America's Polka King: The Real Story of Frankie Yankovic and His Music

Rate this book
“If you ever heard or saw Frank Yankovic perform, you have to read this book … Dolgan did a masterful job.” ― Polka Times The definitive biography of American music legend Frank Yankovic describes a life filled with triumphs, defeats, crises, and controversies. An uninhibited original, Yankovic earned his international reputation. For half a century he wowed polka fans around the globe with hits such as “Just Because” and “The Blue Skirt Waltz.” He sold millions of records, won the first Polka Grammy, and found fame and fortune beyond his wildest dreams. But behind the light-hearted sounds of the accordion stood a man obsessed. With a tumultuous touring schedule, a restless temper, disgruntled bandmates, and three failed marriages, Yankovic found himself struggling with dark emotions while playing the “happiest music on earth.” Yankovic could be lovable, mean, generous, and petty, but always brave and audacious. Above all, he was an entertainer. There may never be another like him. Includes a comprehensive discography.

My grandpa and I decided to try reading about Frankie Yankovic for our next book selection. After all, we both enjoy his music. The book was really interesting, and I was surprised to learn a lot of things about the man behind the music. The coolest part, though, was hearing the stories my grandpa had to share, including how my great-uncle knew Yankovic, or how he was at one of the polka masses referenced in the book, or even that he and my late-grandma won a polka contest together!

If you're interested in learning about Yankovic, then this is a great book to get you started. Really interesting and really well-written.

This book was a gift from my Cleveland cousin. I was interested because my Dad had a polka band started in Cleveland, then Az, CA and Ok and I grew up listening to Dad and his band and playing Yankovic music. The songs they talked about give me ,any great memories. It was interesting to read about the Cleveland polka scene of my parents generation. I guess like all the great musical geniuses, Frank had his quirks, but I think this book gave a pretty level and fair biography of his life.
