This is an extraordinary book, from structure, content presentation, to analysis and conclusion. Von Sponeck does an impeccable job in showing the ineffectiveness of the oil for food programme, and offers a very well rounded and sound analysis of what aspect of the programme and the relationship between the involved parties were ineffective and how.
This was very informative and engaging, it did however drag in the first chapter about the oil-for-food program and it was kind of annoying that the author was so shocked constantly about the hypocritical , aggressive and deadly policy the west perpetuates on the global south , which is crazy to me , since up until point in time , there had be 50 years of violations of international law by the west.
Reading this in 2025 makes me thing about two things. 1 . The U.S. and the west and their “liberal democracy” values are nothing more but a mere facade. This shows that these “neutral” institutions are also just extensions of Washington and tow the party line. But , reading this in 2025 has also made me see how weak the U.S. and the west has become. Russia is solidifying its victory in Ukraine (I.e. the U.S.) everyday. Iran won the first round of the 12 Day war and the second round that is coming up quickly should be no different since its principal partners (China , Russia , DPRK ) aka CRINK are racing to arm them to the teeth. The days of unilateral actions without consequences are long gone
