The Book ‘Empowering Students with Technology’ authored by Alan November is a delight to read. Alan November is a renowned leader in education technology. Known internationally, Alan November began his career as a teacher in oceanography in Boston Harbor. He also led as a director of alternative education at the high school level. He also was a technology consultant, technology coordinator and a lecturer at a university. Alan November had worked to improve education quality through technology in schools and other industries.
In the book ‘Empowering Students with Technology’, Alan November talks about ways to improve teaching and learning by planning across an integrated curriculum. The book talks about empowering students through the appropriate use of technology and showing them how to learn what they need to learn. The book provides various resources and stories for students to make connections suggesting activities and reflection questions. The books suggest the use of both computer and internet-based technology that enriches critical thinking, problem-solving, and research skills empowering students to take responsibility for their own learning. Informed use of technology can help close the equality gap in students with advantages and disadvantages to provide mainstream education to all.
The book offers over 50 recommendations on website resources, lessons relating to real life experiences, information about online learning and examples for students to make real-life connections. The book provides students with practical strategies to develop an individual and collaborative learners by helping them understand the importance of a globally connected community, application of new electronic devices such as cell phones, digital equipment, and other common tools in student access. I would highly recommend reading this book.

Great overview of why technology is important in the education of our students. Provides multiple anecdotes and resources. Has suggested activities and questions for reflection. The chapter on primary sources was particularly instructive.

clueless parents/teachers can't and shouldn't compete with technology - they should use it - but how can they if they don't understand it - this book will hold their hands as they go through fast changes in tech available to kids, and even give them ideas on how to leverage it to help kids learn and live. i remember in a media edu conference in SF june 2005 the speaker told parents and teachers to activate their skype account rightaway and was met with blank looks. so he played back a phone conversation between 2 teens using skype and told the audience to shape up. i really hate the cover of this book - but pretty good layout design that mimics the look and feel of a website.

Learned how to encourage students to interact on the Read-Write Web, evaluate websites, and become independent learners using technology.
