Gwynna had fallen from grace once, bearing a stillborn child out of wedlock. Determined to have a respectable future, she finds a position for herself as a nursemaid at Hungerton House. But just as she begins to find her feet, the secrets of her past are revealed. She is swiftly dismissed but not before she becomes the target of a lascivious groom. And even afterwards she is pursued by Hungerton, an evil old man who wishes to send her back to the gutters. She returns home to Hedderby, only to find the small Lancashire town reeling after the arson attack on the local pub and music hall, The Pride. Her only ally is a talented carpenter, also once employed by Hungerton. His former employer will stop at nothing, however, to bring him back to the estate. Will money buy revenge and destroy two lives, or will the young lovers find a way to achieve their dreams?
I was a bit disappointed with this book it was like being here before first there was Athol Stott evil man toward both his wife and his son's i was glad he got his comupence then next we had Hungerton so many nasties then yet another kidnap.I hope the next book is all happiness and no evil.
Lucas was a carpenter for Mr Hungerton but when he decided to leave his life was made a misery, also Gwynna looked aftewr Mr Hungerton's Grandchild but after finding out about her past she was fiorced to leave, but it didn't stop there will they ever find happiness. This was such a good book and I couldn't put it down.
Happiness, sadness ,kidnapping, death .it all happens for the Preston sister's and there friends this book has you gripped from the first page .5 STARS .
surprisingly loved it. Loved the itertwining story lines. Really loved the characters. And it was refreshing to read something that wasn't all about the "ton". I'm excited to read more by Anna Jacobs.
What a delightful story. So easy to read yet very captivating. This is my 1st Anna Jacobs book and I was not disappointed at all. A more upbeat version of Catherine Cookson in my opinion.
