As night-shift clerk at the go-to Quik-Mart for monsters with the munchies, Josh Caplan believes he’s seen it all. Battling lizard men, werewolves chasing cars in the parking lot . . . nothing fazes Josh anymore. Or so he thinks, at least, until a yeti with poor communication skills drops a dead skunk on the checkout counter. Josh can’t figure what a living, breathing shag carpet wants with him, or why it won’t leave him alone no matter how hard he ignores it. But hey, at least it seems harmless . . . if perhaps a little slow on the draw. But Sasquatch is plenty fast when two of Josh’s human customers try to out-monster the monsters. Times are strange when creatures from the hell portal save the day, but in the protective hands of a lovesick yeti and a sexy vampire boyfriend, Josh realizes that maybe his new normal isn’t so bad after all.

first book 2,630 words for 99 cents
This book 3,600 words also 99 cents
6,230 words for $1.98 so no matter how enjoyable the short stories might be they just aren't worth it for me overall (i did the math after i pre-ordered this one) since they are such quick reads i end up buying too many of them and spending more than i would on a real book. Especially since there are so many great free short stories out there.

Done with my rant. About the story. It was cute and funny. I did like that but it was very short and Colin didn't even show up until like last two pages. Even though it did kind of

but at this rate I'll spend 20 bucks before I even get anything like a complete story so as cute as they are it's just not worth it for me.

My huge complaint is regarding the price and the words I get. Just like Bubbles said, for 0.99 cent and I only get about 3,000 words?? And when I read on my Kindle, the story really starts at 21% and ends at 92%?? That doesn't seem like a fair price.

Technical/price aside, I enjoy this short story. Although this time, I like it a bit less because there isn't enough Colin, the hot-vampire guy who is now Josh's lover. This more like a snippet of another night on Josh's life, when he must deals with a yeti, who seems to courting Josh with bringing dead skunk and poisonous mushroom. I adore reading Josh's frustration because the weird rug monster cannot communicate with him. There is also a bit of action, when a couple of robbers coming to rob the Quik Mart.

It's a very quick read, and it's nice to read about Josh again. Just wish that I can get more pages next time. This is like only eating one two chips and I prefer to have a whole package.

My heart feels a bit crushed after reading Peek-a-Boo. Hopes dashed even. Still enjoyed the humor and cute fun. Nothing makes me grin my evil grin wider than a tale with monsters mixed into our day-to-day monotony with mischief and magic! :) But….

This story did not pick up where Pretty Monsters left off. I actually adore when an author plays with time, but this was not playing—it was a leap! It was such a fun cliffhanger too—I was hanging on! *shakes head* This installment was a fun, quick snippet with Josh and his night shift adventures filled with burritos, zombies, sasquatches, and a little action *waggles eyebrows* on the side. Fun and gruesome! But….

I felt like we missed out on all the good bits. Josh and Colin (aka the hot guy) seem to have a relationship now, but readers didn’t get to see, share, or feel the fun awkward, getting to know you emotions, tension, and fumbling. And I must confess, I was disappointed to find out Colin was a vampire. I was hoping for something….I don’t know…different and more hell portal’ish. Haha…Love the vampires, but I had my heart set on something special for the fanged hot guy with a wicked sweet tooth and grin! :)
But…

Still had a hoot here in Speed’s world and will be waiting for more!

Bring it on!

This series is like a serial with tiny snippets about Josh's job coming to life. The plot is very original in its concept but because it is so super short there is little time for world building. I hope that Andrea and Riptide Publishing turn it into a true serial with one snippet coming out each month. Even better would to have them come out more often if possible.

I really enjoyed this book and I have to congratulate Andrea for fitting so much into 3,600 words. I believe that its harder to write a quality short story then longer works.

The book costs 99c for only 3,600 words but when I stop and think about how much that dollar has to do I find that I am happy to pay the price.

2.5 Stars rounded up because of the humor and writing.

I didn't like this one as much as the first. I was a bit disappointed because there wasn't any development with the MC's or the plot. Basically, it was just a different short story involving Josh and a yeti with Colin thrown in at the end. I really like the story line so I hope the future books will expand on it.

Cute story, but it was too short for me to really get into it. By the time it gets going, it's over. That's really my only complaint though. It's a quick read and quite amusing. I'm waffling between 3.5 and 4 stars.

So far I'm loving this series. It's simple ficlets of Josh's life, but damn it's funny and the world building is intriguing. And the writing style is right up my alley too. I prefered that one to the first, so hopefully it'll just get better and better.
I find it pricey for the lengh though, but I bought the bundle so I feel less bad about that. With all the books added, it gets to a normal price for a book.

Andrea Speed is one of those authors whose writing really suits my taste. I started reading her stories after reading her least popular book and then I read them all. I loved each and every one of them. I like her writing and her characters and I adore her sense of humor. Peek-a-Boo has many of these elements, but it is not without the flaws, especially as a part of the series.

The story is the second installment in Josh of the Damned series. We find Josh where we left him – in the Quik-Mart dealing with the monsters and their unusual behavior.

Let's start with things that didn't work. It is clear that some time passed since the ending of the first installment. We know this because not only Josh knows his unusual customers better, but he is aware of Colin's true nature and they are in "sort-of" relationship. In my way of thinking, since this is a part of the series, all these things should have happened on page. It's an opportunity to move the overall story forward and additionally develop the characters. While he did remind himself to be cautious, Josh is fascinated with Colin in a way he would be with any other hot guy and Colin's supernatural nature doesn't seem to affect him or his decisions at all. He takes it pretty much in a way he accepted his customers – as slightly unusual, but nothing to lose your sleep over. This means there is no on-page relationship development at all and not much character development in the story, especially since Colin appears just at the end of the story. Peek-a-Boo reads like a snippet, an entertaining look on Josh's unusual life, but there is no general arc that connects the stories into one big picture. It's funny and entertaining, but it's also frustrating – not just because it's too short, though that is a part of it, but because it's static. If the changes happened, they happened when we weren't able to see them or read about them.

But, as I said, there are things that worked in the story and worked well. Ms. Speed's writing is crisp and capable of transporting you into this irregular Quik-Mart during night shift. It's capable of showing you Josh's almost involuntary sympathy for his unusual customers. They are accepted in this store, even if Josh cannot understand them always, even if sometimes grudgingly. And, of course, there is humor. I understand that humor is subjective, but Ms. Speed's is just right for me. Whether it's semblance of normalcy in a completely wacky situation, Josh's interaction with hell's creatures including one courting yeti or, simply, the brilliant details like "the silver-coated broomstick he used to shoo off werewolves who insisted on chasing cars in the parking lot" – the humor just works for me. And, as a humorous interlude, the story is amazing. As a part of the series, unfortunately, not so much.

Do I recommend it for you to read it? Yes, if you already started with the series. It's funny and entertaining, writing is very good and Josh is really likable character. If not, it seems the next installments will be published together (I've read this somewhere and now I can't find where) and they will have more story and more character development. That will certainly save you from the frustration. In that case, wait for additional stories, because the good things come to those who know how to wait. Recommended with some reservation.

This review can be found at Brief Encounters Reviews.

I did not review the first story in this series here at Brief Encounters Reviews, but I did read it and enjoyed the humour. This story is pretty well explained in the blurb. Josh is still hanging out dealing with the riff-raff that come out of the hell portal, but this time there is a gigantic Yeti which insists on bringing him things, like dead animals and rotten logs. Yeti’s don’t speak or appear to understand English, however when Josh’s life is threatened by two thugs, the Yeti comes to his rescue.

This story, while making me chuckle, definitely reads like an episode in a TV series, or a chapter in a comic book. It comes across as rather a monster of the month club. It’s cute, Josh’s manner of coping with the unusual situation of having zombies and werewolves for customers is amusing, but I wasn’t sure what the point is, beyond just being cute and amusing. And maybe that is enough.

The romance between Josh and his vampire boyfriend definitely takes a backseat. Colin does show up a the end to explain a few things to Josh about the Yeti, and to distract him from his pain, if you know what I mean. But that’s it. I assume Josh and Colin have been dating, as at the end of the first book they shared their first kiss, and this time Colin’s got his hand down Josh’s pants. But there is no relationship development on the page, you assume it happened sometime between book #1 and this book. I never got the impress that Colin is the great love of Josh’s life, just a cool guy whom he finds fascinating.

There is nothing wrong with the story. As I said, I did find myself chuckling at a few lines, it’s written well and Josh’s slacker attitude comes across, but the series does seem to exist almost solely to reveal humourous monsters to us, and experiment with how we think they might behave in our world, if they weren’t trying to kill us. So if that kind of thing appeals, I can see readers quickly gobbling up new installments of this series, but if you are looking for a relationship driven series, I don’t think this will be it, unless the author changes tack further down the road. Very much a case of either you’ll love the series, or find it frustrating in such small chunks without much seeming overarching plot as of yet.

I fell in love with Andrea Speed’s Josh of the Damned stories in Pretty Monsters. The follow-up to the first book, PEEK-A-BOO, is just as good and it had me laughing out loud right off the bat. You know you have a good story on your hands when you giggle continuously until the very end of the story. The story picks up a few months later after Pretty Monsters and we find Josh, still working the late shift at the Quik Mart, cleaning up after zombies, scaring an occasional werewolf away and falling, for his vampire boyfriend. The author delves into this story with humor, action and a love sick yeti that I didn’t anticipate this time around. The author does an amazing job packing a lot of action into this short story-it’s only 17 pages-and gives the reader some amazing characters to enjoy. The writing is tight, the story moves quickly and the characters are very intriguing. What I love the most is, this author isn’t afraid to give the reader a few chuckles as Josh tries to deal with the monsters that love to visit the Quik Mart—human and otherwise. I love a book that leaves a smile on my face and makes me eager for the next one.

Andrea Speed hits a home run with this next installment in the Josh of the Damned series and I, for one, am eager to see what else happens to Josh at the Quik Mart. What will be next? Plus add in a hot boyfriend, who is a vampire, a few monsters that you don’t anticipate and stir. You got the makings of a series that will leave you giggling long after the last page is read. I adore this author’s other work and can’t wait for the next short story in this series. Run-don’t walk-to grab a PEEK-A-BOO and settle in for a howling good time.

Peek-a-Boo sees us back at the Quick-Mart with our intrepid, slacker hero, Josh. Inexplicably, my reader thinks it’s entitled Peek-a-Book. Anyway, something huge and hairy comes in and places a dead skunk on the counter. It can’t talk and copies Josh’s gestures. Josh convinces it to go then cleans up the mess. He then gets himself comfortable with a magazine and waits for the rest of the night to happen. Then the Sasquatch(?) returns with a rotted log, then he watches Josh through the door. Eventually he seems to give up and go away. Josh’s night returns to normal. Okay, it returns to what passes for normal for a Quick-Mart cashier next to a portal to hell. Some customers come in and try to rob the store. The Sasquatch becomes enraged, attacks the would be robbers, and drags their bodies from the store. When Colin comes by to visit Josh he explains the Sasquatch is actually a Yeti, gender unknown. The Yeti was gifting Josh with some delectable eats, Yeti style! The simple life of the Quick-Mart clerk just keeps getting more complicated.

This book was hilarious! Josh’s inner monologue as he is confronted with ever stranger monsters is brilliant. Despite being young and a clerk at a convenience store he is an ambassador to the human world for all the creatures that wander out of the hell portal. His nonchalance about extreme, ludicrous, or extremely ludicrous situations is the stuff of classic comedy.

This review was originally published on my blog Joyfully Jay.

Peek-A-Boo is the second installment in Andrea Speed's Josh of the Damned series. It continues the story of Josh as he navigates work at the Quick-Mart, handling all sorts of creatures making their way out of the hell portal in the parking lot.

In Peek-A-Boo, Josh attracts a friendly yeti who won't stop giving him crazy things instead of payment. Just as he finally manages to convince the yeti he doesn't want his gifts, Josh is confronted with an even bigger problem in the form of two humans out looking for trouble. Luckily sometimes having monsters hanging around can be a good thing.

Like the first book, Pretty Monsters, Peek-A-Boo is a very short story that focuses on Josh and his crazy experiences at work. I love Josh's voice and hearing the weary yet totally accepting way he handles all manner of oddities that roll through the door of the Quick-Mart. This story has great humor and a sense of fun. Even in the small number of pages we are still able to catch up with Josh and life around the hell portal, as well as get a fun a little story (plus more of hot vampire boyfriend Colin). If you enjoyed Pretty Monsters, you will find a lot to like in this second installment.

While I thought the first book in this series had great potential, the 15 page length was really disappointing. Just when the story was getting good it ground to a halt. I was waiting for this one to come out because I thought maybe the first book was more like a prologue and the next one would be full-length. But this one is only 12 pages? For the same 99 cent price? Sorry, that's not worth the bang for my buck. If this were done in the manner of Jordan Castillo Price's free serial shorts like Magic Mansion or Zero Hour (giving readers a few chapters a month) then I would be ALL over this. Great potential, interesting world and characters, but the packaging and execution make me feel like passing. Sorry.

This series is not only funny and creative but it crosses so many lines. It isn't strictly paranormal or romance or adventure. It is all of those things. The stories are little bites of the larger story that you can read pretty quickly. The quick shots of of story have a comic book type feel. It doesn't allow the reader to get too deep into the world without reading more than one of the stories at a time but each piece feels vivid as if you were watching a movie or reading a comic. Josh is a great narrator who feels like many of us do- average and stuck. But he ends up saving the world from destruction by a hell dimension, with a hot boyfriend and a protective yeti guard dog. It's not such a bad existence really... even with selling burritos to gross zombies and smelly werewolves chasing cars in the paring lot. I give the three books in this series 3 fairies for fun and enjoyable reads.

If you would love a good giggle, pick up this short story of Josh of the Damned and prepare for a laugh. This is the second story in the series of short stories about a young man name Josh who works at a Quik Mart that just happens to have a hell portal in its parking lot. Its customers range from zombies looking for a frozen burrito fix (I don't look at frozen burritos quite the same way anymore), lizards after snacks, and the occasional Sasquatch. Oh and did I mention he has a vampire boyfriend? Josh deals with everything that happens with a marvelous sangfroid that is a wonder. It is a very quick read but so full of humor that it leaves you wanting so much more.

And don't miss the first story in the series, Pretty Monsters, Josh of the Damned #1. Go, go on, run to get them. Get a Snickers Bar, and read. And laugh.

"There weren’t exactly a whole bunch of people beating down the door to become the night shift worker at this Quik-Mart. Nobody except Josh wanted the job."

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want the job either, certainly not when the yeti shows up with a dead skunk to pay for his purchases. Of course, with my odd sense of humor, I'd have had way more fun with that than Josh did. Poor Josh, he just wants him to take the nasty, dead thing off the counter and out of the store. Oh, and to stop playing peek-a-boo with Josh through the door.

But when the rug monster ends up saving Josh, he can't be too upset, even after Colin tells him the yeti was courting Josh. How cute. So, yeah, maybe like Josh, I'd have to keep working there, just to see what else came through the door.

Josh's job as a night clerk at the Quik-Mart is anything but 'normal'. At least it's interesting-when your customers are monsters that include zombies with a yen for frozen burritos. And though Josh believes there should be hazard pay, his job DOES come with its perks; his boyfriend Colin, who just happens to be a vampire. Then an unexpected attack has him wishing for more than a silver coated broomstick under the counter, yet he's surprised by his savior. Now he only needs a guide to understanding the strange courtship rituals of what might be a relative to Sasquatch, some TLC from his Hot Guy and his set.

This next installment is a fun quick read; definitely left me wanting more.

This series makes me happy. I don't care if it's not 100 pages per book, Josh and his customers have the magical power to bring me to them. I like Josh's voice, his acceptance of whatever the night dishes out to him. The rug monster was ugly cute and endearing in his perseverance, it made me laugh out loud with his antics and peek-a-boo and I should re-read it all again to list in how many different ways Josh called him. The cover art is pretty perfect and it makes the sweetest candy out of thise series. Mooooaaarrr!

The story picks up where Josh's first encounter ends...
Except this time... Instead of his hottie vampire boyfriend...
He makes a friend that he is not to sure he wants... a Yeti
I have to say that Ms. Speed kept me chuckling through this one as well.
And I do have to hand it to Andrea for keeping the story interesting and fresh... Well, when you read this story, it is not quite so fresh, hahahaha!
But I was very happy to see Colin return! But with that said, I am kinda wondering if our convenience store clerk will find someone else who will make his nights worth while...

Fun and funny and adorable. What a delightful series. I'm hoping that the next ones might be just a little longer, though.

Some Favorite Quotes:
Josh's first impulse was to scream, but he bit his bottom lip instead. It seemed like a slightly less girly response to the bloody animal corpse on the counter.

He felt like screaming, and shitting his pants was still an option, but he didn't have a spare pair to change into, and no one wanted to be the stinky guy on the bus.

"We're monsters, you know. That's what we do."
