Joseph Samuel Nye Jr. was an American political scientist. He and Robert Keohane co-founded the international relations theory of neoliberalism, which they developed in their 1977 book Power and Interdependence. Together with Keohane, he developed the concepts of asymmetrical and complex interdependence. They also explored transnational relations and world politics in an edited volume in the 1970s. More recently, he pioneered the theory of soft power. His notion of "smart power" ("the ability to combine hard and soft power into a successful strategy") became popular with the use of this phrase by members of the Clinton Administration and the Obama Administration. These theories from Nye are very commonly seen in courses across the U.S., such as I.B. D.P. Global Politics.
Nye was the Dean of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he later held the position of University Distinguished Service Professor, Emeritus. In October 2014, Secretary of State John Kerry appointed Nye to the Foreign Affairs Policy Board. He was also a member of the Defense Policy Board. He was a Harvard faculty member since 1964. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, a foreign fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy.
The 2011 Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) survey of over 1,700 international relations scholars ranked Nye as the sixth most influential scholar in the field of international relations in the past 20 years. He was also ranked as one of the most influential figures in American foreign policy. In 2011, Foreign Policy magazine included him on its list of top global thinkers. In September 2014, Foreign Policy reported that international relations scholars and policymakers ranked Nye as one of the field's most influential scholars.

The brilliant scholar Joseph Nye coined the powers of the world from the age practice or used by the different rulers in the different parts of the world, soft power, hard power, and smart power are categorically differentiates the national rule of the law and the global standardization. Globalization, internationalization, and digitalization are been activated and accelerating by both local and global foreign policies reciprocal with economic, trade, security, health, and education sub-policies. The country's competitions are relying on those elements to showcase them as superpower countries. In the democratic point of view, superpower does not mean the dominance of neighbors or others.

In this book, the author viewed three countries in East Asian power balances of heard and soft and position of strength in economic, social, and military containment. As the author discussed “the human behavior and conflicts can be misleading wars organized violence perpetrated by groups" this can be changeable by enforcing new laws in any counties but no counties willing to do that excepted very few countries, therefore the illegal armament activities prevailing with the support of elite governments.

Changing context, the author narrated about the realism based on war and international trade policies between the US and other countries in different leaderships and administrations by Nixon, Carter, and Reagan policy focused on multilateral systems. Changing behavior is a successive part of liberalism for international relations.

The author's viewpoint of the art of handling soft power makes more positive energy in favor of international commitments example is the study of world war II. Soft power shifts power for major changes in a difficult environment to face new challenges in the context of leveraging over the system as a whole.

My interesting chapter out of the whole reading “Information Revolution” that the author seriously concerned about the technological change in the late 18th century. Social institutions rapid change, industrial revaluation, computer usage, information transmission is increased in the US economy in mid-1990. The author’s sharp notification in the mass communication and broadcasting facilitated for today’s political matters and moreover, I would like to suggest the extended version of today’s social media much more effective than earlier broadcast, but the bureaucratism dominate and ruling those media, therefor the media freedom is restricted.

In my conclusion, I would like to submit my view in globalization that handle the whole systems, smart power effectively monitors and handles the global activities by enhancing the technological volume, universal educational policy, universal health care, universal wage system, integrated global security policies, global climate change consortium, and global trade and economic policies are maintain the world’s equality at a decent level.

The book is a collection of paper about interesting topics in foreign affairs. Nye chooses state of the art research papers that discuss the evolution of state versus the evolution of foreign relations mainly the evolution of ethics in the world of anarchy when it comes to states. The author also presents papers discussing the effect of globalization on world affairs and on intergovernmental relations. The most interesting topic is the discussion about the weak role of trans-governmental institutions and the push-pull between governments and these institutions for domination. Highly recommended read...

It took me a moment to get into it, and I think it started with the wrong essay because several in the middle were much more compelling and relevant. But still, I’ve never read an international relations book before and I did enjoy a surprising amount. The essay on ethics was particularly good!!
