Visual Research Methods: Image, Society, and Representation (March 28, 2007) Paperback

Rate this book
Visual research is reemerging across the social sciences as a significant, underutilized resource producing unique lines of inquiry and sparking innovative pedagogies. Stanczak's edited volume crisscrosses disciplines in ways that highlights the multiple manifestations of this newer interdisciplinary trend. As such, this volume will be useful as a methodological, epistemological, and pedagogical resource across disciplines such as sociology, education, cultural studies, anthropology, American studies, communications, gender studies, and political science. The text is organized around three thematic methodology, epistemological reflection, and theoretical and conceptual exploration. Each of these guiding themes is developed to greater or lesser degree in each chapter providing a navigational thread throughout the entire book. The author most explicitly address methodology in their essays but each also answers epistemological questions and suggests ways in which visuals facilitate theoretical or conceptual development. Each chapter is developed around a set of guiding questions covering at least three themes in visual methodology, epistemological reflection, and theoretical contribution of images. These themes provide a valuable framework for classroom use and comparative analysis by any visual researcher. A substantive foundational chapter explicates these themes more fully and offers a mini introduction to core visual research methodology. Reader's guide connects different chapters to different conceptual themes and methodological approaches, offering a roadmap to common issues and topics with which the reader should become familiar. Expanded list of suggested readings, arranged thematically within the general framework of the book (methodology, epistemology, and theory). Original and reprinted works by leading qualitative researchers across a wide range of fields, including Sociology, Education, Political Science, Religion, History, and Gender Studies.

An excellent book--argues for acceptance of visual images (especially photographs) as a form of qualitative research.
