This book is really weird. It's a cute idea, having a puppet mouth that becomes part of the animal featured on each page, but the mouth definitely works better on some animals than others. The mouth is especially weird on the goldfish and the frog. The rhythm/rhyme of the "boogie" is pretty cute and F (2) and L (5) like it, but it's not a favorite for me. The other issue is because of the puppet mouth it's hard to get this book to fit well on a standard bookshelf; a problem at my house because we have a ton of books.
This is a puppet book. A you read your hand becomes the mouth for each animal. The story starts with the clonkey bonkey donkey, and moves along the farm meeting animals. We end the story with a blue jeaned farmer who likes to do a scritchin and scratchin barnyard boogie.
teaching application- This book has wonderful sounds for the kids to practice. Setting up a puppet stage with farm animals would allow the kids to re-inact this story over and over. The fun rhymes are super practice also.
A clever concept (there's a puppet on the back cover and pages go through it) but it's kinda upsetting as a mouth for some of these critters... luckily this is at The Biere Library so I won't need to take it home.
This book is about different animals and the sounds they make. They all sing and dance. There is a mouth built into the book so that you can pretend the animals are singing and dancing. This is a cute book of dancing and singing animals with their own song.
This book is so much fun with the puppet. Of course the pages are hard to turn with one hand while your hand is in the puppet but it is so totally worth it. I loved the text that Jim Post wrote in this book in how they are sing song type. You could even sing them if you want to up the fun of this book. The illustrations in this book are amazing and really help sell this book. My four kids were giggling and giggling on every page of watching the animals do the barnyard boogie. My two year old loves to stick her hand in the puppet and try to read the book even still. This book should be put on your shelf for sure.
Who this book would be for: PreK-5 Reflection: This is a great book to read when introducing phonemic awareness, rhyming words, and animals sounds. The audience will be engaged in the book due to the puppet characters and fun rhyming text. If read enough, the audience will begin to participate and predict the text. Children could also help the teacher read the book by using their fine motor skills to move the mouth of the puppet.
A fellow librarian (thanks Mary) shared this one with me. I've never seen a puppet book before and since I had a "farm" themed storytime planned, it fit perfectly. While the text is a bit awkward the puppet is just adorable. I like it well enough that I put it on my Amazon wish list.
A great book to read to your class when you are teaching them rhyming words. So much fun to read aloud. This book describes sounds that animals make and has a interactive mouth.
