I knew Drew Struzan's name for some of his art like the Star Wars and Indiana Jones posters. But this book showed me that dozens of movie posters, book and game covers, even commemorative plates that I recognize were done by his hand as well. Things I never would have connected to him are included here, and you can see his iconic style in everything included. It's astonishing how well he communicates stories, themes and characters in his art - I could name immediately a large number of the movies and books the paintings were used on, even without any identifying information near them (that's a strange design choice - all of them are indexed in the back, but there's nothing near or next to any of the images themselves to tell you what they're from). Some of the works are new to me, especially his private work, most of which this is its first publication.
The book text is weaker than the art; it is illustrative on a couple of pieces, but for the most part I found myself wanting more explanation of his process, and the examples given are fairly random in their selection. Basically, this is a book you have for the art exclusively. And the art is of course gorgeous; well reproduced and given all the space it deserves (I especially like the fold-outs for the related movie series posters).

I have known of Drew Struzan's work for some time and I have had my eye on this book for almost as long. However it was not till I picked up the book did I really LITTLE I really knew. The sheer range and quantity of his commercial work is staggering (by his own admission his private work he has little or no record of and no way of tracking and locating so it is pretty much lost to the world).

There is surprisingly little text in this book - the art literally speaks for itself covering such topics as music, film and book (and a few other projects thrown in as well).

What I cannot get over is that the majority of pieces are full page high quality prints of the originals - which make many of the film posters absolutely jump off the page. Its a beautiful book on high quality paper making it a delight to read (if a monster to hold). Highly recommended.

This book is a sheer indulgence for anyone who loves illustrative style art. And anyone who comes to this particularly for the movie poster art of Drew Struzan, is in for a treat of so much more. Struzan may be to movie poster what John Williams is to movie music, but as with Williams, there’s so much more to his work than that.

The quality of the reproductions of his work, through music and movies, to commercial and personal work, is excellent (and owning a couple of original posters featuring Struzan’s art, a Star Wars: A New Hope style D and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (not the best Indy film, but arguably one of the best posters), it was nice to see the original art in these pages.

The text intros to each section gave a nice little bit of background (anyone who wants to know more in more detail I’d highly recommend the documentary about him that was, last I checked, on Prime in the UK).

My only complaint? Well it’s not enough to dock a star, but I’d have liked the works in chronological order, and the list at the back to have had the dates noted. But hats frankly a minor quibble.

A tremendous collection of Drew Struzan artwork. All of his iconic images are presented within, along with some surprises. For one thing, I never realized that he did the artwork for some of the album covers of Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper! There's also pieces that were done for collector plates (Three Stooges! etc.) The back of the book was interesting as it contained his personal artwork, though I found some of the nudes to be somewhat disappointing. Overall, an amazing and inspiring collection of pieces!

Drew Struzan is my favorite artist. Sure, I discovered him through Star Wars, Indiana Jones Harry Potter, et al. (in the same fashion I discovered John Williams)but, he is so much more than that. He has a great story and a great philosophy on art and beauty. Apart from featuring a large collection of Drew's beautiful paintings, the writing in this book by Drew and his wife Dylan is great.
