Rational: The fiction text, Nugget & Fang is a story about a shark and a fish that are friends. The students enjoy reading the story, however realize that there are many situations that would not happen in real life. After reading the story Nugget & Fang, the students can compare fiction and non-fiction stories about sharks. It is important for students to be able to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction books, these two stories provide clear examples of each.
Text Structure: The structure of the non-fiction text, Sharks, is established sequence and question and answer. The author engages the reader with graphics and inserts of information on each type of shark. The author creates interest by providing interesting questions and answers throughout each section of the book. Strategy Application: Compare and Contrast fiction/non-fiction text features. After reading both stories about sharks, students will have a clear idea of fiction and non-fiction features. As a class, the students will discuss elements that made Nugget & Fang a fiction story using information learned fron the non-fiction book, Sharks. The students will independently use a Venn Diagram do compare and contract features of a shark from both books.
The books speaks to two of most students favorite things: vibrant pictures and rhymes. This book tells the story of many of the most notable sharks, although there are over 300 species of sharks. My tutee really enjoyed when I read this to him out loud so that the syllables and sounds could rhyme and make sense in his head. Helping students to promote active listening and a vivid imagination is a goal of any teacher.
I had this book in my home library for my nephew. I read it to him quite a bit. It has real-life pictures of the different kinds of sharks and gives details about them. It's a level 2 book which is for beginning readers so the child can read it to the adult or another child. It provides simple words and easy sentences that describe these amazing fish!
This book is a great rescource for children to use for research. This book has great information about sharks. It also has a dictionary, keywords, and quizes with some amazing pictures.
