Viruses describes the structure, function, and evolution of viruses with an emphasis on their dual role as infectious microorganisms and important members of Earth's biosphere. Coverage includes the origin of viruses, viral structure and behavior, viral taxonomy, and the history of virology. This comprehensive new resource also examines marine virology, the use of viruses in biomedical research, viral diseases, and modern methods for fighting viral infections. Viruses devotes an entire chapter to viral pandemics, a topic that the general public has recently become interested in as health agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), release annual bulletins regarding the threat of possibly deadly viral strains. The final chapter provides background material on cell biology, biotechnology, methods in virology, and other relevant topics.
This was helpful to me as I learned a lot but it had some major typo errors which were confusing, like late in the book "receptor-mediated endocytosis" was written "receptor-medicated". Such a blatant error would easily be very confusing to a student who had not yet fully grasped that "receptor-mediated" and not "medicated" endocytosis is a cell process and in fact YA is the audience this book was intended for. Then again I purchased this from the library 2nd chapter store as it was being cleared out from the YA shelves so maybe the library staff caught the same problems I noticed and were upgrading their catalogue. I still learned a lot and as a Microbiology nerd I have to give this 3 stars as I really did like it.
