“My beautiful little angel.” Those words cemented the day my world changed. I was painted in shades of brutality and sketched into an impeccable design of what he wanted. Reborn in pain and doused in cruelty, I returned to my hometown after two years—the place that had me running. But everything had changed, I had changed. Thrust back into a world of money, status and secret societies with danger lurking around every corner, I tried to navigate my studies at the prestigious Coldharbour University. Once upon a time, they were my best friends—Hollis, Texas and Preston. They’re no longer boys I grew up with. Now, they regard me with contempt, and make no show to hide it. Survival became all I know, I’ll do whatever it takes to grasp a sliver of normality. Even if it meant separating my realities. Hollis, Texas and Preston had their secrets, as did I. Until the beginning of mine started to unravel, sweeping us all in its destruction and annihilating the relationship we’d rebuilt between us. Not everything was what it seemed. They fed into the lies and lived by their version of it, but when the truth emerged, they finally understood that betrayal lurked closer than they’d imagined. East Bay was riddled with an undercurrent of evil. And they were about to realise just how deeply it ran. I belonged to them heart, body and soul. But my heart also beats for someone else. And the thing about secrets… they always come to light.
This is a why choose romance where the main female character ends up with more than one man. This book is classed as a dark romance for a reason. Suitable for only those 18+. It contains scenes which readers may find uncomfortable & triggering. Please heed author note at beginning of book.
This was not for me. I’m exhausted from reading it and don’t even want to go through all that was poorly executed and poorly plotted. The author is from the UK but this book takes place in California yet there were so many British words used that it made it jarring to read. Why not just set the damn book in the UK?!? The sentence structure was odd. It wasn’t natural and the flow was off because of it.
And seriously that ending was atrocious. They’re not in a good place when the book ends and then all of a sudden they’re all happy in the epilogue?!? Say what??? This whole book had really lazy writing. We were given so few details and so few scenes of the MCs together. I would categorize this as a thriller or suspense and not a romance TBH.
This book reminded me a lot of Sicko by Amo Jones, just not as well done and RH.
Overall: 1.5 rounded up because there was enough to the mystery that I wanted to continue. I totally regret doing so though. I should have stopped when the H was dirty talking and hard while letting a stripper orgasm all over his leg.
This book had so many twists and turns that you would not see it coming.. BUT I absolutely loved how all the answers were wrapped up in this book. You will be surprised in one chapter, but that one part put all the pieces together. This was a good book. Would definitely recommend.
This book comes with a content warning in the authors note, please heed authors advice.
At the age of fourteen, a close friend, someone Milla trusted, brutally stole her innocence from her in the worst possible manner, and when she reached out for help, they were silenced, so she endured at the hands of her abuser, until she left, in the hopes that she would get a reprieve, instead her tormentor followed her, continuing to take from her, giving her that constant reminder that she will never be far from his sight.
Milla returns to her hometown after two years, the place that had her running, but now she has been reborn in pain and doused in cruelty, her world changed, for she has been painted in shades of brutality and moulded into something more, in the way he wanted.
As a child of a legacy family, one of money, status and privilege it is her duty to attend the prestigious Coldharbour University. She reconnects with her friend Lizzie all the whilst navigating through her studies.
Yet the three friends she was hoping to reconnect with - Hollis, Texas and Preston, they’re no longer the same boys that she grew up with. They regard her with contempt, yet she feels betrayed that they weren’t there for her when she needed them the most.
But he is there, a constant reminder of what she cannot escape. Because survival is all she knows, and she will do whatever it takes to get back a little normalcy, because separating her realities will most likely cost her more than what she is willing to give.
Hollis, Texas and Preston make every effort to get Milla to leave, subjecting her to further torment by there hands and the hands of others, but she is steadfast in her courage and strength to stand up for herself and get through this difficult time in her life.
With Milla back in their lives, Hollis, Texas and Preston are projecting a tough exterior, they have secrets of their own, yet all of them are masking there feelings for the same girl, one who they know is hiding behind a wall of secrets and lies.
They let Milla back into their world, into their lives, and into their home. They give her moments of comfort and pleasure, normalcy and stability, things that she has craved for a very long time, only she didn’t heed his warning, and when Adam makes good on his promise, she looses not only them but her friend Lizzie in the process.
Milla’s life begins to unravel, the chaos swirling around her. But not everything was what it seemed. When Hollis, Texas and Preston learn the truth, the lies that they fed into, the version they have lived by, do they finally understand that those closer to them betrayed them in the most unimaginable way possible.
Only when they learn just how East Bay was riddled with an undercurrent of evil, do they get an understanding of how deeply it ran. Do they realise the extent of their own stupidity and how they acted towards Milla.
When they get Milla to safety do they go after Adam, and the thing about secrets, they always come to light, for when they learn that she has a child, do they begin to understand the lengths she went to, to endure what she did, all for the sake of protecting her child.
And when everything is finally revealed, and the one’s responsible have been held accountable for their actions, and those wronged, justice is served. Can Milla begin to heal. Yet when she shares the pain with her father, he doesn’t hold her accountable for other people actions, does she learn that he played a part in helping her, and in that moment the pain and fear, of the emotions she had locked up deep inside of her, in the comfort of her fathers arms does she let go.
But not all is forgiven when Milla has that conversation with Hollis, Texas and Preston, where she calls them out for their actions. Knowing that they hurt her, they love her, but for her it isn’t enough, but it doesn’t change anything for her, for them, when it comes to Milla, for her they will wait, however long it takes for her to heal and find herself, because first and foremost her son Kai is her utmost priority.
And in time, do they break her resolve. For now she can bask in the warmth of her happiness, their love for her infinite, fulfilling her basest desires, giving her unconditional love and joy that she has never felt before.
For Milla, learning of her mothers betrayal, she becomes a pillar of strength not only for her dad, but her sister Delaney. Milla and Lizzie work on healing their friendship, the wounds raw, in time will they get back on solid ground. Having already accepted what has happened to her, does therapy help her to heal, but help her to bridge the gap of separation from her son allowing herself to finally heal from the trauma she has endured.
For they have changed each other’s life forever and they don’t plan on ever letting her go, for she is their happily ever after and they are hers.
This story is told from multiple POV, we get to see the growth and development of these characters through there strengths and weaknesses, what we see and feel shapes these characters, giving readers insight to who they are flaws and all, that they are in fact humans who all feel but handle what happened to them differently.
Their story will take you on a wild ride, having you turn page after page, this book had me from the beginning to the end. Reading this story, it enables the readers to really connect with the characters. The author knows how to write, and I will be coming back for more.
Highly recommend both author and book!

So- this book is labeled as second chance romance. But honestly, I think it's incorrectly labeled.
For a lot of the book, the MLs (Hollis, Texas, Preston) are either pretty dickish to Milla (FL) or they do hurtful things because they assume stuff about her without having a discussion with her. Preston was the nicer one of the bunch, until he made assumptions about her, thinking she was messing around with them.
Overall, there was nothing about this that was second chance love to me because the MLs had barely any positive character growth and they barely did anything to enact any act of forgiveness. I feel like bully romance would've been a more appropriate label, honestly.
First off, Hollis, Texas, and Preston don't grovel for all the emotional turmoil they put Milla through. For the number of times they flaunted other woman right in front of her face and saying cruel things to her.
Hollis, Texas, and Preston felt guilty for how they treated Milla after finding out the truth, but that's really it. They don't suffer or do anything to make things up for her. They don't fall to their knees desperately begging for forgiveness or anything like that. Which was really underwhelming considering all the things they said to her.
On top of not groveling, they don't respect Milla's wishes of wanting a break.
After everything she's gone through, Milla decides she needs a break from the MLs and she needs time on her own. 𝗜𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝘆, “𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂.” Absolutely rich coming from someone who decided to erect walls between their friendship in the first place because he was scared of dating her.
What makes things worse is that they do decide to give her space, but only for 4 weeks. After that, they apparently bother her so she gets back with them.....
#𝟑.) 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚
The reason why the MLs hated the FL's guts was because she moved away without saying a word to them......... That's it. That's why they repeatedly insulted her with words and baited her by humping women in front of her.
I'd understand their anger a little if the FL and the MLs were on good terms and she decided to completely vanish. But based on what was said, they weren't on the best of terms. So I think their anger towards Milla was completely unjustifiable and doesn't make sense at all.
It was referenced and said so many times that the MLs were afraid to get in a relationship with her before she left and they weren't ready for it. So, they pulled back from their friendship with her and built walls.
If they were willing to let their friendship with her go to waste because they didn't want to fall in love with her, shouldn't they have been happy she up and left? They don't have the right to be mad when what they did is no better 🤷🏽♀️ ---------------------------------------- Aside from the unlikeable MLs, another big issue with this book was the rushed ending and lack of details.
In the epilouge, it immediately cuts to a sex scene and then Milla tells us (readers) what happened during her short lived break. We don't actually get to see the MLs bothering her and going after her or what she does during the time she is away from them.
I think the best thing about the epilouge was Violet. I'm curious to see what her story is.
Coldharbour legacy daughter, Milla Rossi left home when she was fifteen leaving behind her family, friends, and the three boys who made her heart skip, but also broke it on an epic proportion. She’s now back in town and starting school at Coldharbour University and knows she can’t run into the boys — Hollis, Texas, and Preston — because they mean nothing to her now and… she has secrets she can’t tell anyone, especially those three. It isn’t until she runs into them on campus that she feels her heartbeat faster and the need to run far far away. Hollis, Texas, and Preston are not the same boys she left two years ago and she can’t help but wonder what happened to them but it’s not her business anymore. She isn’t the only one who exudes hate — the boys hate that Milla has returned after leaving them high and dry with no explanation. She means nothing. She is nothing. She’s especially is NOT theirs anymore. Until…. secrets come to light and the more and more the boys learn, the more and more Milla becomes more… becomes theirs… again. And this time, they’re not letting her go.
“A Twist of Poison” is my introduction to HR Penrose and I am hooked! Great writing, gripping story line, dragged down into the dark to come out the other side and get that HEA? Oh, yeah. Sign me up for anything Penrose writes. This book was a WILD ride starting with the worst day of the FMCs life and ending with the happiest of ever afters ever — especially after all the twists and turns and heartbreaking events throughout the story.
What I enjoyed most about the book was the FMC, Milla Rossi. This woman is battered and bruised and believes she’s not worth of anything BUT despite all of the horrible things that have happened to her, she is strong and determined and loved by so many that she was never really going to stay in the depths of the hell her life has become. Penrose could have developed her character differently but the strength she has is inspiring, at least to me. The MMCs, Hollis, Texas and Preston are the perfect villains turned golden retrievers (well not totally but to me they melt my heart) for their FMC. Penrose made each of these boys rough around the edges and not into their family wealth so they’re not spoiled brats. The secret society that Penrose introduces, The Owls, are ruthless when it comes to protecting the innocent and helping out the lords of the underworld. Without giving too much of the plot away. The Owls are sorta like bloody, violent saviors — especially for our FMC.
Also, BLESS PENROSE for setting us up for book 2 because this universe is one I am heavily invested in and I wasn’t ready for it to be over. Now that it’s all said and done, I’ll take Hollis, Texas and Preston wrapped in bows left on my doorstep, please 😝😘

What happened to me? I am reading darker stories these days and this one was the darkest of all. It was a little unnerving when I first read the blurb I was intrigued that what and how things are going to be but I never had thought that the book is going to start with the harsh reality of the plot. I was shocked at what I got myself into. It was a dark and intense story, it was difficult to keep myself together from hurting. Do not forget to read triggers before getting into it.
HR Penrose writes detailed stories and this one has all the important details step by step explaining things while camouflaging HIM, who was right in front of us. I don’t like him, he is a bloody psycho and gives me chills. The plot is strategically developed with multiple POVs to give us all the information about the past and the present so that when the future comes into play, we have answers without getting confused.
Preston, Hollis, and Texas are nice characters but Cane sees what they don’t want to see even if it’s right in front of their eyes, which is sad and pathetic. I shouted in my mind so many times to them and kept reading on. The additional small characters are meaningful and have a part to play, I liked Miles a lot and how he is. I hope to see it in future books may be.
Milla is strong but broken in many ways I can only imagine. I feel for her and the obsession she has become with somebody. It’s hard to see how everything goes down the hill. The story goes on becoming complicated and tangled up for the characters but when everything comes to light, the support shown by everyone was very much appreciated.
The ending gave us the hint for the next book and I am excited to see what the author comes up with.
After taking days to read this book I still don’t know what to think. It certainly had its moments at time with little twists that you might not see coming however…I was bored.
This book took me days to read because I kept finding myself wandering away from it to watch videos, scroll Instagram or just do something else. Then I’d come back 10 minutes later and not really remember or care about what I was reading.
Milla (pronounced Miller but with an A) returned to her home town after years away. She goes to college with her 3 childhood friends who she loved but due to horrific circumstances she had to leave. She’s being forced to preform and do things she does not want to do all for a reason we don’t find out until the end. There’s multiple twists and turns, the book is definitely dark romance, but it’s a bit chaotic missing an overall inclusiveness.
The sentence structure with the excessive commas drove me insane. Also, this book was long…too long! There were unnecessary scenes that could have been cut. Certain twists were entertaining and they were probably what kept me reading even though I thought of DNFing multiple times. I could have certainly used more scenes with the group as I didn’t feel a lot of love between them all.
This doesn't happen to me very often, but what I wouldn't give to read this book again for the first time!! It consumed my every waking minute! Did I get much else done? No. Do I care? Also no.
Milla's story was such a rollercoaster of raw emotions. She is a wonderful character and despite all of the emotional, physical and mental abuse she is subject to at the hands of HIM, she remained strong and fierce.
I will say I lost track of how many times I shouted at Hollin, Preston and Texas. How many times I wanted them to not just look at Milla, but in the end, the truth really does set you free! If I'm honest I would have liked a little more interaction with Milla and her men, but I also feel that the author kept true to Milla's story, only adding what felt natural to her journey.
The build up to learning who HIM actually is, was INTENSE!! I have so many note on who I thought it would be, and still wasn't able to pin it down, so when he was finally revealed... I was blown away!
I can't wait to see what comes next for this author!
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 ⚠️ There are triggers so please check the warning before hand⚠️
After years years of brutal torment at the hands of an abusive friend, she returns home to the place she ran from being his dirty little secret. Her vault of secrets, threatening to be ripped open by her past; paying for the sins of others. 💔😔
The boys, now men, who were once her best friends: Hollis, Preston, & Texas.
The trio are legacies as she is, but a part of a secret society. Fair warning, it is a very dark🖤 read along with suspense that had me unable to put my kindle down for long; I HAD to find out!
So many emotionally deep lines, but this one... This one paints 🎨 the feel of this book: One of the worst parts of being abused by somebody you knew was the betrayal; a person who should have protected you, chose to harm you.
Fantastic lead-ins to other possibilities 😁Lots of interesting secondary character; Ronnie, Drew, Thomas, Miles to start the list. Plus, Micah, Preston of The Forsaken MC. Tiny mentions of Paris Blue 💙 and Reign Marchetti from the author's Hollywood is Bleeding as well.
I don't even know where to start. Milla is one of the strongest heroines I've read about. She's literally living through hell day and day out. She still managed to remain strong and fierce, never gave up.
I was able to figure out the biggest plottwist right away but there were other one that left me with my mouth open. The author did a good job with giving us enough information that it made the story even more emotional and would have you hooked trying to figure everything out.
“You tethered us, baby. You linked our souls and bonded us all together as one, the four of us. Now we’re your underworld, ready to raise hell.” I loved all the of the guys. Even when they tried to push her away them coming together was inevitable. They were too obsessed with her to stay away. I do LOVE how at the end they gave her some time to deal with everything that she went through.
The story was really good. I would not mind if we get a novella about them. I would love to see Milla living happily and safe with her men.
This book is DARK and I loved every second of it! The darker they are the better they are. I mean, when stuff happens that are so messed up in a book that the triggers are a pretty big WARNING, then the more I want to read it.
I feel like there is more twists and turns, drama, kills, secrets to unfold and just so much all around that will have your head spinning like bettlejuice!
There was nothing light and fluffy about this book, but I certainly did like the Heroine because even though she knew she would get her punishments, she still went and did as she pleased knowing the consequences. Her childhood friends hated her not knowing why she up and left when she did and she was unable to give them a reason why. She lost them even though she loved them.
When everything unfolded at the end, boy did it almost make me fall off my chair because so much came out to light that I certainly wasn't expecting and it made the book that much more interesting!
Holy crap this was amazing and I loved every minute of it!!!! Milla is fiery and fierce. After going through everything she was still strong as ever.
This book gave me so many emotions it was not funny. I was screaming at Hollis, Texas and Preston to look and see more than what Milla was telling them. Argh 😠 I wanted to reach in a smack their heads together like seriously how many times did someone have to say something didn’t add up!!! Like come on boys!!! And the spice ummmm 😳 yep it certainly was there and I was down for that definitely caused some thigh clenches 😉.
Even though there is a happy ending like WTF is there going to be another with new characters??? I certainly hope so because the sound drool worthy 🤤.
⚠️ This book has many triggering elements please read triggers before jumping in. If you have no triggers go in blind.
Ahhhhh OMG did this book take me on a wild freakin ride!! Now what can I say about Milla. She is literally the strongest female character ever because she has been through so much. She’s been abused mentally, physically, and definitely verbally. That’s putting it mildly though because that fact she is so strong to keep living I mean wow. We also get introduced to her main men in her life that she has known since she was a child, Hollis, Preston, and Texas. Milla has had a roller coaster of a life and even though she has her men they are not exactly always there because of her secrets that she carries. These secrets all lead back to HIM. Just when you think you have it all figured out, nope we get another twist that just guts you. I mean I couldn’t even fathom what Milla has been through and that last final twist?!?! I couldn’t recommend this more but please read your trigger warning before starting. If you think you’re good then go add to your TBR.
Holy God this book 🙏 before you go gallivanting off and reading this book please read the trigger warnings if you have triggers because this definitely hits a few of the darker ones! But if you have no triggers then this book is certainly the one for you ❤️
Milla has to come home to uphold her legacy after living in the darkness for the last few years. No one could ever know or begin to understand the life she's been forced to live since she ran away. The only question is will her sanity survive?
Hollis, Texas and Preston have long since given up hope on the girl from their childhood and have continued to honour their legacies and "other" activities. But when Milla comes bursting back into their lives they have to once again learn how to bathe in the light and drown in the dark.
My only issue I have with this book is that there is not enough grovelling. But it has plenty of everything else 😈
Oh man was this book so good. I think I literally inhaled this story in 1 1/2 day's and couldn't put it down it. This is by a new arthur for me that now has a new fan after reading this book.
In this book there are many character's that I'm hoping get their own stories as there was thing's left open so hopefully 🤞🏼that means they'll be coming up next yeh I'm looking at you...Micah and Vi and your lil band of merrymen.
I don't want to give any spoilers away as I read just the blurb and went in blind and that's just the way to do thing's as you get the full effect of not knowing what's going to happen and believe me there are so many secrets, so many twists and turns, backstabbing, doublecrossing and that's just some of what happens.
There are triggers so Read them before going into this story, because this story is rough, dark and gritty, but it's so good you won't want to miss out definitely one to read for those who love those dark reads with triggers.
This is a new author to me and I went into this a bit blind. Wow! This was a rollercoaster of emotions, it was fast paced with plenty of drama and mystery and suspense. It has quite a few heavy triggers so If you have any triggers don’t go in blind. There are so many twists and turns that you’ll be kept at the edge of your seat.
The main characters Milla, Hollis, Texas and Preston are complex and well written and you’ll be rooting for them whilst simultaneously screaming at them too. Loved reading about their dynamics together. The side characters I also adored, especially Miles- hopefully he gets his own book too.
In summary, if you’re agree a dark why choose romance with secret societies, childhood friends to enemies to lovers, stalking and plenty of drama and suspense this book fully delivers.
This spider web of lies kept growing until it burst taking me on one wild ride. There were tears and times my kindle had to be set down as I processed the new information that the author had cleverly woven together.
Milla, Hollis, Preston, and Texas have always had a pull towards each other. Circumstances created a rift in their relationship and continuous lies added to it. As information starts to trickle to light the men and Milla have to decide if they can heal together or not.
The suspense.. The guessing.. It was great! So intense at times and I was so drawn to Milla and her life. I loved the balance of plot and spice!
I would check the trigger warnings to be sure you are okay reading the content in this book. Some of the content including SA and physical abuse did get a little heavy.
This is a great book to pick up if you need a suspenseful, why choose, secret society read!
A huge thank you to peachykeenas and H.R. Penrose for this eARC to read and review!
Hmmmm I honestly was so intrigued by this book and I was pretty content with the story and all its characters. I was hooked from the beginning and was very eager to see where the story would take me.
As I kept reading, I was intrigued, but just a little confused. I liked the characters, but their story felt a little too disjointed for me to be a second chance romance. I don’t feel like I got enough backstory or understanding of the characters and their relationships to feel the satisfaction of their reconciliation or the angst of a second chance trope.
Also.... the ending was so not satisfying in the least! The author skipped over the most important part of a second chance romance and then the book was over....
Overall, I liked the story, I just felt a little disappointed with the ending.
Wow, I was hooked from the very beginning. This one is twisted and dark but it was amazingly thrilling to read. I needed to know; who is he? I needed the answers and had to figure it all out. I read it cover to cover and was so hooked. Milla is such a strong woman to go through everything she did in secret for years. I couldn't figure out what he had over her to get her to listen and do what he wanted without much fight. Then BAM! I found out and everything made sense. Then there was Texas, Hollis, and Preston who were Milla's best friends from childhood who all secretly love her but those boys are then dense. I wanted to seriously smack them. They are clueless. If you can handle this dark and twisted story then one-click it right now!
This book is dark but Milla, the FMC, is a survivor. She trusted him and he used that to his advantage - then he kept her as his dirty little secret. I personally hated him and that feeling did not change. It's been a while since I read a book where I wasn't falling all over the villain. This "villain" stayed the "villain" in my eyes.
On the lighter side... Hollis, Preston, and Texas are all grown up. She ran from everyone, but now she was back. They are resentful but start to realize that something is off with her. It eventually clicks all into place, and they will do anything to keep her safe.
If you're looking for a book that will pull on all of your heartstrings, this one is for you. I was so captivated and found myself fully immersed in this book. Definitely recommend!
This book was dark and dealt with heavy themes. Milla has a secret, the person she thought was a friend turned out to be an actual monster. At 13 her innocence was torn from her. The few times she tried to tell she wasn't believed or the person was dealt with. She went through so much over 6 years. She had to leave her home at 15, but she finally decided to come back, but that came with its own problems. The boys she had left behind had grown up and they were wary about getting close to her again. They also happened to be part of a secret organization called The Owls. So much is kept secret can the four of them come together to help end some of the evil that's been hurting them?
This book is very heavy with the darkness. This story has many twists and turns that have the plot changing and when you think you have the pieces if the puzzle together the next chapter changes. This is told in a POV read and you see all sides of all the characters. This book had me hooked and feeling intense emotions throughout this story. The story will tear you apart. This story has secrets that are hidden and come out after final moments of silence is revealed. Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spicy 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Emotions 🫣😢🥵🤯 Tropes: secret society, MMFM, Kink, Alpha, possessive, TW ⚠️⚠️ read the trigger warnings as this is a very heavy dark read. Abuse, violence, trauma, r@pe, child.
"When someone's heart breaks, so does a piece of the world. It creates fissures and cracks within the earth to show us the permanent fractures."
This book really plays with your emotions. My heart broke many times for Milla, I was angry at several characters(I'm looking at you Hollis, Preston, Texas, and Lizzie), and hated others. I loved how strong Milla is, and I hope to see more of her in any future books about a certain 16 year old girl that we meet at the end. I would also love to see more of Miles, he absolutely stole my heart. I would have liked to see more of the scenes where the guys and Milla start getting to know each other again after being apart for so long.
This standalone book is dark and twisted with lots of revelations. Ms. Penrose does a fantastic job writing around the facts, giving little hints but not to reveal too much too quickly. This book is a great reminder that you do not always know what is going on in someone's life. We are only presented with what they want us to see. Milla is hiding so much of her life from everyone, you can't help but feel for her. Her one time best friends make assumptions that they later learn to regret. Overall this was a great story and would recommend it to other readers. Be sure to check the trigger warning before you read.
This story follows Milla, Preston, Hollis, and Texas. They are members of a secret society and were all friends growing up; however, Milla had to leave them, and the book starts when she comes back. It is not an easy journey for the group. My heart breaks for Milla and what she had to endure. I often found myself angry at the guys for not opening their eyes, and I admire Milla for knowing when she needed to take a step back. I hate how Kai was used. It is a dark book, so please check the trigger warnings.
Dark but oh so good. After an abusive relationship Milla returns home and this leads to secrets and pasts revealed. The boys she knew changed into men and they don't completely trust her but when she is whisked away they will move hell on earth to get her back. They are obsessive and I'm here for it. I love that in books so much but they are A-holes but I do hope one thing. That there's more to come from this author like this as I really enjoyed reading this.
4.5 stars Milla's story had me knots. The secrets she had to keep about the things she endured. It was gut-wrenching. Then there are rhe guys and what they went through she she left. Full disclosure read the trigger warning if you are sensitive to certain things. This had me feeling many emotions and my first by this author. Definitely will read more.
What a ride! If you like mystery, angst, pain, and an absolutely beautiful ending, you'll love this book! I was on the edge of my seat for so much of this book, and when there was pain.. oh boy! Did it ever hurt! Please check the triggers, as there are some dark topics. I really hope the author decides to continue in this world, especially after that ending!
This was secret society, very heavy theme (read trigger warnings for sure), it had enough twists that kept me intrigued & wanting to know all the secrets. The boys....UGH they all 3 had all she ever needed & wanted. That tug & pull was hard but so rewarding.
