Dr. David Thompson is on call. First came the call of God to medical missions; then a phone call announced the brutal murder of David's parents at the hands of the Viet Cong. Later another call carried the determined missionary kid through medical school. Today, David Thompson responds to the persistent calls of the sick and dying at the Bongolo Mission Hospital in Gabon, West Africa.

Dr. Thompson recounts the undeniable call of God on his life with moving stories both of his personal faith story and in a middle of nowhere village "hospital" in Gabon. He does so with humor, humility, and honesty. Following Jesus is costly, and Thompson is an example to all Christians to use the talents he has given them for the glory of Christ. This left me in tears on several occasions. "If you love me, you will obey my commands," said Jesus. We are all on call.
Dr. David Thompson lived an incredible life in the jungles of Africa. It’s incredible what our CREATOR can do through us when we’re willing to serve HIM even in a land that’s spiritually hostile and dark. May those of us who follow our LORD and KING JESUS CHRIST always be ready to battle the forces of satan and bring the Good News to those around us.
Short real-time stories from a Christian & Missionary Alliance doctor in Gabon. Real spiritual warfare, healing miracles, and humorous stories of donkeys and outhouses that take place at Bongolo Evangelical Hospital. The humility of the doctor makes this book relatable, despite the differences between or cultures.
Immediately after I made some opinionated statements about the sadly few well-written biographies or autobiographies, I read this one. He's a wonderful story-teller and clearly communicates the essences of foreign medical mission life. If I was a junior high teacher, I would use it for storytime.
Decent book. Some encouraging stories of God's working, but it would have benefited from a bit more polish in style. Also needed a better editor as there were quite a few typos.
Autobiography. Author was a missionary kid in South Vietnam. After becoming a doctor in the US he and his wife and children went to Gabon and established a hospital and training program. Great stories that show God's work.
A read aloud to my kids. This was a remarkable story of a doctor serving at the Bongolo Missionary Hospital in Gabon, West Africa. Not all stories have happy endings, but that opened up a lot of good conversations and opportunities for the kids to ask questions about God's plans. Recommended.
