Holy shit. You guys are not ready for this.
This review is brought to you by Kleenex.
I’ll set the mood a little before I go into the specifics of my review. I was a sobbing mess by the end of the prologue. And IT.NEVER.STOPPED. My best friend during the hours in which I read this book were tissues. Lots and lots of tissues.
Stefanie is hands down my favourite author of all time. The “I Never” series lives in my heart and soul. I probably couldn’t even explain in words just how much I love those books. So it’s safe to say, when I learned 7 months ago that she had another book coming out, I was excited. But that excitement quickly morphed to “fearcitement” which you guessed it, is a mix of fear and excitement. Heck, I’ve coined the term just for her. Anyway, once she started Austin Powers laughing all over Instagram and Facebook about how much we were going to cry with this one, I was scared. So f*%king scared.
Scars is truly in my opinion a story about forgiveness, love, friendship and grief. And you don’t experience those emotions in parts, it’s all there, all the time. This isn’t a story where you deal with the sadness and then it gets happy…the sadness lingers. You just learn to accept it along with the characters. I wish I could say this is about Cooper and Riley, but it isn’t. This is as much Tanner’s story as it is theirs.
Cooper, Riley and Tanner will destroy you, make you laugh, give you a headache from crying, but also make you smile with your heart super full. There wasn’t a single aspect of this book I didn’t love. The characters - main or not, the plot, the writing, the emotions, all of it was a 10 star read for me.
P.S.
Listen, I cried a lot. Like A LOT. I was actually crying when I started writing this review. There are some characters like people, Emmett (iykyk) for me; that you’ll never forget. Like ever. And after this book, I’ve added Tanner to that list. Ironic that both those characters for me come from the same author, but I must be a sadist because the second she mentions she’s releasing something, I’m starting a countdown lol Stefanie, once again, you’ve ruined me in the best way possible.
“This one that has her undivided attention, though, is the one on my chest over my heart—a baseball surrounded by angel wings and the number twelve written in the ball’s stitching.”
“I know that sounds dumb, but for that moment, listening to his voice message, I could pretend that he was still alive and would call me back.”
“F$&k, I miss my best friend”
PPS. Go find your best friends, and love them as hard as you can. Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
