Though Elizabeth Hollow is the daughter of a wealthy knight, she was raised in poverty after her mother ran away before she was born. ‘For your protection,’ she would say, but Eliza’s mother had to sell her body to cruel men to provide for her daughter. After her death, Eliza made up her mind to become the lady she believes herself to be. She arranged for the local lord’s son to have an accident while out riding. But the men she hired were too severe. Instead of merely robbing Blaise Gray, they beat him and left him for dead.
Except fall in love.
For saving his life, Eliza is brought to live in Blaise’s castle where she fights her attraction to him, terrified of the pain she will feel should he discover it was her who nearly ended his life. Though Blaise cannot deny his heated lust for the beautiful peasant girl who saved his life, he also cannot halt his suspicion that she may have had something to do with his attack. It wouldn’t have been the first time someone from the lower class attempted to use him, yet he finds himself falling in love with her anyway. But the confirmation that she had nearly killed him to become a lady could be his undoing.
I am the middle of three children, not including three step brothers. I am not married, have no kids, and am hoping that this writing business pays off one day since I'm not qualified, motivated, or smart enough to do anything else.
The first romance novel I ever read came from a used bookstore in Fort Erie, and as there isn't a Chapters, Coles, or any other place other than Wal Mart or Zellers where you could get books new in that town, I wound up losing a lot of money there. I started off reading fantasy, and always enjoying the bits of romance that were found in those books the most. Then I discovered Surrender My Love by Johanna Lindsay.
I grew up wanting to write stories, but never doing it because I thought it was a stupid thing for me to attempt. I remember having empty journals in my room and wanting to fill them with characters and exciting situations, doing a few pages, but then stopping and thinking something along the lines of, 'No one would read it. You wouldn't fill the entire book or finish it anyway.' Still, I wrote a little after getting a crappy computer put in my room, and my first story was a fantasy. I never finished it, but it was a lot of fun.
At nineteen, I decided to stop messing around and started my second book.
Then I posted it on the Internet, barely edited, then put it up on Lulu for people to buy. Only family and a few friends got it, for which I am extremely grateful, even though my mom hands out her copy for some of her friends to read once in a while, which is a nightmare. The almost-not-edited version is still on the Internet for people to laugh at.
Sometimes I'm stunned that I even like writing at all. I used to hate grammar, always hated poetry (it's growing on me now) and in school we never read any of the classics. I started to read them after I got out of school, which sucks because they probably would have been easier for me to understand if there was an entire classroom of people to discuss the books with.
In November 2010, I got an acceptance email from Siren Publishing for my first novella. Here's hoping more will follow.
Ok, I was reading some of the other reviews and I think they are being harsh. People it is a book, a made up story. If you want complete accuracy of the time period, grab a history book. If you want complete correct spelling read a dictionary. This is to entertain and hopefully put a smile on your face for just a bit. You all take this too seriously.
That being said,
I usually don't read historicals but it was a free read and I am willing to give anything a chance. What I liked about this book was that started out right into to the story and kept a steady pace threw the whole book. The characters were likeable thought I did want to smack Blaise a time or two. And I did want to scream at Eliza to just tell the darn truth already. It was a cute story. And I am trying to decide if I want to get the first book which is the story of Marianne & William. I really like Marianne's character.
I’m not sure why this book has 500+ pages. It should have ended sooner. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t “I have to stop reading bad”… but I defiantly had to force myself to finish. I felt like I was watching a B grade movie. OK script, flimsy actors so flimsy lines but the rental cost only $1 so I’d finish it.
Eliza believes she doesn’t deserve to be poor since, according to her late mother (a prostitute), her father is a Lord. So, to get into the local Lords good graces she pays some hoodlums to rob Blaise Gray, local Lords eldest son, so she can save him & get into their good graces & find her father. They're both kinda annoying at the beginning; & their bad personalities/behavior toward each other drags a bit THEN POOF suddenly they LOVE each other. And she dwells on her secret way too long.
probably won't read any of the other books in this series.
Hey Rizzo--do you feel like a defective typewriter? You should because you not only skipped a period or two but you left out correct spelling, readable grammar, proper word usage and in one or two cases, actual words. Identical is not spelled "identicle." One may bear a mark on one's body. One can also bare the mark on the body to another's eyes. One does NOT bare a mark on the body. Further, it's sort of an insult to include a description of yourself as someone who "sometimes has to force herself to sit in her chair to write because, for the most part, she is too lazy to write an outline before sitting down at her computer." It shows and it makes me less charitable in my reading. If I thought this were a learning curve, some mistakes would be understandable. To find it's because of laziness...that just makes me resentful.
Dear Smashwords, editors are essential to quality products. Should you ever want to produce a quality novel, hire some editors to catch the above mistakes. It makes your literate readers very happy and more willing to overlook more obvious plot failings. This novel actually held the hallmarks of what could have been a decent novel. A heroine with a secret, a hero with a grudge and lots of secondary characters that could have impeded/impelled the plot. Editors could have helped with that.
Hello. My name is Vivian and I am addicted to reading really shitty books. I accept that I am powerless against this addiction, and thus, will lose many hours of my life and some day my sanity reading novels that are a crime against the written language and literary convention.
Deffs a good read if you're in the mood for a romantic tale that will make you smile. Lady Deception was a simple romance between two unsuspecting individuals thay captured my attention from the very beginning(:
I enjoyed the story. It holds the reader's interest all the way through. The characters are well liked and the storyline could have been true. The book takes place in Englamdr
Okay I enjoyed the story but to be honest both of the characters were really unlikeable. Eliza while draws sympathy to her cause can't cover up her whenever it suits her sense of right and wrong which she uses to justify her childish and criminal actions. Blaise is just as bad as she is the way he treats women is just wow. To be honest the sex was not that good justify being treated that way no matter how mad a person is. He is spoiled and comes with a host of issues that he blames on everyone but himself. The thing is as much as you find yourself not liking these two you end up wanting them to get it together in the end. To be honest I liked the father and his wife much better and their story seemed much more interesting so maybe I'll see if that book is already out or not. But it's worth reading it's okay for a cute quick read.
I have been debating for about half an hour about how I feel about this piece of fiction.
In the end I decided that I couldn't really warrant more than 3 star rating for it.
For me, the characters lacked depth, the pace was slow and there was a lack of content to the piece as a whole. It left me feeling decidedly underwhelmed in a way, as if the author had failed to engender any kind of emotion into the piece ... almost like it had been written as a casual observer rather with any real feeling being achieved.
I've popped it in my One Off Reads folder, but would like to reading something else by Ms Rosk to see if this was a one off baddie, and I could gel with more of her work.
In case I didn’t mention this was a Free Kindle Download at the time (see my blog www.toodlesbookclub.blogspot.com for daily selections of free downloads).
DNF. Eliza contracts with criminals to beat up a Lord so she can trap him into marriage and then is surprised that they took things too far. It only goes downhill from there. Eliza is self-centered with a sense of entitlement that makes her obnoxious and dangerous. Even though her mother was a prostitute and they had an extremely hard life, she is so naive it's ridiculous. And her careless disregard for anyone else's well-being is appalling. I got about 53% done (on my Kindle) and had way too many frustrating moments where I wanted to throw the book against the wall that I just finally had to give it up.
And the author's complete disregard for the practices, culture, and norms of the time period was unforgiveable. Why bother setting the story in a certain time period if you then completely ignore everything about the era? I just wanted to scream.
Insta-love and "catching her breath at the sight of him" at 11%. I thought I was reading a YA novel for a minute there.
Also, is Elizabeth not the most awful and selfish little girl-child ever? My goodness, lady, get over yourself. You're not owed anything because someone is a Lord, and to have him robbed? Geez, what a little cock gobbling bitch.
Constantly referring to the male love interest's "orange" hair as "hideous" (like 3 times in the first 14% of the book) does NOT help us understand why Elizabeth is suddenly attracted to him. Also, "orange"? Really? How about red, firey, golden, like the sun, etc. I'm personally not into redheads. Sorry, I just find them unattractive. BUT, a lot of people like redheads (or ARE redheads), and to call their hair "hideous" is just really rude.
For a first book of this author this was not a bad story. The Author even said that this was the first time she had ever written a book. She lives and learns and does better with help from different places. From what I can find online she has greatly improved.
As for me and if I would take the undertaking of writing books, she did much better then I would.
For the review:
I found the book to be interesting, a slow start but by the middle I enjoyed the read. I did not have trouble putting the book down to get things done. It was long when I felt it could have been shorter and got the same effect. But with the being a first book for the author I give her a high 5. It was a good book.
I liked this book, I of course got mad at the main characters, and some of the situations were unbelievable... but hey, its fiction! I liked the struggle of the "you can have secrets" but then when he found out she actually HAD secrets and they involved HIM he went crazy... and eventually devolved to a shell... So many ppl are like that... "oh, you don't have to tell me that.... What, you mean you really aren't going to tell me????" lol It was a nice weekend read and it leaves a great opening for more books in this series... I hope there will be more soon!
I really liked this book. The story had layers of deception, plenty of bad guys and asked a lot of great questions. There were some sections that dragged, but Rizzo Rosko is writer to watch and I'm looking forward to reading more of Rosko's books. My favorite scenes were the family quarrels and the moments of clarity where one character broke free of all the assumptions holding him/her back and did things his/her way. Expect the unexpected!
This was sweet! I think that Blaise's development as a character was wonderful. Eliza, on the other hand, went from not being able to stand him to 'oh yes I'll marry you'. But then again, for that time period, I guess that was every woman. ;)
This was a very pleasant book to read. I wont spoil it, but as far as 'trickery' and 'not outright lying', it's definitely passed on from father to daughter! Ha!
This book was ok. It had an interesting authenticity with the old tyme speech and a good plot line. I found the reactions of the characters and the thought processes of the characters a little tedious. They didn't seem to be realistic. The status of the female lead being based on her opinion of her status was inaccurate to say the least. The all-encompassing acceptance from the noble class was unbelievable.
Eliza is the daughter of a rich knight, but she was raised in poverty after her mother ran away, when she was born, for her protection, she would say, Eliza's mother had to sell her body to cruel men to provide for her daugther.
After her mother death, Eliza decided to lived that life, by planning an accident for a local lord's son that turn real bad.
I liked this book, it had a lot of passion, action and the characters was well thought out for this story.
I think the ONLY thing I liked about this book was the fact that I did not have to pay for it. It was a free Amazon read. I hated the characters, the story, the plot, and I just never could get into the book. It was a waste of 4 hours of reading for me. My momma always taught me when I start something I have to finished so I did. The ONLY thing I can say is that it was my connection with the story and characters and had NOTHING to do with the author's writing!
“An unnatural hurt presented itself inside of her chest, eating and biting at her like fleas.” Excerpt From: Rosko, Rizzo. “Lady Deception.” Rizzo Rosko.
Fleas? Really? As if I didn't think this was poorly written before, this sealed it. AND it was very predeticable without any character development. If you are looking for a quick read where the main character is a "poor me" weak minded women that has a unrealistic all is better and life is good ending, this could be for you.
This book had a lot of potential. It seemed this book needed to be edited. There were typos along with grammatical mistakes. I did enjoy the plot and the story but with the lack of editing it was hard for me to read at times and I found myself rereading paragraphes just to be sure if I understood what was trying to be said.
Engaging. A fun romance of medieval England (1300). This has a sequel, Lady Thief, though they can be read independently. Needs better copy editing, but doesn't interfere too often. I enjoyed it and would read another book by this author.
It was okay. Started out slow, picked up but then ended too quickly. Glad it was free but to read any more I would have to pay......not willing to do that. Note: if giving a book out free is to entice us to buy others, then make it enticing!
I disliked the characters so much that I didn't care enough about them to bother finishing the book. I can't remember the last time I didn't finish a book. The constant, neverending references to what happened in the past with the father and stepmother were distracting.
For the entertainment factor & the fact that this was an easy read I rated it 4 stars. I kept my interest most of the way through the book. So if you are into this type of romance books then I recommend it. If you don't like historical romance then pass on this book.
This is definitely an amazing read! It has an actual story line and is not your usual romance novel. I really enjoyed reading in that 14th century way of talking too!
it was a freebie, not very exciting, language was strange and quite a few errors in spelling and grammar. Held out hope until the end, but it was disappointing.
I adored this book! The story developed well, and Blaise was such a lovable ass......he was about the first truly realistic male lead I have ever read about!
