I finished the first book of 2024 in one sitting, cover to cover this afternoon - it was that good. My ADHD has made reading and writing very much a stop-and-start activity - so to stay glued in my reading chair for hours only happens if it's worth it and this - it's was worth it.
Like many of you, I probably pick up both business and self-help books, but they don't have a voice or content that fits, or feel trapped by a voice that is aggressive, hokey, or not compelling. Lisa Carmen Wang has written a fascinating hybrid of both topics, and to say that I'm moved and inspired is an understatement. Her story and vulnerability in sharing the highlights and challenges of her journey and obsession with lifting women up to escape the 'good girl' trap - it's startling. It's been a long time since I've read something both immensely practical but also deeply motivating. Challenging what messages women have in what stops their success isn't an easy read, but it's come at the right time for me. I see Lisa, Cindy Gallop and so many other women in leadership as huge inspirations because their vision of paths to leadership have less to d with the individual. They see a collective sense of empowerment among women as the ultimate goal, and that is the heart of the work we need to do as women. We can't Lean In without Lifting Up. To be individually successful is hollow; to provide the tools to help others succeed is to be rich and have meaning.
This is a book that combines personal stories with data, inspiration and worksheets, and is highly recommended if you want a way to think through what leadership looks like in 2024 as a woman. If you're a woman, read it and learn and be inspired - don't be put off by the word 'bitch'. And if you're not a woman, choose to read it too. Every voice that describes what we go through is a chance to gain empathy and learn how to practice allyship and to learn what support and celebration look like.
