Got through the first book, barely. The story is compelling but the writing is so poor, I began to wonder if it was written by AI. So I looked up the author to see if he was a real human. Can't find a single bit of evidence that someone named John Walker as a sci-fi author exists. Then I see that he's written an average of about 10 books per year since he first came on the scene in 2018. Maybe sometime I'll be interested in reading books by AI, but they will need to be way better than this!
This was a great series. The characters were very well written and developed. The story was very interesting. Several story arcs. There are many sad moments in the final book, but it is to be expected with a war story. The ending is very satisfying. You get the impression from the reading and the outcome from several story arcs that the universe was seeded by some super advanced race. Even though there are several different races in the series, they all seem to be compatible. There are several interspecies relationships, and they seem to be completely compatible. This topic of there being a progenitor race was also brought up in Star Trek. This possibility makes sense, when you factor in that the same species would develop differently on different planets with different biospheres. Just like the difference between animals that are basically the same but with differences based on climate. This was an incredibly fun read. I enjoyed it very much. There were a few instances where the females made some very stupid decisions, but it was for the plot and mostly worked out favorably. I highly recommend this series.
I’m not sure whether to blame the author’s background or the editor. Since there isn’t anything in the author’s bio on Amazon, I wonder. The incorrect word choices and usages about drove me crazy. I had to stop and mentally edit sections, sometimes several times per page. The issues didn’t seem to match likely issues from a non-native English speaker. More like some who received a word-of-day calendar and was intent on using those words, but not really understanding them. Though I was completely surprised when the author correctly used ‘hubris’. But then he used the word again, but only marginally correct the second time. Overall, the story was enough to keep me engaged, though it probably took me 20 percent longer to read due to the mental edits necessary. The incorrect usages did tend to be consistent throughout, but lord help anyone trying to improve their understanding of the English language by reading this set.
John Walker is one of my favorite authors. The independent stories and unique characters keeps you wanting more. I found a lot of parallels to real life including human nature, politics, bravery, sacrifice, fear, and relationships, both good and bad. I enjoyed the archeological component, and also imaginative technology advancements. My only criticism is the all to-often grammatical errors. I often found myself attempting to "fix" some sentences until they made sense. Some words were missing or incorrectly substituted, likely by a faulty AI grammatical system as much as human error. It seems a common problem with many otherwise terrific series I've read, and it would help the enjoyment of the storyline if more attention were given to proof reading before rushing each book to publication.
From the beginning to the very, this was a real ride the Earth colonies had come under attack the new Battle ship "Titan " was close to respond the the distress call. What the crew discovered what (We ain't alone!!!) Aliens where attacking the outpost! The guess what more showed up. The battles never stop, the intensity never slacks off. New allies with better technology, New shields, better weaponry. To fight an enemy bent on Genocide & Glory to the entire Galaxy.
A long detailed rebellion against the dangerous Karl forces
An exploration on a distant unknown planet leads to Earth forces realising other dange rous alien forces exist. Earth joins a new race the Prytins who improve the battleship Trident shields and weapons. A race to discover why the Kahl fight every other race and build up Earth forces leads to many exciting discoveries and battles.
While the storyline held together with plenty of action scenes I had a hard time with all the editing errors. They were a lot in all variations causing me to reread some sections numerous times to understand what the author wanted to get across.
Great series!!! I'm sure I'll read more of his. What surprised me was the fact that I didn't need to scan ( until near the end when I was just anxious to see all the happy endings).
I read the series from the beginning and I have to say that the ending couldn’t have been better. Bunch of girls got their guys and spoiler; the bad guys got either ended or redeemed. I highly recommend reading this.
I enjoyed the story enough to finish all the books . The editor drop words and used wrong ones. Its so frustrating to be in a flow and have to stop and figure out what was meant.
These multi book stories are too long and full of minutia, 2500 pages of firefights broken up with occasional political intrigue. Would be much better as a concise 300 page novel
Still reading it (finishing book 6 right now) but so far I think books 5 and 6 are quite bad, they appear to be unnecesary long and somewhat far from the main story. Also there are many people in these books, narrative switches too often and among too many people for my liking. In fact, sometimes I need a moment to remember the character in which action is centered at a given moment. I believe books would benefit if such changes of POV were somehow put together as side tracks without so much context switching. Otherwise as usual at the end of book 6 I have found lots of military fiction but still I am looking for the science fiction part. So far my rating would be a neutral 3 but it could be perfectly possible that when I reach the end of the series it would be reduced to 2.
