Michael Evanichko began to write at a very young age. Inspired by the early works of Stephen King and the schlocky horror and suspense books of the eighties, he attempted his first novel at age twelve. It wasn't until much later in life that he actually completed his first novel, Life in a Supermarket Basket. Life in a Savage Landfill, and Life in a Neon Knapsack soon followed, and his "Trilogy of Life" was completed. Each novel is connected by a character and is unique in its tone and story. Terrific, Fantastic, Amazing, and Compelling are actual words used to describe Michael's books and he didn't pay anyone for those reviews! He is extremely grateful for the love and support received over the years.

This story is funny, quirky and endearing. I loved it. It’s a story of the life of a Vincent. We begin with him at the supermarket buying 14 items in a 10 or less check-out. He feels so guilty that as he is leaving he is not paying attention and is hit by a speeding car in the parking lot then run over by a police car in hot pursuit. How can he survive that? He has an out of body experience seeing all the items in his cart. They each remind him of a memory in his life. It is so creatively done. And the life story is funny and relatable in a lot of ways. I liked the chapter on brownies. The ending was a surprise. Especially about who was driving the car that hit him. I recommend this book for a fun read,

Oh my stars this book is hilarious!! I listened to the audiobook on audible, which the author narrated himself. Every chapter had me laughing out loud and was so entertaining.

Poor Vincent finds himself in the express lane of the grocery store with more than 10 items in his basket. After much anxiety over the ordeal, he makes a beeline out of the store as quickly as possible - only to be struck by a car that was fleeing a police car. His consciousness is hovering over his mangled body as the grocery items begin to circle around him, each bringing back a core memory of his life.

Each chapter is titled after one of the items and the story gives us glimpses of Vincent's life from childhood to present. The chapters of his childhood reminded me of the Wonder Years or Malcom in the middle. Vincent had a large family and the dynamic with his siblings was very much like Home Alone's Kevin and his dynamic with is siblings and cousins. As an adult, his life is utterly mundane but filled with very unlucky situations that had me laughing out loud.

I highy recommend this book, especially the audiobook.

In your final moments when your life flashes before your eyes will it be full of cringy things you wish you could change, moments you couldn't appreciate at the time but now see the truth in, and you realizing at least once you could be called a stud muffin and that's something right.

In Life in a Supermarket Basket, Vincent thought it would be a normal day where he got some groceries and went home to his semi bland life. Instead, thanks to a reckless driver, him and his "Guardian Angel" have to review some of Vincents "important moments in life". The Guardian angel also has an alternative motive that Vincent needs to figure out on his own.

This book is written like a memoir of the main characters life and the reader gets to hear his highs and his oh so awkward moments of life. Did Vincent live a prosperous life, a life full of shame, or just a life that still had a potential. I found this book to be relaxing and quirky and a great book to use as an audiobook when you're just working or driving and what to hear something new but not intense.

satisfying expose of internal self

Quirky, compelling, well-written book. Unusual format; each chapter fleshing out growth of central character. Easily relatable situations combining to provide full story. Humor, pathos abound. Leaves reader with desire to experience the mundane and the wild rides encountered…and the consideration of whether the processes described could actually happen. Very satisfying read.

I listened to the audiobook version of this story, narrated by the author.

Michael did a wonderful job telling the story of Vincent, a man that is forced through his life's memories based on the grocery items in his supermarket basket.

This book kept me engaged the entire time. It was funny and relatable. I often found myself thinking back to my own embarrassing memories and laughing after listening to a chapter.

I will definitely be checking out the other books by this author!

Interesting "life flashing before your eyes" approach.

I really enjoyed this book. It was different from what I normally read.
The main character, Vincent, is hit by a car and run over by another. His life flashed before his eyes as he clung to life. The items in his basket tell his life's story.

I loved this book!! The concept is very clever and kept my attention the whole way through. I thoroughly enjoyed how you kept jumping back and forth to different times in Vincent's life. I also found that I enjoyed the spiritual aspect of the book, even though I am not, myself, a spiritual person. I related to this book on so many levels and I am so sad that I have finished it. What a great debut from Michael Evanichko! Do yourself a favor and purchase it ASAP!

This is a highly unusual story told from the viewpoint of poor Vincent, who made it through the express self checkout at his favorite grocery store despite having much more than 10 items and getting sour looks from those behind him, when karma took care of his misdemeanor in the shape of a car that hit him in the parking lot.

Vincent finds himself floating above his bloated body, lying in a pool of blood, with his groceries scattered around him. People are gathering, sirens are sounding, and somebody is doing CPR on that poor creature laying there. He is rather glad not to be inside that body as he realizes there would be a ton of pain involved.

And, if that's not enough, he suddenly sees a face he remembers from his rather indescribable childhood, and a face he'd rather not remember. Thus begins the story of Vincent, who sees his life flash before his eyes in a rather unusual manner. Memories are triggered, one after the other in turn, by the very groceries he just purchased.

Sounds weird, right? I mean, I hope that when I go, there's that beautiful light and loved ones gone before me, rather than a block of cheese or a Chapstick hitting me and then showing me everything I did wrong. However, considering how much pasta I've consumed, it would more likely be a box of mezzi rigatoni than a Chapstick anyway.

LIFE IN A SUPERMARKET BASKET is one of the books in author Michael Evanichko's "Trilogy of Life" series.

It's a quirky little book about a man named Vincent, who, after a tragic mishap in a grocery store parking lot, is treated to a slideshow of his life, prompted by the items he purchased in his shopping basket. Such a great premise!

Throughout the novel, we see Vincent in all his vulnerable glory, from being invited to listen to his interior stream-of-consciousness thoughts, mistakes, regrets, etc. The embarrassing memories are cringe-worthy but oh-so hilarious! But funny aside, some moments hit you right in the feels.

It's a relatable story that will stick with me for a long time.

I have read Life in a Neon Knapsack, and I look forward to reading Life in a Savage Landfill to complete the trilogy.

Five big stars.

A quick free read for Kindle from Amazon. The plot is very clever. A man is hit by a car in a grocery parking lot and the items he bought--now thrown all over the parking lot--all trigger memories of his life as medical personnel try to save his life. At the start the memories recollected were more embarrassing and cringey than warm and heartfelt. Then at the end, the opposite was true, it was too sweet. The bonus chapter brought it back to 3 stars.

Having grown up in a Pittsburgh suburb I was familiar with the "Big Beaver" location. I remember there being a women's college there, and it's still there but it changed its name to Arcadia University.

This book was recommended in one of my book clubs. It was a delight to read. The writing was brilliantly humorous…i laughed so hard i was crying from a few of the chapters. Even though this guy had a tough go at life it was up lifting to see how life makes you see things you sometimes ignore. I must read the other books in this series now.
