A truly fascinating book. Much of our modern life - even the hypernarcissism of celebrity - can be traced back to the Victorian times.

As this is a collection of critical essays by many different authors, it's tricky to rate and review as a whole. The interest in it lies mainly in how attitudes to Victorian authors has changed over the second half of the 20th century. I do wonder, though, why some of these critics bother writing about authors they obviously despise.
