41 books132 followersFederico Andahazi is the son of Bela Andahazi, Hungarian poet and psychoanalyst, and Juana Merlín. During his adolescence, he began to read the classical Argentine and universal authors. He used to escape from school, that reflected the oppressive military dictatorship ruler, to meet with friends in bookstores and bars on Corrientes Avenue, emblematic place of Buenos Aires culture.
It was at this time when he began writing his first stories. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Psychology (Universidad de Buenos Aires); he practiced the psychoanalysis a few years, while he was working on his short stories.
In 2008, Andahazi published his first book of nonfiction, Pecar como Dios manda, Sexual History of Argentines. The essay runs in an hypothesis through all his work: you cannot understand the history of a country if you don’t know the history of sex that gestured it.
With a prose that does not forget the novelist, the author conducted this first volume in an exhaustive investigation that starts from the original cultures and reaches the May Revolution.

"Οι Ελεούσες" του Αργεντινού Federico Andahazi είναι ένα βιβλίο που βρισκόταν στην βιβλιοθήκη μου από το 2001 και για κάποιο λόγο συνεχώς το προσπερνούσα. Πολύ κακώς,μιας και τελικά απόλαυσα στο έπακρο την ανάγνωση αυτού του σύντομου αλλά μοντέρνου ,γοτθικού μυθιστορήματος.
Οι περισσότεροι ίσως γνωρίζετε την ιστορία του γραπτού διαγωνισμού μεταξύ του Λόρδου Μπάιρον, του Πέρσι και της Μαίρη Σέλεϊ και της αδερφής της Μαίρη, Κλερ Κλερμόντ, που οδήγησε στη σύλληψη της ιδέας για το μυθιστόρημα Φρανκενστάιν. Το πέμπτο άτομο που ήταν με την ομάδα ήταν ο John Polidori, προσωπικός γιατρός του Λόρδου Byron, στον οποίο αποδίδεται η συγγραφή της πρώτης ιστορίας βαμπίρ.

Was geschah 1816 wirklich in der Villa Diodati, als Mary Shelley Frankenstein schrieb und Polidori The Vampyre; A Tale? Zusammen mit Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley und Marys Halbschwester Claire verbrachten sie einige Zeit in der Villa am Genfer See und vertrieben sich die Zeit mit dem Erfinden von Geschichten über übernatürliche Ereignisse.
Hier wir die Geschichte aus der Sicht Polidoris erzählt. Aber es erwarte bitte niemand historische oder biografische Fakten. Der Roman ist selbst eine Schauergeschichte. Es geht um den Pakt mit dem Teufel, den hier zumindest einer schließt. Darüber hinaus aber auch um eine monströse Kreatur, die einen besonderen Lebenssaft benötigt, um zu überleben (nein, kein Blut). Und es geht um Literatur, die man sich einverleibt.
Spannend, originell und witzig. Und jetzt muss ich Polidoris Vampir lesen.

There's certainly more than the occasional old-fashioned moment here that I could complain about. But Andahazi's ribald inventiveness and breezy prose are hugely enjoyable. The translation is very idiomatic; I have to remind myself that this was originally in Spanish. Great fun so far, and Andahazi and I do share some ahem obsessions.

Sometimes I pick up a book thinking it’s going to be something that it really isn’t going to be. This is such a book. Believing I was going to read a gothic novel about vampires, I unwittingly went down a different path, which basically blew my mind. Except, my mind wasn’t ready to be blown away just yet.
Most readers know the story of the creation of FRANKENSTEIN, one of the great horror novels in the English language. That book came together after the infamous 1816 competition between Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Polidori. It is the latter who is the focus of this book, although he was better known as being Lord Byron’s personal physician. Polidori is now known to also have been the author of THE VAMPYRE, a short story he concocted as part of the 1816 writing competition and which is considered to be the first entry in the romantic vampire genre.
This novel takes place as Polidori and his famous friends travel about the Continent, heading for their gothic meeting where the group will begin their writing contest. The women of the title are actually three sisters who can only survive off the, umm, seminal fluid of young men. Two of the sisters are beautiful because, like vampires, their appearances are enhanced once they have, umm, partaken of the men. The third sister, however, is a misshapen monster who is also a genius at creating fantastic prose. If she doesn’t get her regular doses of the, umm, fluid, she starts to die as do her sisters.
Poor John Polidori is made fun of by his famous companions and as his mental faculties start to wander away, he realizes that the merciful women will help him to achieve the fame and fortune he so wants. His primary goal is to show up his master, Lord Byron, and if he must give some of his, umm, fluid away, then so be it.
So, I started reading this believing it was going to be a mishmash of Frankenstein and Dracula, but, as usual, I was wayyyyyy off base. Instead, I ended up amongst pages of soft porn which is okay, I guess, but a bit unexpected. The writing is brisk and the characters do come alive, but it was a bit much for me. I think Goths would be more into this than I. In real life, John Polidori died a young death, probably by suicide as depression overtook him. I certainly hope it wasn’t the monster sisters.

An easy-read, purely ghotic short novel (it´s short, isn´t it?), with semi-erotic and intentionally disgusting storyline. Love the inversely proportional image of intelligence and physical disgust, where the female protagonist (don` t remember the name) is both exceptionally smart and a pure mockery of nature. The way she survived her first of many rejections by society - the moment she was born - and all that followed was so abstract, grotesque and twisted that it´s almost a joke. And the unbreakable connection between she and her sisters is absurd, yet still kinda sad and emotional. The end is, unlike the rest of the novel, very much humanlike, so to say... almost "Kafkanian", it closes a circle around a desperate, helpless man without any hope left.
A novel for those with strong, ghotic stomach and erotic/horror loving romantics.

Oscuro, intrigante y muy atrapante. Pero a partir de la mitad se pone rarísimo y tengo que admitir que el incesto me tomó por sorpresa. Igual me lo leí en dos días. Una estrella extra por decirle a la c0nch4 "los labios silenciosos".

Sublime! Esta pequena história nos mostra como se originou a literatura gótica.
Repleto de alguns dos grandes nomes desta literatura como Marry Shelley e Lord Byron. Possui um tom biográfico e nos revela como surgiu "Frankestein".
Todo se passa numa noite assombrada... Em que quatro amigos decidem escrever contos sobrenaturais... Shelley cria nessa noite o que seria o inicio da sua maior obra. Estava longe de imaginar as proporções do seu sucesso...
Fragilidade, amores renegados, desespero, medo, morte... São tantas reflexões que este pequeno livro nos dá! Necessitaria de ser maior para todas poder ser desenvolvidas mais abertamente. Fora esse pequeno pormenor... Foi uma história que me surpreendeu bastante!

El verano de 1816 es uno de los momentos más icónicos de la historia de la Literatura universal. Por esa época Lord Byron se encontraba en Suiza junto a su médico —no su secretario como afirma el libro en cuestión— donde pronto se les unieron Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley y su hermanastra Claire Clairmont. Ese año el mal clima los obligó a pasar más tiempo del que pensaron dentro de Villa Diodati por lo que para pasar el tiempo se entretuvieron inventando historias para asustarse entre ellos.
Todos conocemos que allí Mary Shelley comenzó su novela más famosa: Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo, pero no fue la única digna de esos encuentros, pues John William Polidori gestó allí su relato más conocido: El vampiro.
En la novela seguiremos los días de Polidori en la villa, su difícil relación con Lord Byron y los invitados de este. A la par de esto seguiremos la correspondencia que Polidori tiene con Annette Legrand, un personaje que no parece ser de este mundo —o al menos de encima de la tierra— que se fija en él, incluso antes de su llegada a la villa y que le propone un trato: darle una historia que lo pondrá en los libros de historia de la literatura; esto a cambio de que él acceda a ayudarle a ella y a sus dos hermanas a mantenerse con vida.
La novela de Andahazi se presenta como la narración de una historia oculta sobre los acontecimientos de los días que pasaron los ilustres visitantes en Villa Diodati en 1816 y que desembocaron en estas dos obras. Para hacerlo el autor se sirve de descripciones muy detalladas de los lugares y de un juego entre la narración y un conjunto de epístolas que sostiene Polidori con Annette Legrand, personaje clave para la historia paralela que propone Andahazi.
Con un preámbulo corto que busca darle un toque de veracidad a la historia, pronto nos encontramos llegando junto con los personajes a Villa Diodati para vivir allí los acontecimientos que ya describí. Entre ellos se van mezclando las añadiduras narrativas que pretenden darle la veracidad que la historia merece y que exploran la vida del atormentado médico de Lord Byron.
Lamentablemente, siento que es una buena idea, pero una mala ejecución. Pronto la narración va por las ramas más lejanas que uno se puede imaginar y que en lo personal no logré conectar fácilmente; eso sin dejar de lado el hecho de que el ritmo de la historia es inconstante, por no decir que casi inexistente en algunos pasajes. Eso mezclado con escenas de sexo regadas por el libro, un par de ellas un poco innecesarias y extrañas que la verdad, sobraban un poco.
Personalmente, tengo cierta piquiña con este tipo de libros que buscan abordar “la historia detrás de” y que se sirven de acontecimientos de los que se tiene tanta información al respecto para poner a volar la imaginación. Me molestan sobre todo por el hecho de que pronto me obsesiono con el tema y comienzo a buscar información, por lo que pronto descubro las imprecisiones históricas que los habitan, bien sea intencionadas o simple olvidos; pero que me molestan mucho porque llevan a distorsionar la historia y a proliferar una variante inexacta de ella. Creo que el principal problema, entonces, soy yo ante este tipo de libros.

Romaanissa tuhotaan osa tästä ajatelusta antamalla naiselle kynä (kuten Margaret Atwood Orjattaresi-dystopiassa kirjoittaa: "Pen is envy") ja päästämällä teksti vapaaksi mielen vankilasta, ruumiin sisälle vaikuttamaan. Syömällä sanat lukija todella sisäistää tekstin ja sen sanoman.

I really wanted to like this book. It sounded right up my alley - I love Frankenstein, and so novel that imagined what went on at the Villa Diodati that fateful week when it was written, and what led Polidori to write The Vampyre and subsequently commit suicide, was very appealing. Plus, I've been wanting to read more works in translation, so an Argentinian author's take on this story was even more intriguing.
Well. The result teetered on the edge of intriguing and unappealing for awhile, but eventually landed squarely in the distasteful (no pun intended) and weird category. While the idea that most of the second-rate literature in the world canon was "ghost" written has a certain dark humor, ultimately this book left me wanting to take a shower and use strong mouthwash.

Un récit gothique délicieusement rétro s'inscrivant en pleine histoire vraie. 150 pages de plaisir, qui vont directement à l'essentiel, tiennent en haleine et offrent une fin bien trouvée. Du tout bon.

Lieliska spēle ar minējumu sistēmām: par stāstu aiz stāsta!

Sin dudas, esta lectura se disfruta más si te sabes la historia de ese verano de 1816 donde Byron, Polidori, Mary y Percy Shelley jugaron a inventar relatos de miedo, y aquel excéntrico William Legrand que Poe convirtió en cazador de tesoros. A mí, personalmente, me encanta encontrar en un libro estas reescrituras de la historia. Ese gesto de darle un giro aún más gótico a lo gótico mismo me parece bastante acertado. Me mantuvo intrigada todo el tiempo: cada giro de la trama me sorprendía más que el anterior, y no podía dejar de leer con esa mezcla de placer estético y escalofrío.
Ahora vámonos a los temas y conceptos.
Lo que más me deja marcada es esa idea de voces silenciadas en el subsuelo de la historia de la literatura [la monstruosa trilliza]. ¿Pensaron en por qué el esperma era el sustento de vida mientras que era la mente creativa de las historias? No sé si fue la intención del autor, pero hay mucho simbolismo ahí: para que su voz exista, necesita chupar —literal y simbólicamente— de esa fuente de poder; pero... la dependencia se invierte porque sin ella, no existirían los cuentos que los hombres luego se apropian.
Lo monstruoso, lo que se esconde en el subsuelo, resulta ser la verdadera fuente de la literatura gótica. Y la queso.
Estos libros siempre me dejan pensando en las verdades escondidas que le inyectan mucho misterio a la existencia humana.
Ahora vámonos a los temas y conceptos.

Lo amé. Es muy entretenido y la historia te atrapa (en mi caso, tardé menos de un día en terminarlo). Andahazi captura la esencia de la novela gótica y nos trae un relato macabro y un tanto erótico. Si algo no me agrado fue que se trata de uno de esos libros en los que el protagonista es tratado de forma tan vil por sus semejantes que uno, simpatizando con él, por momentos se enfurece. Aunque no veo esto precisamente como una falla. Además, la prosa es tan hermosa que te hace disfrutar de cada página, incluso de aquellas en las que se describen las cosas más repugnantes (cosas que en este libro abundan).

I finished "The Merciful Women" by Federico Andahazi. It was a very quick, easy read. It's a semi-erotic, gothic mash-up of Dracula, Frankenstein, The Gold Bug, and the story of the summer when both Shelley's Frankenstein & Polidori's The Vampyre were written. If you're familiar w/ most or all of those stories/events, you'd probably get a kick out of this book. The tone veers between creepy/gothic, semi-erotic, and campy send-up of the various books & events. It's also a bit of a statement on literature & authorial inspiration/creativity. I'd rate it a relatively fun (early) entry for my October 'spooky' reading....

A minha querida Cris ofereceu-me este livro. Foi uma leitura tão prazenteira que li tudo o que até agora Andahazi publicou. Como a minha língua materna é o Castelhano não tive dificuldade em ler na própria lingua do autor o que é muito bom. Pena que não possa fazer o mesmo com as obras de Murakami!
My dear Cris gave me this book. It was a pleasant reading so I read everything published so far Andahazi. As my first language is Castilian, so I had no difficulty in reading the author's own language, which is very good. The pity is that I can not do the same with the works of Murakami!

Ella sobrevive solo con semen, así que su otras dos hermosas hermanas tienen que realizar un juego de seducción porque si el monstruo muere ellas también lo harán...

Tomen un libro, le agregan una porción de erotismo, mézclenla con una porción de vampirismo (suena redundante, no?), y adornen con una pizca de novela de época. Es la receta de un ameno trabajo con una propuesta final que se antoja. Mary Shelley, Lord Byron platicando en una sala, no suena mal.

Me encantó. Siempre lo recomendaré. Cuando se va desmarañando la historia es una cosa de no creerse. Me encanta que el autor haya propuesto que ese clásico de clásicos no fue escrito por quien dicen que lo escribió.

📖 My first thought on completion of this book (and several times throughout reading) is “what a bizarre book”. I very much think it will be like marmite, you will either love it or hate it. I’m glad I read it as it is certainly intriguing and challenging to the books I would normally read but I’m not sure I’d revisit it.
The book was originally written in another language (Spanish?) and then translated to English. The story is obscure and dark. Most people are aware of the story of Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley’s trip from which the story of Frankenstein was born. This book is a retelling of that tale which includes the story of John Polidori, who is attributed to writing “The Vampyre”.
✍️ John finds himself in contact with an intriguing character who wants to share her story with him and will help him write the greatest story of all time, the vampyre. John, of course, eagerly agrees, but with everything, nothing in this world is free.
🗣 I often think it’s useful to see an extract of a book to get an idea of the writing style. Here is a brief extract so that you can see a sample of the writing yourself:
👫 This book has everything you would want in a gothic horror; a dark re-telling, an isolated location, secret candlelight stories and a creature of the night.
💔 Any Negatives: This book is excessively erotic at times, often drifting into the more vulgar aspects.
💭 Overall View: Another reviewer wrote, reading this was like having a psychedelic dream and I feel that is probably one of the most accurate interpretations of this book. It is smart, dark and daring, yet sometimes too bizarre for my tastes.

Valoda ir gana tēlaina un autors diezgan reāli spēj uzburt laiku, kurā noris darbība.
Īsti neatceros kā grāmata pie manis nonāca, bet, iespējams, tas bija laikā, kad lasīju “Zvēru kapiņus” un pāris Keitas Mosas vēsturiskos detektīvus, bet šī grāmata tā arī bija palikusi neizlasīta un pirms spriežu tās tiesu palikt plauktā vai aiziet - tā bija jāizlasa jo #dodgramataiiespeju un turklāt tā kā @zoom_lappuses janvāra tēma ir Dienvidamerika, tādēļ šī bija lieliska iespēja grāmatu lasīt tagad.
Iespējams, laikā, kad grāmatu iegādājos, man tā būtu patikusi vairāk, bet šodien drīzāk teiktu, ka neesmu grāmatas mērķauditorija, bet ja tu esi šausmu stāstu piekritējs un tevi nemulsina neliela erotikas deva - tev varētu patikt.

Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, John Polidori, Mary y Claire se reúnen en la famosa Villa Diodati en Genève, en un verano particular.
A través de una narrativa casi totalmente epistolar, se nos presenta una novela gótica de tintes eróticos y, al mismo tiempo, repugnantes, en un intento por recrear lo que pudo haber pasado durante ese conocido periodo que dio fruto a clásicos de la literatura.
Un tératome que nació y creció y que está ligado a sus otras 2 bellas hermanas. Este monstruo carece de cualquier belleza física, sin embargo, posee un especial talento: la escritura. Ello le servirá para negociar el elixir de la vida en intercambio por el manuscrito de "El Vampiro" de Polidori.
-"John Polidori caressa les feuilles où était transcrit le début du récit, se renversa sur la chaise et posa les jambes sur le bureau. S’abandonnant à une douce léthargie, il laissa la fumée descendre lentement dans sa gorge, au rythme de son souffle. Il aspirait les esprits magiques qui, au passage, endormaient la matière souffrance et vile. Puis il exhalait la fumée bleutée, se débarrassant en même temps, comme par un exorcisme intime, des horribles démons de la quotidienneté. Il serra les feuillets contre lui."

Me ha encantado el libro.
Está brillantemente escrito, es uno de esos libros que bebes y aún así quieres más. Si no le pongo las cinco estrellas es por ciertas escenas que a mí se me hicieron demasiado cuesta arriba en cuanto a desagradables, pero creo también que es el punto de la historia.
Me encanta la historia de la Villa Diodati y las personas que se reunieron allí (Lord Byron, Percy B. Shelley, Mary Shelley y John Polidori) en el año sin verano, en el que en una noche tormentosa decidieron retarse a escribir historias de terror. Allí nació "Frankenstein" y también "El vampiro". Esta última fue la plantilla de los vampiros tal y como los conocemos ahora y creo que no se le da el crédito suficiente a Polidori por lo que creó, así que me ha encantado ver una novela corta con él de protagonista.
El punto fuerte de este libro es, sin duda, su prosa: es bellísima, poética, te envuelve con pocas pinceladas. Y ese final...
Me ha gustado mucho, lo recomiendo un montón.
