I love Jason Manford when he does stand up so I thought it would be interesting to find out more about him, this book was brilliant for that! You get to know him more and find out how he came to be in comedy and what his life was like growing up. Being a northener I was also 'Brung Up Proper' so I could connect with quite a few things that he discussed about his life. His sense of humor came across brilliantly in his writting, I found myself laughing alot while reading it. Even though it is a average sized book I read it within a couple of days, it flowed so well throughout the time just flew by and it was very well written it was as if he was sat right in front of me telling me about his life.
Very good book. It was published in 2011 and there are no details of Manford's career or much of his life as an adult, unfortunately. We are overdue a new, updated book! Please?
The stories are interesting, including events from his poorer childhood. Turned out he lived in a bad area too, but there's certainly no complaining. I particularly enjoyed the tales of all the pets he had. A fun book.
Another great celebrity biography, I never tire of reading about celebrities lives, no matter how old the books are!
Jason gives us the run down of his early life and the beginning of his career in this laugh a minute book. It's not completely set out from start to finish of his life in order as there are sections throughout where he recalls memories from previous times and they don't always fit into the time he is referring to, which I think made it funnier! Plenty of tales in the book, often when reading comedian's autobiographies I never know if they are joking or not but in Jason's case I am really hoping the tales were all true as there were some hilarious stories!!
It's lovely to see how well Jason is doing now considering he doesn't come from a wealthy background, and it just goes to show that if you want to do something you can succeed. I love the fact that Peter Kay got him into college, that was just fab!
Very enjoyable even if now it is over 10 years old, shame he never did another one, I'd buy it! The amount of fame he has now and the people he must have seen and places he must have been, do another book Mr Manford!
Jason is a naturally funny guy and this is apparent in his book. Out of all the autobiographies I've read though; this is the least dark. What I mean is there is very little tragedy here. That's ok though. I'm not saying I'd want Jason to suffer just to make his book more entertaining, no, not at all. I'd like to think he has dealt with less tragedy than some and of the tragedy he has dealt with it's perfectly OK for him to keep to himself. What I did love about this memoir though is that it felt as though it was possibly the most honest one I've ever read. Sometimes the honesty is brutal but that's ok, I really do admire the honesty. He's a funny guy and he doesn't mind telling you how it is. What's not to love?!
A simple way to put this is that this was a pleasant read. Manford takes us on a little journey through the life of his younger life and insight on how he became the comedian we all know him as. There’s no real shocking stories on here and it’s not a tell all book but what it is is a book about family, about love, about heartbreak, about working shit jobs. Reading Manford’s stories I could trace back to my own experiences to some. Good read.
Audiobook- A great read. Nice to hear an autobiography that’s not all my life was shit blah blah blah. Jason gives an honest account of his life, he comes from a working class Manchester family. He was poor but happy, he lived in some rough areas and now he’s a celebrity he still remembers where he came from. He’s had knock backs along the way like all of us, he nearly gave up but was encouraged to go on. Funny read from start to finish with some serious bits in between.
Not gonna lie, I'm a LITTLE bit in love with Jason Manford at the mo and an insight into what made him who he is, was lovely. Not the laugh out loud nonsense I was expecting either but an actual look into growing up in a large working class family when times are hard. As an aside, if your reading this love, I have tickets booked for January so don't die or anything okay?
Really enjoyable, Brought back lots of memories for me, as we are a similar age and from a similar background, some great laugh out loud moments and some heartbreakingly sad ones too, but that's what life is for most of us really, isn't it?!
I was raised I Manchester like Jason was so it was very relatable which made it even funnier. It was packed full of laugh out loud moments from beginning to end! I read this book in around an hour it didn't get put down
Jason Manford is one of my favourite comedians and I have had this book for ages. I really enjoyed this honest, funny book. It definitely did not disappoint. His life has changed quite a bit since he wrote this so I think it’s about time he wrote a new one. Definitely recommend this book
After struggling through a thick and not wholly enjoyable thriller, I wanted something a bit lighter and quicker, and picked this one up (which I'd bought for the princely sum of half of one of our Pounds Sterling) to read as a consequence. I wasn't disappointed, but neither was I particularly excited.
Manford comes over in his writing like he does on TV panel shows and in stand-up. He's far from the wittiest or most innovative, but he's endearing and honest and I found him quite likeable. The opening chapters of this autobiography felt a little simplistic and a little heavy on the 'our family was so poor, we had to...' poverty schtick (which is unfair - if you're poor then you're poor - Manford never moans about it or waxes political) but the latter half of the book was heart-felt and decent and I found some pleasant resonance in being a similar age to him. Though not frequently hilarious, this is an amusing and pleasant book with some really good bits. Well worth 50p :-)
Jason Manford is a FANTASTIC comedian and if you like him then you will love his book!
I have read autobiographies of people I am a fan of and not been impressed, similarly I have read autobiographies of people who I have not really been a fan of and really enjoyed them. I dont think you have to be a fan of Jason Manford to enjoy this book
This book only reaches a certain point in his life and so much has happened since then so I hope that he will bring out a second book at some point and that it is just as enjoyable as the first
I give this book 5/5 - 100% - absolutely top marks
Jason Manford is a funny bloke. I enjoy his stand up, his Facebook posts, and now his autobiography.
I listened to the audiobook, read by Manford. His delivery certainly added so extra laughs. This isn't just a comedic romp though - he came from a poor family, although one filled with love, and has had his fair share of ups & downs. You realize he's 'just like you' and you love him all the more for it.
I am between 3 & 4 stars - I enjoyed it, but as a 30-something he's got a lot of life left to live so I can't quite go to 4!
