I stayed up all last night reading this book, only to do a little research and discover there was no Happy Hustler, it was a big hoax by Warner Books. “Grant Tracy Saxon” was played by an actor named Michael Kearns. He appeared on the cover of The Happy Hustler and on Donahue. It was all a “parody” of Xaviera Hollander’s book The Happy Hooker. I don’t know why Warner thought this was a good idea, because it made me really mad when I found out. But evidently it was, if The Happy Hustler (which I have yet to read) actually sold three million copies. I guess a gender-flipped version of something really popular is something of a sure bet.
That book and this one were actually written by Thom Racina (who may or may not have been Michael Kearns’s lover). The advice seems solid enough. It has a very warm, positive tone. The anecdotes are wild, and I guess I’m relieved that they’re made up, even though they weren’t told boastfully, exactly.
Michael Kearns later regretted the whole thing. I sure felt duped.
