*Beautiful* prose! Brilliant dialogue. Laugh-out-loud lines. Competent writing. It's so hard to find all this, or any of this, in the vast expanse of fiction for sale, but this little novel shines diamond-bright in a sky full of dim stars. From the first page, I was hooked. A writer who dares to mention quantum physics and Schopenhauer's cat which might be simultaneously dead and alive? Where did Barbara J. Taylor come from--and why is she giving away a book that is thousands of facets better and brighter than the legions of $5 ebooks? Line after line of piercing insights into the world of a mother grieving the loss of her son, never dull, never self indulgent, and often...funny? Laugh out loud funny! A novel about such intense mourning! "The Scientific Method" is one pleasant surprise after another, in spite of all the anguish. Anyone who's ever lost a loved one will marvel at how exactly this author captures it. Just when I thought the heroine would finally die of grief, the clouds parted. A ray of hope lifts this story from paralyzing pain into the possibility of moving forward. Without quoting every page of this novel, I can't show how moving and eloquent it is. I can only hope others will take my word for it and join me in singing the praises of the best novel I've seen in a long, long time. Joyce Carol Oates has serious competition.
