Emma Darcy is the pseudonym created by the married writing team of Wendy (1940-2020) and Frank Brennan (1936-1995). Their life journey has taken as many twists and turns as the characters in their stories, whose international popularity has resulted in over sixty-million book sales. With more than a hundred titles, Emma Darcy appeared regularly on the Waldenbooks bestseller lists in the U.S.A. and in the Nielson BookScan Top 100 chart in the U.K.

Wendy was born 28 November 1940 in Australia. Her sister was the novelist Maureen Mary (Miranda Lee). Her father was a country school teacher and brilliant sportsman. Her mother was a talented dressmaker. She obtained an Honours degree in Latin and initially worked as a high school English/French teacher. She married Frank Brennan, an Australian businessman born in 1936. She changed careers to computer programming before marriage and motherhood settled her into a community life. She was reputedly the first woman computer programmer in the southern hemisphere.

As voracious readers, the step to writing their own books seemed a natural progression and the challenge of creating exciting stories was soon highly addictive. They were published since 1983. In 1993, for the Emma Darcy pseudonym's 10th anniversary, they created the "Emma Darcy Award Contest" to encourage authors to finish their manuscripts. After the death of Frank Brennan in 1995, Wendy wrotes books on her own. She lived in a beachside property on the central coast of New South Wales, and liked to travel extensively to research settings and increase her experience of places and people.

Wendy Brennan passed away on December 21, 2020. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and sister, writer Miranda Lee.

Re The One that Got Away - ED brings us a light hearted romance with some seriously misogynistic undertones, not to worry tho, ED sorta makes it right in the end.

The h is a 22 year old dress boutique owner whose dad is a black marlin charter fisherman off the Great Barrier Reef. He just bought a big new boat that needs regular payments for the loan on it and earlier that day, he slipped a disc in his back and is out of commission. This is a huge problem cause there is a big American group coming in to for charter and they are paying enough to make the boat payments for the whole season, except they are expecting her dad to skipper the trip and they are paying so much because his boat is the one with the biggest and most catches.

The h goes to the airport to pick the group up and she sees the most handsomest, gorgeous man ever - and he is the 32 yr old American football player/film star who has chartered her boat. She takes them to meet her dad and is very nervous about how to explain the change. When they get to the hospital, the coach of the H is very arrogant about accepting the h as the substitute skipper, the retired skipper did not want to do it.

The group had run into him outside the hospital and derided him as being a bum and a drunk. Which he isn't, he is on his holiday so who cares if he has a drink or six. The h's dad is very upset, if the group cancels he will lose the boat. The h takes the initiative and offers a free day of fishing where they can land a 1000 pounder fish, if they do, they pay for and continue the charter.

The H, who has been staring at the h like she is tasty candy, agrees and then demands that she have dinner with him. The h is concerned about winning him over to accepting the charter so she sorta misinterprets his obvious come-ons. Plus she is the usual HP innocent, but she wants the H to take the charter, so she agrees to go. Then she runs back to the dress boutique to find the slinkiest sophisticated dress she can. She wears it to the dinner and the H instantly assumes because she is showing some cleavage and some skin that she is good to go and will be providing personal customer service on the trip.

The h is frantically trying to figure out a way to defer his carnal interest, so she orders a huge amount of food and questions him about American football - she had time to run to the library and do some fact checking before the dinner. Eventually the dinner is over and the H makes his move, he drags her off to his hotel room and is pretty demanding about what he wants. She manages to escape and he chases her saying some really nasty things and "tease" was the least of it. The h is pretty devastated by the whole situation and then her friend wants to know if she got raped in that dress when she calls her up.

(I throw the book every time at this point, from the description the h was showing some skin and it was slinky, but the whole thing of having an H assume she is available for whatever when she is obviously nervous and not making innuendos in any shape or form is beyond me. What is worse is that both women assume that they have invited rape for wearing an article of clothing. It was gross frankly, and I did not like the implication- it is one thing to walk down a dark alley in a bad neighborhood in minimal clothing, (every one should be able to do it, but no one knows what is out there so maybe a little caution is good,) quite another to go to dinner with a guy who has no reason to assume anything other than a lady wants to look attractive and especially when he is a client and I don't mean the escort kind. )

So the next morning arrives and the h is anxious to see if the group will show up. They do, but late and the h has to establish her skipper of the boat authority. She does, but the coach wants to call his own shots on maneuvering the boat while catching marlin. The h agrees as the aim of the charter is to please the customer, but when the coach catches a fish on the line, he insists that the h make a wrong move with the boat and he loses the really big fish.

Then it is the H's turn. He manages to get a big one, and the h is doing the maneuvering on her own when the coach's fishing hand, who isn't local and hasn't fished for marlin before, disregards the h's instructions on bringing the fish in and winds up overboard with his hand badly cut from the line. The h and her crew hand have to jump into the ocean to save him and then they have to medivac the man to port.

The H and coach are impressed with the h and decide to keep the charter. Fishing commences with the h urging the group to catch and release after tagging instead of killing the fish. Which they do. The group is staying off shore on a big luxury liner that caters to sport fishermen. The H asks the h to dinner and tries another seduction attempt, when the passionate kissing results, the H calls a first down in American football terms. The h knows from her research that downs are the number of yards needed to cover during a play that allows the team in possession to advance the ball. She realizes that while she is half way in love, the H is looking to score, and she isn't into that. She extracts herself from the current play and tells the H that she just doesn't have his experience and can't continue.

The H is pretty rotten again, but then it dawns on him that she isn't experienced at all. He apologizes the next morning and starts being nice to the h for the rest of the trip. They talk a lot and go on a night dive and have some kissing. The h is in love. More fishing commences, and eventually they catch a 2000lb fish in a very dramatic fashion with the h being innovative. The H has them tag and release the huge fish instead of killing it for the official sport record. (A sport fish record doesn't count unless it dragged to the official scale and weighed at the designated area.) The h is so happy that she succumbs to the mightly lurve club of the H. It is wonderful, then as they are drifting off to sleep, the H decides he has won a touchdown and tells the h.

Who immediately takes the dubious remark as the H was playing her for a score. She leaves him that night and the next day, she acts like he was a convenient way to lose her inexperience. The H tries to force her to say she loves him, but he isn't declaring any love back. The H gets mad and ends the charter a day or two early.

The h is very sad, but she is in love and he is only seeing a game goal. She doesn't want to be treated like that. Then the retired skipper who was temporarily crewing for her insists the H is in love, and that is why he only tagged the fish instead of killing it. The h is doubtful but the old skipper is insistent that she try and talk it out with the H. She goes to his hotel room and he invites her in, telling her she can get a new experience with group participation - tho he is quite a bit cruder than that.

The h runs off crying and the H leaves back to America. The h goes back to her dress shop as the retired skipper has unretired and is running her dad's boat and the dad is in recovery. The h is heart broken for several months and then the H's coach shows up to drag her America, cause the H is playing horribly and won't even date. The h agrees to go and we all take off for America.

The game is between the Giants and the Broncos, with the H playing for the Giants - except they are playing in Miami and there is no mention of it being a bowl game, so I am not sure why they are there. The H (who is the quarterback,) get sacked (which is very bad), and the h runs onto the field cause she thinks he is hurt. He sees her and penalties occur (with no cards) but the H and h are too busy declaring their love to care.

The H starts playing again and scores a running touchdown, winning the game and carrying the h off to his hotel room. The H explains he was calling her a touchdown after their big night of love cause it felt like the next big goal of his life, his finding a lady to marry had been achieved. The h explains that she thought he was just scoring to settle his pride and her pride couldn't allow that. They both agree to put pride aside and resume the previous passionate play for a Superbowl HEA.

This one was okay, but the dress thingy really bothered me. Still that was the attitude a lot back in the day, it was just a shock to see it so blatantly stated. The story is good and ED must have been reading Hemingway, cause the capture of the big fish was as good as anything in the Old Man and the Sea. The H apologizes nicely and the HEA was believable, so this one is worth the effort for a nice little read if you happen to catch it.

"The One That Got Away" is the story of Jillian and Taylor.

This story has lot of fishing talk. I mean a LOT. I didn't understand 1% of it, and I have no idea what was happening. The rest of the book is heroine playing ping pong with the hero's horny feelings. That's all I can say, this wasn't the best of reads.

Decent book, kind of enjoyable. The hero is a football star and a movie star and he comes along with his people for some fishing on the heroine's father boat but her father is laid up so the heroine has to take charge and she fears financial backlash, so she tries to get the hero warmed up to her by dressing sexily but that backfires when she almost does the deed with him and then tricks him to run away with his pants down literally. She is angry at herself for her behaviour and thinks she has let her father down but the next day the hero and his people show up. She has feelings for him but know he will leave and wants love instead of just sex, when they do get together and he says touchdown she mistakes that for his having duped her, months of separation follow, both of them are miserable, when the hero's agent approaches her and she goes to him.

Weirdly, 90% intense fishing and 10% football. 🤷🏻‍♀️

He’s mostly an asshole though, or close to it, even with the half-hearted misunderstanding aside. The author really walks back a lot of his aggressive, crude behavior but I just didn’t buy it.

Jillian, the h in this book is the skipper of a deep sea charter fishing boat for Black Marlins! With all the heroines and their many varied jobs that I’ve come across in the years that I’ve read Harlequin Romances, this is an effing first! It blew me away!

Ok, so she was forced to captain the boat for her father after a serious accident took him out of commission. But without her skill, ingenuity, and sheer bloodymindedness, they would have lost their boat and their number one standing in their local fishing area. But still!

So, the group that chartered her boat were Americans. The main person is Taylor, a top quarterback, an leading actor and the H in this bit of paradise. They’ve come to Australia to try their hand at Black Marlin fishing, specifically to break the work record.

They weren’t pleased to learn that the man they chartered to sail them was in hospital and his beautiful daughter would be skippering in his place. There were threats of law suits for breach of contract. (sigh... we Americans love to sue for every damn thing)

The h had to make things right and took a few unorthodox chances to try to resolve the situation. Some were more successful than others. She soon had the clients convinced and was off on the two week trip with them.

On the night before the trip, she and the H had a uncomfortable dinner that almost ended in disaster. The H got the wrong idea about the h and things almost went too far. While on the cruise, the misunderstandings continued between them both.

Soon, there was hostilities from the H. Blue wasn’t his favorite color. And when the h finally did give up her precious v-card, the idiot H had to say something stupid about a “Touchdown”. Smh Men are idiots.

Jillian was a truly wonderful character. I loved her guts to do what she did. Taylor was the typical alpha hero. No big spoilers there. The author did a wonderful job of explaining the processes of making Black Marlin fishing and making it interesting. This really was a delightful first for me.

When her father is injured, Jillian takes over being a skipper for her father's fishing charters. But she doesn't have the experience that her father does, so it's a contract breaker when American football player and actor Taylor Marshall show up for their Black Marlin fishing charter. In order to get them to stick around and pay for the full charter, Jillian tries to hook Taylor the old fashioned way, but having little experience with men, find herself way over her head. And honestly, this was a jerk moment on his part...maybe it was acceptable in the 1980's for a man to chase a woman out of a hotel calling her a "liar bitch" because he didn't get any. This was IMHO pretty revealing of character also, so not something I'd have forgotten real quick, but Jillian does and the charter goes on.

All the while Taylor and Jillian are flirting...Jillian is in love, but it seems that Taylor is only after the one that got away and completing the challenge. And this is when sports metaphors confuse. "Touchdown" tells Jillian that he never loved her at all. She fights back pretty viciously so Taylor won't get his victory and the two don't work things out. So there is a separation and both are miserable, but Jillian does go after him, with the help of his agent. It was good, especially for a 1987 HQN and I enjoyed reading about the fishing...it was new for me and was written well enough that I didn't feel like I was being force-fed information I didn't need. I just wasn't completely sold that Taylor Marshall wasn't a jerk for his earlier behavior...he seemed a bit like a date-rapist. What would have happened if he'd actually caught up to her?

This book was good. I liked the characters and the emotions. This was written well and pulled me in a little with feelings and excitement. I was smiling at the end. Great HEA. I learned a lot about fishing that I never imagined too. I would read this again but more for passing time or for something to read. Enjoy.

loved this read... book has actual backstory and action, and a heroine really has some skills and ability and works hard to save daddy's business (it's not described in a book how she's hardworking and worthy but all we read is about spa and clothes, this one sails a fishing boat)

The heroine is an Aussie skipper and the hero an American quarterback. He’s also a playboy and he immediately falls in lust with the beautiful Aussie girl.
She’s a virgin of course and she believes in love so when he tries to have sex with her just because she always runs away.
It was kind of cute because it’s obvious that the hero is smitten with her and only sees her and not the big marlin he’s catching every day, a sort of moby dick where MD is the heroine and the marlins are an excuse to have a grab of her big boobs.
I’m joking! He’s serious and even asks her to be her friend until eventually they have sex. Sadly the hero tells some things that he will regret, and the heroine understands that he only sees her as s challenge to win, but in reality he’s really in love. So she snubs him and he goes back to the USA.
Some months later his agent goes to her and asks her o help him since the hero is ruining himself in every way without her, and doesn’t even see other girls (which really amazes both me and the heroine), so everything is cleared up and all is well and he can go back to be the star he’s always been.
This one was really entertaining beside the detailed parts regarding the ship and the marlins, poor animals, that I wasn’t really interested in, but I loved some scenes because they are really old style.
The first night they meet, the heroine wears a very sexy dress and the hero basically salivates through all the dinner, then jumps on her like a starving beast and scare the bejeezus out of her. I liked the passion between them, even his kisses are something, and it’s very clear that he’s in love with her. He wasn’t bad and she was a bit on the naive side but a very strong woman anyway.
A good old romance.

Solid vintage Harlequin

Romance during a big game fishing trip was actually an interesting plot.

It started off really good.

The hero never really took off for me, he seemed alternately like an jerk and a gentleman.

I usually like my hero to be the one to do the chasing.

Still, an interesting read and I would've liked to know what happened with the H and h after she moved to the US to be with him.

Good story. Great heroine, who tries the bimbo tactic thanks to colliding circumstances, but gets more than she wanted, and ultimately gets better results once she just is herself.

Really liked the setting, and both the heroine and hero were very likeable.
