One of my favorites. 3 books in 1 and I flew threw all of them! Love the Servants of Twilight - terrified me and had a big impact me at the time. The characters were literally in psychological warfare as well as physically running for their lives. Finished for the 2nd time about a year ago, and with age I realize my perceptions have changed over the last 20 years. It was a great process. Still think this one phenomenal book!
Phantoms is also one amazing read and vividly remember being scared to death and need to revisit this one as well.

The servants of twilight, such an enticingly thrilling read. Once I had started, I felt it was impossible to set my book down. A psychotic elder lady who is the leader of a cult, I mean “church” sets her eyes on young six-year old Joey and claims he is the antichrist. Then the mad hunt for Joey ensues, this cult literally stops at nothing to try and kill this poor boy. But his mother Christine is well equipped with a detective of some sorts Charlie and his team. There was so much blood shed and “book gripping fear”, which does ultimately end in “sunshine” believe it or not. In the end I was left with more questions than answers, which made the read so good. Seriously, is Joey actually “good”? Is the “devil” really that bad? Who is “God” anyhow? I guess you will have to read for yourself to find out.

Darkfall, an eerie read full of voodoo, homicides, and being chased through a blizzard by goblin like demonic creatures. Definitely a good and satisfying read to keep you up at night, truly a tale from nightmares. Only slightly dissatisfied with how easy it was for Jack to close the “gates of hell”, literally all it took was a jar of holy water and a little blood from a righteous man. All that trouble and chase just to be ended so quickly and abruptly at the very end. In all honesty, I’m still left wondering. Is that it? What’s next? I feel books that end on this note qualify as an entertaining and good read.

Phantoms, packed full of horror all the way through. This read is definitely what nightmares are made of. All I can say, ALOT goes on during this read. Literally the whole town of snowfield is whipped out, disappeared or well murdered. It is a harrowing journey to find out what “it” is that is killing everyone off so easily, and how it can be defeated. Only a few characters make it out alive in the end, the gruesome deaths of others is very descriptive. This read might not be for everyone, but if your looking for a good chill or nightmare this is the book for you!

All three novels are excellent. Although in some ways I like Phantoms the best, Darkfall is more "edge of my seat" tension. Phantoms was scarier before "supernatural" became "physical".

I will review these books as I read them since this is 3 stories in 1 book. 1st book I read is called Darkfall and omg it was creepy as hell! Here are my reviews.

Darkfall (11/21/2023-11/26/2023)

Darkfall has a couple of MC's. Jack is a detective, and his partner is Rebecca. Penny and Davey are Jacks kids, and they are very young: 11 and 8 years old I believe. Then there is the Bocor of voodoo who is evil AF and his name is Bab Lavella. There is a huge snow blizzard storm happening and a lot of murders as well. Jack and his partner are trying to find a murderer, but the murders seem very strange. The coroners believe the people were attacked by animals, but they have never seen any type of animal that could do what these attacks look like, and the bites are so tiny that they seem to be from something the size of a large rat only not a rat. Plus, the only people who are attacked are people from the Mafia Drug trade family called the Carramazzas. So, Jack and Rebecca have their work cut out for them because they will need to figure out what is going on in this city with these strange murders and try to survive the horrors of the night during a huge blizzard. They also have to try to protect his children from the creatures that stalk the night! Definitely going to be a hell of a scary journey for them!
This story deals with the horrors of bad Voodoo and everything. It is so creepy at times that I had to take a break and check under the bed and in my vents lol. Such a good horror story. I absolutely love Dean Koontz books. He is an amazing author and I hope he continues to make more horror stories!

The Servants of Twilight (11/26/2023-12/1/2023)

I loved this story. It was intense and kept me biting my nails! I was so entranced with it and I didn't want it to end.
The MCs include a private investigator named Charlie and the 2 people he is protecting which include a mother and 6-year-old son- Christine and Joey.
There are a few different perspectives that we get to read about as well. One is this Mother Grace and her follower Kyle Barlowe. Anyways she is a fanatic who thinks the antichrist is on earth and she has to kill him. She believes God gives her visions and everything and she has a ton of followers in her church of Twilight.
Her and her followers are going after Christine and her son Joey and so Christine hires Charlie Harrison as protector. Charlie has many men on his team so they get round the clock protection but in the end, Charlie believes he is the only one who can really protect them, and he doesn't want any more of his men to die. The Twilighters keep finding them everywhere they go, and they just don't understand how Mother Grace is able to find them so quickly each time they hide somewhere. They start to get paranoid and decide not to trust anyone at all except each other. Christine and Charlie start to develop feelings for one another the longer they are on the run together and getting to know one another.
This book has so much intense nail-biting action and horror. There was so much running and hiding, being hunted and everything. There were car chases, stuff blowing up, gun fights, and etc. There seemed to be demons and everything when it came to mother grace. If they were real or not you will just have to read to find out. There was murder, mayhem, and much more in this story.

Phantoms (12/2/2023-12/7/2023)

I loved this book. I loved the movie as well! Dean Koontz is just absolutely amazing. He is a horror story king. I rank him right up there with Stephen King!
Phantoms is such a scary book. I could picture everything happening as if I was right there with the characters and omg there were times when I was so scared, I had to stop and take a break. Such intensity and heart stopping horror!
Dean Koontz really has a way with words and with his stories. His mind is so amazing and comes up with some of the scariest things.

if you haven't read any Dean Koontz novels then I would suggest that you definitely pick them up. You won't be disappointed. I haven't read a book by Koonts yet that disappointed me. I have enjoyed every one of them and I have even enjoyed being scared by them.

Three novels, 3 stories. All good thrillers, not exactly horror, in my opinion. Servants of twilight starts like a simple enough tale until it grabs you by the neck and shoots you in the knee before making any demands! In case you weren’t paying attention! I loved it, the pacing, the themes, the action sequences! Edge of your seat stuff.

The second one, Darkfall, presents an interesting take on the idea of good against evil. The character development in this one was slightly more nuanced than the preceding story, made evident by my sheer and visceral hatred of the main character! This was very well written. I wanted the main character to die so many times in the whole story. Of course you’re supposed to root for him, but the only character I was rooting for was the little girl, up until the third act where her character falls off in significance to make way for the others.

Which is probably my main gripe with this authors portrayal of young characters. They seem to possess a mature air to the way they think and view the situations and interactions until they run into a main character, like their mother in the first story and the father in the second. They seem to transfer thinking from one to the other, as opposed to one type of one intellect meeting another. The intellect in the room passes like a ball being thrown to whichever character requires it in the scene. It just comes off as off.

The third story Phantoms is the first sci-fi I’ve ever read. Not having branched towards those type of books. It’s technically a sci-fi horror. Well written, plotted and all the characters serve an independent significance without overburdening the story. The scientific elements of the story made the horror elements much more richer and engaging. The payoff is the best book of all three! And the best sci-fi I’ve read yet! Can’t really go into too much detail, that would take a significantly longer review than this, which is saying a lot!

The Servants of Twilight by Dean Koontz is about a young single mother trying to protect her son from members of a cult who believe that he is the antichrist.

The book straddles the line between the supernatural and just a thriller. We are left guessing if there is such a thing as the paranormal within the universe of this book, or if there is going to be a logical explanation.

Towards the end, the book chooses the paranormal. The father of the child is Luke Under - an obvious nod to Lucifer the fallen son of God. My problem is that the book doesn't commit to the paranormal and doesn't explore the idea through. If Koontz wanted the reader to be left guessing, the nods should have been more subtle. If not, the idea that Joey is the son of Satan and that the Satan is not that bad should have been explored more. There just too many untied ends.

I found the suspense to be lacking - the book was quite predictable. I also don't buy that the police didn't provide more protection and didn't take more action on the cult after a murder attempt and a few deaths.

Definitely pulp fiction.

3 very interesting stories, but definitely none of them favorites. The Servants of Twilight, I thought, was the most engaging of the three. The idea of being pursued by a crazy, cult-like leader had some relevance to what's happening today. Darkfall brought in a twist with voodoo as the evil force. It was also a fast paced and many times, harrowing story. Phantoms was my least favorite of the three. I just can't get my head around evil portrayed in some gelatinous form, even in Stephen King novels. So while I liked the suspense of the story, it seemed too drawn out with all the details of this evil 'thing'. I much prefer Koontz more current novels which give rise to seemingly darker parts of our government and of course, the chase of man vs man which he is a master at.

I really enjoy Dean Koontz. This was an older book and pretty tame compared to some of his others, but I liked it very much. I read the book "The Servants of Twilight" not the other two, couldn't find the title alone on Goodreads.

These are three of Dean Koontz's best works written earlier in his career. Phantoms is incredible, as is Servants of Twilight. There’s a richness and complexity to his characters and descriptions that are lacking in some of his later works.

Spooky, tense, all three a heart-pounding, gripping adult horror thriller with an underlying theme relating to the Devil. There was too much graphic violence, death, sex, and language for my taste, which accounts for the low score. I was afraid of the dark for a bit after reading these stories.

Koontz's writing is immensely realistic and intense; he puts you physically there in the middle of things. You, the reader, are really there, witnessing the action and the characters' terror, whether you like it or not. And because you can't put the book down, you're stuck there 'til the (gruesome?) end.

This book is composed of three novels: The Servants of Twilight, Darkfall, and Phantoms.

In the Servants of Twilight, a relentless, fanatic cult led by a psychotic physic, Grace Spivey, hunts down a young boy, Joey Spavello, whom they believe with all their driven faith is the Antichrist. And they will stop at nothing to end him before his reign can begin.

Single mother of Joey, Christine Spavello, seeks the succor of private detective Charlie Harrison, and the three are soon swept into a nightmare from which they cannot wake up until either Joey or Spivey is killed. Readers will be confronted with questions of who is really satanic in this novel, and whether Joey is simply an ordinary child. While the bullets fly and tears fall, a romance grows between Charlie and Christine, despite, or perhaps because of, the deadly race for sanctuary from their malevolent hunters.

This is the way to write intriguing stories. Each story is better than the preceding story. First Servants of Twilight leads you a trip with a group protecting the world from Satan’s son. Next we have Darkfall a story of a policeman, his partner, and his children’s flight from the gates of hell. Last but not least we have Phantoms. If you believe in God you must also believe there is a devil. The question is “Which one do you choose to serve?”

Phantoms will keep you up at night. history documents the Roanoke Island Colony; Eskimo Village of Anjikuni; The Mayan Population; The Spanish Soldiers of 1711; and The Chinese Battalions of 1939 disappearances, just to name a few. These are real disappearances. Could there be some truth to Phantoms?

This wasnt one of Koontz best books in my opinion but i still just couldnt put this book down. I was dying to know the truth behind the little boy (joey). Now that ive finished this book I was left questioning whether or not the boy was the antichrist or not. I think that was Koontz goal, to leave the reader wanting more. Im not sure if there is a second book or if this is a series. Great book though!!
I still believe Joey somehow could be the antichrist!! Everything happened too convienently for him his mother and Charlie :)

The first book (servants of twilight) wasn't really scary, but the last two were pretty scary until the reveal. I guess I never really thought about this, but once I knew what the scary thing was, I wasn't as scared. I guess that makes sense but I never actually put this in words.

I think the third book (phantoms) was scariest but probably only because the reveal took so long. I would also say this was probably my favorite of the three because of this but also maybe because of the scifi nature of the story.

The Servants of Twilight: This story I will give a 4 star rating. I enjoyed the book but I can tell it is an earlier work of Dean Koontz.

Darkfall took me a bit to read. I enjoyed this story but not as much as the third story.

Phantoms grabbed my attention quickly. I enjoyed the story, the suspense and the characters. I read through this story very quickly. I had a hard time putting the book down.

A fantastic Christmas present from my sister when I was a teenager. Phantoms was my favorite, but they were all good. Even though I thought I was all grown up and could handle it, I got freaked out reading this book. Very good, very scary! You may wish to leave the night light on while flipping the pages of this one!
