format a little bit jarring because the section placement was weird. I feel like this book need editing because of some info dumping and also proof reading because why Boone's brother in law named George then turn to Oscar in the end of the book? Because there's another character also have George as his name? This seems simple and kinda overlook, but maybe double and triple check the book for any typos before release it? At least I got this free on Kobo, but still.

First Time's a Yarn have potential. But maybe if the book focus in only few things and more like cozy mysteries rather than mix and match of things, I might be enjoy it more.

When I first began this, I wasn't sure where it was going to take me, even after reading the blurb. I certainly did not expect the journey I was to embark on, however!

I will start with the aspects of this story that I enjoyed -- and there were many! I think the one that stands out the most to me was the fun, whimsical tone that envelops every word of every page. I enjoyed Breezy's internal monologue a great deal, so I am very thankful that this was written in the first person, as I think the charm of this story would be lost otherwise. Breezy's outlook on life and how she approaches situations with humor and thoughtfulness alike were all very welcome additions to this novel.

One more thing I'd like to praise is the dialogue. I have read many stories where the dialogue feels forced or very clearly WRITTEN by someone else. These stories usually also have each character sounding practically the same, ruining the illusion that they are attempting to conjure. I can safely say, however, that this book absolutely does NOT have that issue. I LOVED the dialogue -- the author deftly balances humor, action, and narrative in a way that feels unique to each character and their voice. When paired with the wonderful descriptions interspersed throughout this story -- another plus -- it makes for beautifully vivid scenes that left me delighted as a reader.

This, however, leads me to my main criticism of the story -- the balance between "showing" and "telling" in the writing (or, more specifically in this case, "scene" and "summary") is a bit too skewed toward "telling." What I mean by this is that, in my opinion, too much of the story is just "this happened, and then this happened, and then…" and so on. This made the story's momentum drag for me in the first several chapters, and I almost wish it had actually begun closer to the middle of chapter 2, or even chapter 3, because that's around the time that the exposition begins to morph into scenes that I can picture in my head and follow along with. This is somewhat of a problem throughout the middle of the book, but it is most obvious at the beginning and at the end.

Speaking of the ending, I do think it fell flat just a bit for me. I think the author did a great job of bringing in the tension and giving me that "edge of the seat" feeling, but then it just… ends, and we are, once again, "told" the aftermath. I found myself wishing that Breezy had been given more agency as a character in this moment so that she could actually do something actionable in order to save the day, because her role felt minimized due to how everything wrapped up during the climax of the story.

I have some other nitpicks, but they ultimately didn't affect my enjoyment of the story as much as the above points, so I will leave them out.

I will end this review on a positive note, because I did truly enjoy this story quite a bit. I was a big fan of how eclectically eccentric the names were, and I think they made the characters stand out in my mind, which I appreciated. I don't know where the author came across the names, but I am appreciative of them!

Also, Barley the kitten is written perfectly. Absolutely no notes from me there other than a polite request to the author for more scenes with Barley in future books, because I love him with all my heart :)

Breezy Marston is responsible for two young teenagers Oona her sister and friend from juvenile detention. Emma her niece and all of them find the dead bodies of two young men, one being Juniper's ex - boyfriend Samuel called Skunk and his older brother Charlie . Her brother detective Boone Marston and another detective Jax Noble come to the rescue. Her friend Ammyleigh who helps her with her crochet business is there to support her in her time of need. But unfortunately Breezy has Russian bad guys after her. She also has the weird ability to see ghosts. One ghost was Robert Monaghan and the other Mrs. Davenport who had managed the estate over a century. There is a lot of mayhem, fast pace action ,danger and lots of humour to make this book a enjoyable and exciting read. I received this book via booksirans and leave a honest review. I recommend this book to other readers.

I hope the next book comes out soon!! Let me just say that I've been crocheting for over 15 years, and even used to design amigurumi patterns, so any book that centers around crochet is a must read for me. This one did not disappoint!! In addition to a main character who loves her yarn and hooks, there is mystery and a heroine who has some special talents.

I loved her interactions with the teenage girls under her care, and how she really succeeded in caring for them and helping them. Her Hail Mary crochet group is one I would love to be part of. This is the first book in the series and I can't wait for the next one!

I struggled to like the story in the beginning. The characters are plentiful, from the Amateur Sleuth Society, to the Juveniles, friends, ghosts, and police. I had never heard of steganography or burying code into digital files. Being part of a study for generations with handlers through their lives is mind boggling. I kept reading to find out what would happen. If you like cozy mysteries, paranormal, and crocheting, you will enjoy this. It is book 1 in a series. I really look forward to reading the next book in this series, such a great story and concept.

Please note though, it does start a bit slow, stay with it, you won't regret it. The names are quirky, but follow along with Breezy, the main character, for a great ghost related who-done-it.

Great characters, mystery, all surrounded by a collection of fun support characters.

What a surprise!

Based on the cover and the title of "First Time's a Yarn", I was expecting a typical cozy mystery.

Surprise! It very quickly took an unexpected turn which is handled so deftly I was easily able to suspend any disbelief. The characters are incredibly well drawn and each had an interesting story and back story. The plot is filled with suspense. I loved that the main character had a good reason for inserting herself into the police investigation, rather than annoyingly mixing herself up in things for her own purposes. The female characters are all strong, though not all in the same way. I purchased the next book the moment I finished this one and look forward to spending more time with Breezy, at al.

Five stars.

I got hooked by the Happy Hookers!

Sometime back I grew weary of, and stopped reading, cozy mysteries with paranormal premises, so I was surprised when I started reading First Time's a Yarn. How did I download this?? But Becky Player's writing drew me in like a bulky soft yarn and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It definitely left me wanting to read the next one! I am a crocheter, like the protagonist, and I loved the clever chapter headings that connected crochet stitches and terms to what was happening in the plot. I loved Breezy and can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. If you like a good cozy mystery that is a real mystery, unlike some in the genre, and has a fun, smart, and funny protagonist, I recommend this book.

THOUGHTS: I loved this story! I was expecting your standard cozy, but this is so much more. From the main character being part of a secret government experiment earlier in her life that lets her see ghosts, to the digital coding (and learning new words about it!) and the Russian mafia. She starts a business doing crochet and pulls in her best friend, juvie sister (Oona), sister’s friend (Jasmine), and the elderly Mary’s from the local church to help. Her brother is a cop and his partner is a hunk (of course). They find Jasmine’s boyfriend and his brother dead and the fun (not!) begins. There really is a lot going on in this story (loved the hidden basement!) and I can definitely see more books coming for Breezy and her “team”. This one has a satisfying ending with a surprise twist. Yes, it all may be a bit much for some people, but I really did enjoy this. And the crochet pattern at the end is a bonus. Definitely going to try that one.

Happily looking forward to more Hooking.

I like the writing style, development of characters and story. As a contemporary who done it for crafting nerds, this story checks all the boxes. I'm delighted with my new reading obsession. Crochet being my "therapy" of choice, makes this series a win win for me.

I enjoyed this book since I started on it, and wonder whether I could move on to the next book in the series by any chance. The ghosts, who provided terrific support alongside the other normal characters who offered friendship gave me what I needed most despite my deafness - sigh! Good luck on promoting the next book!!

ENG
Breezy lives in her parents' house; she lost her job, and together with her friend Ammyleight, she decides to open an online shop to sell handmade crochet stuff (it’s a technical term for crocheters).
But things happen: she becomes the adult responsible for her sister Oona, since their parents are nowhere to be found, and Juniper, Oona’s friend, when they are out of juvenile.
She also sees ghosts; she was part of a super secret project, and she has been "reactivated" after she found Juniper’s boyfriend and his brother killed.
Furthermore, to help her solve the mystery (who and why these two were killed), there is the Amateur Senior Sleuths Club, represented by the Holy Marys, four octogenarians in her neighborhood.

I liked this book a lot; it was super fun and unexpected.
I think the mixture of crocheters, octogenarians, teenagers, and ghosts (they are funny too) was so out of character for the things they do that I liked it.
I found two things cute: every chapter title is the name of a crochet stitch, and while doing things for the shop, they also try to solve the mystery.

Thank you so much to BookSirens for letting me read this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

ITA

First Time’s a Yarn is the first book in the Happy Hookers Crochet Club series. It was a great book, it had everything I like in a cozy mystery. The main character, Breezy, is very likeable. There are lots of people in her life and I liked them all. She has a BFF and they’ve just started a new business together – making and selling crochet items. Breezy ends up being responsible for her teenage sister, Oona, and Oona’s friend from juvie, Juniper. It sounds like a heavy topic, but the author keeps everything light and fun.

Breezy’s brother, Boone, is a detective and his partner, Jax, has Breezy a bit flustered. There is a murder, which Breezy gets involved in to help Juniper. There is also a supernatural aspect to the book, though it’s just another piece, not the entire story (which I appreciate). Breezy learns she can see and talk to ghosts.

The book is very funny. Breezy tries to help everyone but doesn’t act like she is burdened by it. There is a lot happening throughout the book, there’s never a dull moment. The romance aspect is cute. It’s fun hearing what Breezy is thinking. Plus, there’s lots of crochet talk and the group that gets together to crochet, they are a lot of fun. The book is well written. I look forward to the next in the series.

Two young teenagers, Oona, and her friend Juniper, went to Breezy Marston after juvenile detention. The bodies of two young men—one of them was Juniper's former boyfriend Samuel, also known as Skunk, and his elder brother Charlie—are discovered by Emma, Breezy's niece, and a group of people. Boone Marston, a detective (alsi breezy's brother), and Jax Noble, another detective, come to their assistance. In times of need, her buddy Ammyleigh, who assists her with her crochet company, is there for her. Unfortunately, Russian bad people are hunting for Breezy. She also has an odd capacity to see ghosts. Robert Monaghan was one ghost, and Mrs. Davenport, who had overseen the estate for more than a century, was the other.

I absolutely adored this book! Breezy and the other characters were wonderful; I adored them all. This book was exquisitely written, and I adored Breezy's amateurish detective work. I adored her Happy Hookers' Club, which also included the Hail Marys, her niece Emrys, sister Oona, Juniper, and her sister's friend. They made an excellent duo at both crocheting and solving crimes.

I thoroughly enjoyed how the mystery came to light and never once felt bored!

I can't wait to read more about Breezy and Jax's developing friendship because I adored Breezy's brother, Jax, and their relationship.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC! :)

A great new amateur crime solver.
Breezy Marston is a late 20's single woman looking to start a new crochet items business with her frien Ammy. Her plans didn't include being the gaurdian for her sister who is being released into her custody from juvenile delinquent incarceration. And to top it off she ends up having to go back to get Oona's friend Juniper who has been disowned by her family. When they go to pick up Juniper's things from her boyfriend's they come upon two dead bodies and a couple bad characters. Breezy turns on some defense skills she didn't know she had and then ends up being reactivated into a cancelled government program that found she could converse with people from the other side, ghosts that is. Now she has to figure out what the Russian mob is after, protect her family and friends, and get those crochet projects done. Enough to keep anyone busy but she also has to understand this ghost thing and solve the basement dilemma. A well written book with many story lines and lots of action and engaging characters.

Kinda chatty, runs on a bit. Some of theghosts are developed in interesting ways, others are bland. Breezy has to assume responsibility for not only her younger sister, but her sister's friend when she got a court letter advising of a date! She also has just lost her job and is setting herself up in a new business venture, crocheting items for sale, and will be using to help the teens. This also brings in a group of church ladies called the Hail Marys who also love to investigate mysteries and so the Hail Marys and the Happy Hookers are off and running! The story does drag in parts and there is some sibling rivalry that does get a bit annoying but when the Russian mafia gets involved, things get hopping! Quite a read!

I knew I was going to like this book, when I saw that Breezy named her crochet business, Happy Hookers. But, I really enjoyed this book, and truth be told, I didn't see a lot of those plot twists coming. I enjoyed the world building and loved Breezy's spectral sleuthing partners, who were incredibly interesting and well developed.

I really enjoyed the church crochet group, I have a soft spot for silver sleuths. But, I also really enjoyed Breezy's interactions with her sister and her sister's friend from Juvie, which was just heartwarming, while also being heartbreaking.

I can't wait until the next book.

First Time's a Yarn is book #1 in the Happy Hookers Crochet Club Mystery series by Becky Klauer.

Breezy Marston lost her job and her best friend, Ammyleigh, suggested they start a crochet business. Then her sister is released early from the juvenile justice system and Breezy picks her and also finds she is responsible for her sister’s friend from juvie too. Then they find dead bodies.

I thought this had a bit of a rough start but I’m glad I stuck with it. The pace does pick up and there is a lot going on with the new business, the girls, and the ability to see ghosts. As an avid crocheted, I like the business. I look forward to book #2.

Total Read Time - 8hrs 0mins

Stars - 5

This is my first, what I would consider a cozy novel. They type you can read curled up in your PJs drinking hot chocolate. That's not to say that the mystery of it isn't gripping because it very much is, I couldn't put it down. Though it is a little on the crime/death/ghost side of things I would let my tween read it.

Please don't let that fool you though it's not a kid's book just a cozy version of a thriller. It has an amazing snowball effect too. The things start happening and they just keep happening. The ending too oh my .... I never saw that coming but absolutely loved it.

Never judge a book by its idea for sure lol not what I expected.... it was better.

I had a hard time getting into this book to begin with, I just wasn't sure I liked the way it was written. After about 4-5 chapters, it really fell into place and I enjoyed the rest of the book. I will definitely read the next book, hopefully. I would recommend this book to others, however, I'd definitely tell them to read to at least Chapter 6 to give it a chance. I gave the book 3 stars because I never give 5 stars as I believe 5 stars mean perfect and I have never read a perfect book. I discounted another star as I said above, I wasn't crazy about the beginning of the book. Hopefully next book will be 4 stars!
