The internet is like crack. It’s an addictive playground for humans, where people can pretend to be whomever they choose. Men pretend to be women, kids pretend to be adults, bloggers pretend to be experts, and lying goes unchecked.
When suburban housewife Paige learns that her abusive and alcoholic husband, Jim, is frequenting online hook up sites, she sets out on a quest to reveal the extent of his deceit. Hacking and spyware reveal seedy internet sex sites, scandalous messages, and a five year old mystery. When Paige encounters Jessie, a misfit with a grudge, her plan to deceive Jim with a fake identity escalates and takes a murderous turn.
Paige becomes entangled in paranoia and her internet alter ego. When she discovers that Jim's secrets are more monstrous than she imagined, she struggles to avoid a psychological meltdown and must twist her plan in order to solve the mystery, save her children and regain her sanity.
Succumbing to inequity, Paige fights to prevent methodically changing into the same devious monster that she set out to destroy--but will she prevail?
This is a difficult review for me to write because I have so many mixed thoughts about this book. While the premise was great and different there were other issues that prevented me from giving it more than 3 Goodreads stars. First are the spelling and grammatical errors. Sadly, there were a lot of them. There were also a few times where the wrong word was used (ie: lye instead of lie)and the wrong name was used (ie: Jessie instead of Paige. There seemed to be a lot of repetition and bouncing around from idea to idea. I had a slow start to the first 80 pages or so and felt at times that I was reading an article from a magazine or text book with a bit thrown in about the actual story line. After getting past the 100 page mark, the story really started to pick up. There are a lot of emotions going on throughout. Paige really comes out of her comfort zone to get to the bottom of what Jim, her lying, cheating, boozing husband, is really doing. Jim is a real well, lets just say piece of work so I can keep this clean. I wanted to reach into my Nook and smack the crap out of him. He's an arrogant, wanna be jerk. Paige soon realizes their whole marriage has been a charade and things are worse than she could of ever imagined. I really enjoyed the ending and that Paige was able to get her justification. The real issues at hand are real and happen all of the time and Paige makes some bold and daring moves to save not only herself but also her three children. I think with some good editing this book could be a four if not five star read. Being aware of the issues at hand, I would still recommend this book because it is still a great story and has some great characters!
11/7/11 UPDATE TO REVIEW!!! After reading my review, the author made a ton of changes to this book! She has gone back through the first 100 pages, removed some stuff, tightened it up, and fix the grammatical errors. After re-reading this story, I am HAPPY to say that I have changed my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars!! The whole story also flows so much better. The second half is still my favorite part of the book, as the story really starts gearing up for the climax at the end. Paige's emotions and turmoil become very real, as what she endures could happen to anyone at anytime. Head on over to one of the purchase links and pick up your copy, I think you will really enjoy it!!
Paige is a depressed, paranoid housewife with an obnoxious, abusive husband. Then her life gets worse. A promising plot sadly let down by a tortured, over the top writing style littered with grammatical and spelling errors.
