I was looking forward to this book with great anticipation. My ladies bible study, previous to my joining, had studied Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow and could not stop raving about it! A Deeper Kind of Calm is a book about maintaining steadfast faith in the midst of adversity. I very much enjoyed reading the book as well as working through the study questions. It is a wonderful volume for dealing with the hard times in our lives.
The book is divided into a four week bible study that can be done on your own or with your bible study group. It breaks down into four different chapters from Psalms: remember what God has done (Psalm 77), hide in His presence (Psalm 49), cling to him (Psalm 63) and praise him for all we cannot see (Psalm 84). The concluding chapter wraps up the journey we are on to face the adversities in our lives and move forward. This book helps to learn how to positively handle the disappointments of life and discern the comforting truth found in God's Word.
Ms. Dillow begins by pointing out that although Psalms is generally thought of as God's hymnal of praise, we also need to remember that it is also a book about pain. She asks three questions:

Is it possible to go through the Valley of Weeping without falling apart?
Is it possible to have joy in the midst of suffering?
Is it possible to grow in intimacy with the Lord as we travel through the valley?

Ms. Dillow helps us find the answers to these questions in this enlightening bible study.

This is a very short study. I was doing this with my older daughter and we both needed an encouraging study that was short. Both of our current situations required a strength and a refresher study that reminded us of God's love and care of His children. This answered the need. I really enjoyed this one, especially the chapter, "I Cling". Sometimes we all need something that touches our hearts in a special way. This book and study was just that. It is a very short study, and because of that you are able to keep with it. There are personal stories in here that show you are not alone in your struggles.

This was a fantastic Spiritual Growth book. Included was a deeper study of 4 different Psalms. The book begins with 3 questions. Here's 1: "Is it possible to have joy in the midst of suffering?" As I read this book, I learned more than I ever had before that, "God and the psalmists say "Yes," and the author also said, "Yes!"
I would recommend this book for Believer

Pain, brokenness, and difficult times cannot be avoided in this broken world that we live in. This book walks through the Psalms to help structure our faith around God's word for the rough times.

This is an encouraging short study on the Psalms. I appreciated the author's unique stories in each chapter, which added extra depth. It has a four-week study in the back that you could do in a group setting. Linda Dillow is one of my favorite authors, and I enjoyed this book very much.

We know that life is often chaotic.

In the midst of apparent chaos, we not only need confidence, but we also need calm...

A Deeper Kind of Calm.

Coincidentally Providentially, that is the title of a book by Linda Dillow - A Deeper Kind of Calm: Steadfast Faith in the Midst of Adversity.

This fairly short, easy to read book is packed full of depth and encouragement bolstered by the honest transparency of the author.

Dillow has woven a beautiful tapestry of hope and peace with threads of pain, heartache, and fear.

Through her words and examples, she points us to some specific psalms to which we can cling and through which we can grow and find the peace of our Lord that is beyond any explanation or understanding.

As Dillow points us to our Savior, our fortress, she reminds us that, "Manmade fortresses always eventually fail. But there is a fortress---a high fortress, a secure fortress---that will never fail! This fortress is not a place, but a Person. His name is the Lord Almighty!"

What about our human nature? Our tendency to succumb to the overwhelming load of pressure and worry?

"When I feel weak, weary, and worried, I remember the deeds of God. I hide in His refuge. I cling in desperate dependence. I walk in faith. And these secret choices bring Him great glory!"

"Recently, as I knelt by the sofa in my office in the early morning hours and poured out my anxieties to God, He gently whispered, 'Linda, please go to bed. I'll sit up the rest of the night and carry the burden for you. Let Me hold you up in this way.' What a picture! The Creator of the universe sits up, waiting, watching, and praying for me, His child, while I sleep.

Do you need peace and calm right now?

Only God can give that deep-down rest for your soul that you so long for and need.

He has gifted several every-day people like Linda Dillow with a special way of sharing gut-level honest experiences of struggle and adversity lovingly peppered with His persistent peace and purpose.

Do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy of this little gem of a book. You may just come to know A Deeper Kind of Calm for yourself.

"God has a different answer for pain. His answer is found in the Psalms."

A Deeper Kind of Calm goes right to the Word of God to learn the answer to, "how do I handle the pain of life?" Using the Psalms, Dillow teaches us to remember what God has done, hide in His presence, cling to Him, and praise Him for all we cannot see. She shows us that it is possible to go through trials without falling apart. It is possible to be joyful when suffering. We can grow more intimate with God as we are challenged. Dillow shares stories of women in her life who have gone through trials. In their own words, these women lead the way in being victorious through our suffering.

In the last several years I have read many books on the topic of suffering and trials. This may be the first to step over the question of, "why," and explore how to get through! There is no lofty philosophy here, just the simply spoken words of the Psalmists and Dillow's plain explanations and encouragement. This is really one of the best books on suffering and trials that I have read. The book is divided into five chapters to read. At the end of the book is a study guide you can do by yourself or with a group. If you do want to know why God allows suffering, she has a page of resources you can follow up with. This is a great book to own and to give. If you're suffering or not, it will enrich your life and prepare you for the road ahead.

Linda Dillow is a wife, mother, grandmother, speaker, and author. She has been a missionary on three continents. She writes about intimacy, handling anxiety and disappointment, and living out the Christian faith.

A Deeper Kind of Calm 1D by 18Linda Dillow 19 from NavPress is a beautiful book intending to help one pass through the valley of weeping with Godly comfort. The book essentially deals with the four psalms 77, 46, 63 and 84. It talks about Holy Remembrance, Holy Confidence, Holy Longing and Holy Pilgrimage. Linda connects with readers 19 hearts and minds through narration of her personal and real life stories. The book is simple yet powerful.

More importantly, the book also contains four weeks of bible study contents suitable for group study. Women suffering with grief, pain, etc will find advice from this book greatly helpful and pragmatic. Linda enables us to move from the place of despair to a place of peace.

Linda also spells about the secrets to inherit spiritual blessings in the midst of pain. Anyone walking through the valley of weeping must know that it can become a place of blessing. All it needs is a little perspective from our end. This is possible when we are able to cling to God.

In this book, Linda analyses and describes about the possibility of going through the valley of weeping without falling apart, possibility of having joy in the midst of suffering and possibility of growing in intimacy with the Lord as one travels through the valley. Finally, she is able to give a concrete answer to the readers.

I would give this one four out of five stars.

A good book. I love everything I've ever read by Linda Dillow, so I think my expectations were just too high with this one. It's only five chapters (an intro & then four chapters, each focusing on a different Psalm). It just left me wishing she'd gone deeper. It really was good! And if it was by an author I'd never read, I'd probably give it 4 stars. I think it'd be a great book to study one-on-one with a friend that's going through a hard time since a bible study is included!

I read Dillow's "Calm My Anxious Heart" first, which I very much liked. This book is similar, but much shorter (4 chapters) and focuses on four psalms. It's good for a shorter study of the subject of joy in difficult circumstances.

Per Tracey Scholen:
Dillow writes about how to make sense of suffering and unmet expectations. The book is about learning to see circumstances through God's perspective. It is very light and easy read.

A lovely look at the Psalms with a guide for finding peace from anxiety and worry. I read this with a women's group and loved the discussions that evolved from the reading and questions in the back of the book. Great study.

It may have been that God gave me just what I needed when I needed it, but this book was encouraging -- looking over 3 different chapters in Psalms and how they apply to our lives.
