Dr. Brownstein's perspective of blending the best of conventional and holistic medicine shines through in this book. I took seven pages of notes, and the book is now on my reference shelf.

It was kismet that I found this book for the bargain price of $1 at my Friend's of the Library sale. I hadn't heard of Brownstein before that.

My experience with helping clients to balance their thyroid glands was well supported by Brownstein's experience. As an example, Brownstein is clear about the benefits of avoiding synthetic sweeteners and soy if your thyroid is not in balance.

One seriously useful piece of information in Brownstein's book is about the mycoplasm bacteria being at the root of fifty to seventy percent of autoimmune thyroid disorders. At last there is a possible answer besides "living with it" for those with Grave's and Hashimoto's.

Not one word of this book is wasted. I highly recommend this book to anyone improving the health of their thyroid, or who is working professionally with clients.

I'm looking forward to more of Brownstein's research.

Helped me better understand Hashimoto's and to know what kinds of questions to ask. I have now read it again, and I know that most western medical doctors aren't looking at the whole problem, just giving a pill to make the problem go away. I was told by one doctor that I needed to stop reading because he was the authority. Needless to say, I didn't go back and have since found a doctor that has me on Amour. Thank you Dr. Brownstein for writing this book!

Written on a very basic level. But, that's okay. I don't want to be able to speak fluent thyroid-ese, I just want to help aim people in the right direction. I'm excited for day #2 of my next menstrual cycle so I can start taking my basal body temp and figure out what's up with my tired little thyroid. Good times!

It was VERY repetitive. Some good info. But it could have been summarized in a blog article and saved me the $20 I paid for it. Okay, harsh. I didnt learn much new info, but someone new to a healthy lifestyle might learn a lot.

A comprehensive book for understanding thyroid disfunction covering Grave's, Hashimoto's, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue and Hypothyroidism. There is a lot of information in this book and it is presented in a fashion that is easily understood. Dr. Brownstein presents helpful information on understanding the testing for thyroid disorders and basic information on treatment using the functional medicine approach.

What I liked: Easy to digest information from the perspective of functional medicine, so outside what is generally considered mainstream. He has lots of data to backup his findings.

What I didn't like: Purely an estetic dislike, but the third edition looks like a self published book and the layout and cover are really unattractive. I didn't feel (at first) it would have any value as it is so poorly laid out, but once I got beyond the ugliness of the book design it is very informative.

Having loved "The Statin Disaster" by this same author, I ordered this book hoping to better understand my hypothyroidism and some actions I can take as recommended by a doctor (the author) who thinks about holistic solutions. A few "holy moly" take-aways from this book for me... he writes a section about diet that includes a few pages about Aspartame which (who knew?) metabolizes as formaldehyde in your body. Yikes!
And...In the diet section, he talks about changes that pretty much everyone I know should consider... eating organic foods (and why). Steering away from canned foods (I had forgotten the cans have a coating that is bad for you). Drinking ample amounts of water. WHY white flour and white rice are not good (many contain cadmium which is an industrial pollutant which can cause high blood pressure, anemia, kidney and liver damage)
I also now better understand why my doctor (also a holistic practitioner) sent me to a (more expensive) compounding pharmacy for natural hormones vs. the synthetic hormones you would get in a (cheaper) pill. Happy to pay extra for a more natural product now that I better understand the inevitable side-effects of manufactured hormones.
My neighborhood Whole Foods store can thank Dr. Brownstein because I am now there 2-3 times a week to get organic produce, unrefined salt (Celtic Sea Salt) and other products. (BTW - the cashier at Whole Foods showed me how to use their app at check out to save money; we also get a 5% Amazon credit with each purchase by using the Amazon Prime credit card). But I digress...
Really pleased I read this book... I learned a lot... and most importantly am actually inspired to act on many of the learnings.

Good knowledge on the subject but also extremely repetitive. I would have liked more information and a clearer plan on the more practical aspects. Diet was very basic. Eliminate refined sugar, eliminate trans fat, eat organic, drink more water, eliminate artificial sweeteners, and eat a balanced diet. I think his information on detoxification was oversimplified too. There are times where he references his other books in order to gain more knowledge on a subject. The simplicity of this book did make it an easy read and I got through it fairly quickly. While I prefer a little more detail (and maybe better editing), there was still a lot I learned and it can be very helpful for many people.

Wow another book read by dr. Brownstein and his immense knowledge on the human body and how to heal it!! Conventional medicine should follow and try his exams to treat the patients and not a “ lab test number” that has nothing to do with patients Main clinical symptoms. A very well written and easy to read and understand. Thank you Dr Brownstein.

This book is a basic easy to read and follow overview of thyroid disfunction. If you are the beginning of your journey with learning about thyroid health then this book will be beneficial, it’s very thorough. Though sometime repetitive. If you already have a knowledge base of the thyroid then this book will be all old information.

This is very comprehensive account of the science behind thyroid disorders and what life changes a person can make to mitigate the effects of thyroid disease -- both hypo- and hyper-. I recommend it especially to anyone who has been newly diagnosed.

Helpful information, sometimes a bit repetitive or salesy, but still written in a clear format that is easy to read and understand. I’ve found modern endocrinology to not be very helpful in understanding my condition and this book was able to inform and educate me.

Great information overall. It was written in 2014. Keep that in mind when reading the nutrition and water sections.

Useful information, but rather repetitive at times. Some significant effort has been given to layout to make the book look bigger. Every chapter is introduced with a page that has just the chapter number and title, and then the back side is blank, and then the following page begins the text on the bottom half of the page. So 2 1/2 pages per chapter of blank space in introducing the chapter. At 14 chapters, that's over 30 pages added because they couldn't proceed to the next chapter normally. Then there is a lot of space in between lines and large-print section headings every few paragraphs. Plus 8 pages of advertisements at the end for the author's other books.

There is useful information in here, but not nearly as much as I hoped for because of the repetition and blank space. The book could be easily formatted to be under 150 pages just by eliminating all the wasted space, and better editing to eliminate repetition would take it under 120 pages.

First of all it was a free book all I had to pay was shipping! Secondly I found myself going "hey that's me" way to often and thinking if I could only find a Dr. like him to help me get better it would be amazing. I have emailed the Author in hopes that he can put me in touch with someone in my area that accepts my insurance. If I was wealthy I wouldn't hesitate to travel to Bloomfield, MI to see him in person. He gets "it"!!!

Brownstein is a physician and Medical Director for the Center for Holistic Medicine in Bloomfield, MI. This book is a great beginner reference book for individuals with thyroid disorders. Brownstein discusses the various possible relationships between thyroid functioning and chronic pain, fibromyalgia, hashimoto's disease, and graves' disease. He describes gluten interaction and thyroid.

The book contains a lot of good information and explanations. What makes the book better are all the patient stories of their experiences. If it wasn't for the patient stories then I would have put it away without finishing. Glad I purchased it and read it through.

I did learn a lot about thyroid function. Some of the book was redundant, but overall it was educational.
