Jane's world is a lot of fun. (I'm glad I don't live in it, though!) It's a lesbian-themed graphic novel, and really funny, to boot. Sometimes the plot relys on eye-rolling twists to get Jane out of a jam (up to and including alien abduction), but it's really enjoyable. Support queer artists!

I bought this mostly to support queer art, and to support a small queer bookstore in Hillcrest, but I ended up liking the characters and the stories in the comic. It's no Hothead Paisan....but I loved the vegan amazons, it's a fun read.

I can't believe I never knew about this comic strip before and I can't wait to find the next volumes. Funny, sharp wit, and humorous real life commentary that is on point, with a mix of fantasy, day dream scenarios that keep it from being just an everyday life comic strip. I love the facial expressions of the characters, especially Jane. I may even re-read it to catch the things I'm sure I missed the first time through...and I almost never re-read.

Just a couple of quick notes:
1) This is a collection that has the first three volumes previously released in the series - I had previously read and liked the first of these volumes.
2) Normally I would have likely read this all in one day but for the part where I had a physical copy of the book - and my eyes aren't the best for that type of reading any longer. So that's why I took most of February to read this book.
3) Jane continues on her weird and wacky journal down lives roads; that one novel I read in the series plus the first volume somewhat mislead me - I kind of had the impression that Jane either got into and out of relationships a lot; and/or she had some kind of on again off again thing going on with Dorothy, when really she spent most of the book on the edge of relationships. Wanting to ask that woman out; being friends, but not dating, that second woman; having various ex-girlfriends turn up, etc. etc. Oh, and that guy from Pearls Before Swine popped up as a reoccurring character (Jane decides to become a cartoonist, a friend new Stephan (whose name, for some reason, was 'Steven' in the book; the guy looked like Pastis and 'Pearls Before Swine', his comic series was mentioned so not sure what is up with using 'Steven').
4) Some family members, namely a sister and niece pop up.
5) This series has so many characters that some will pop up and I'll just barely remember that I'm supposed to know them; while others wander in and out of the story-line and when they aren't in it, I forget they exist.
6) This is a mix of people in here, femmes, butches, heterosexual men and women, bisexual women, lesbian women, and I believe one gay man (and one drag queen (though that was one brief scene)). Oh, and at least one of the very butch looking women are very much straight, so you can't go by looks (of course).
7) Funny book. Makes me want to go reread that one novel set in this universe. Though I'll probably read volume 4 of the comic first, since I already own it.

Jane's World is a comic chronicling the foibles of Jane and her friends. You definitely see Charles Schulz's influence here (Paige Braddock is the Creative Director for the Charles Schulz industry). Jane is like Charley Brown. She's the butt of many jokes, people blame her for screwing things up all the time, and she even says "Good grief!" once. Maybe there will be a little red-haired girl for her in the future? I saw Paige Braddock speak at the Alternative Press Expo a few years ago and she said she wanted to create a comic her mother could read. So I kind of like that Jane's World stays at the PG-13 level. It's good clean fun.

The book is a collection of strips so the gags often occur in four panels and there are plenty of jokes about breasts, farcical weekend camping trips, off-the-wall storylines, and lesbian love quadrangles that made me laugh out loud. Though Braddock uses some jokes I've heard before, she does it in a way that's cute, and through the eyes of Jane, still funny. I can relate to Jane too. I need a cup of caffeine in my hand in the morning before I can say anything coherent, I can count on my circle of friends, I kind of have a hetero best bud like Ethan, and despite my dorkiness, the ladies throw themselves at me too. Snicker.

It has been a while since I've read a collection of comic strips and I found it fun and enjoyable. I like too Braddock's art, the quick sketches of people and their expressions. I got to see the cartoonist speak on a panel at Comic Con and was super psyched to buy the volume. Wee for comics!

There's a little bit of magical realism in this graphic novel that follows Jane and her friends as she tries to make her way through life and love. At first I couldn't get into the book but as I read I started to like Jane and her friends and was pretty amused.
