A Straight Path Through the Platform Jungle

Are you a new writer with a manuscript, finished or in development, and are overwhelmed with the thought of marketing your work? Have you heard “You need to have a platform” over and over again and wonder why, or where to start? As a debut author, even working with a publisher, I am challenged with these same questions.

With Every Step Counts, authors Chase Neely and David Loy, of Leverage Brands, clear a straight path through the jungle of platform building to help you succeed as an author. And they do so in an entertaining, easy to read fashion. They help you answer the why, who, where, how, and when of building an audience for your work. Why do you want to write, what is your purpose? Who are you writing for and trying to reach with your message? Where do you find them? How do you approach them, and what steps do you take in what order to reach your goals?

This book is filled with valuable insights gleaned from Chase’s and David’s own struggles and successes in working with creative professionals. Through experimentation and iteration they share stories and examples of what works and what does not. They do not provide quick and easy answers but if you persevere in following their path you will set yourself up for the best chance of achieving your goals.

I am grateful for the course they have charted. Like a trail map on a new hike, it lays out the path to take and tells me what to expect along the way. Like discovering trail signs during the journey, It provides encouragement when I am on the right path and warns me when I am about to head off direction. This book will continue to be an invaluable resource as I progress toward the goal of an expanding readership for my work.

I found this book very useful practically. As an author, in the process of completing his first manuscript, the book opened up a whole new realm of reality that I didn't know existed. The book explained that even if you are successful in acquiring a publisher, the reality is that marketing your book will be principally your responsibility, not the publisher's responsibility. Shock! Re-adjust paradigm of writing reality...

The book explains the crucial importance of developing your brand as an author-business. It also explains the importance of building an author platform, from which your book can be noticed by potential buyers. It then provides a book marketing timeline to keep you on track in offering your book to your target audience.

I have read the book twice, and set up my basic checklists on Excel for all the things I need to do as a new author. I plan to read the book a third time to add detail to the checklists and consolidate my understanding of the tasks from various parts of the book. This book is probably not going to make me rich overnight, but I believe it will set me on the path for success in reaching my maximum number of readers over the long term of my career as a writer. I recommend the book to all authors who didn't know that they are responsible for marketing their book in the current era of publishing.

This is a required textbook for my Creative Writing class at CCU, but it was very nicely written, and the authors provided personality to each segment. It discusses needed skills for new authors, such as: building an author's platform, starting a website, planning a book launch, and drafting a marketing campaign. I found it to have some helpful insights that I plan to use along the way toward my own career.
