Rating 3.5 I wasn't sure I would enjoy this book when I started it for quite some time because we had a lot of angst and animosity in the beginning and pure iciness from the hero and the heroine was engaged to marry and love with another guy but well at the end of it, it worked.
Sergeant Julia Cruze was madly in love and engaged to marry Sloan two years ago when he suddenly told her it was a lie and disappeared, leaving her broken and begging for him to come back but she has changed become harder and self-protecting and has moved on an engaged to marry another man when she is called to his company for a murder and is shocked to find he is back in the city.
Julia is tough with him, doubly so to show that he doesn't affect her and she believes that he is guilty but despite the hate she feels for him somewhere inside she doesn't believe he is guilty despite the fact that she keeps accusing him. She soon finds out why he left her and she gets angrier that he took away her choice, devastating her.
Most of the book Sloan tries to convince himself he made the right decision, so what if he still loves her and has never even attempted to move on, she is better off without him in his life.
It was quite different reading a book where a hero hasn't moved on and a heroine totally has, but despite the hate that comes off Julia, there is deep love and hurt hiding beneath it and at the end that hero acknowledges he made a mistake leaving her.
This book is related toPrime Suspect since it is the same Homicide Division and the next book is about the fiancee she broke up with.
