This book was so good I did something unheard of: I bought a copy. I only buy books that feel like friends to me and that I know I will read again and again, like James Herriot, or Diana Gabaldon. And now this one. A good, knowledgable friend full of great advice!

Healthy Choices is one of several books I've read on nutrition and children, but this is the first one that I've found that I felt gave me something I could USE. My husband and I both work full-time, so not only is it unrealistic to suggest we should grow, process, bake and juice all of our own foods, it's extremely unhelpful as it leaves us feeling like parental failures. This book accepts that people are busy, and offers ways to sustain a more healthy lifestyle while still maintaining your other lifestyle (the one where you work, sleep, and possibly even entertain a hobby). While it's written for parents, the advice is applicable to anyone trying to squeeze more health (and more hours!) out of the day.

The book explains the "hows" of eating: the changes in our cultural norms that have affected our health (larger plates=larger serving sizes), how to eat well when you're low on time (add some veggies to that mac and cheese to make it a more complete meal), and shows you how to get your caloric bang for your buck. It also touches on things like sleep, activity, and attitudes, but by and large this is a book about nutrition. An excellent book on nutrition.

It was so basic. I think I found two or three points that were interesting enough to read them to my wife. I'll be honest though, I was behind on my book count so I picked this up for a quick read to get me back on track.
