A small town’s deadly past is exposed in the newest installment of the suspenseful National Forest K-9 series by Kathleen Donnelly.

Josh is ready to go all in, but Maya has one foot out the door. As she lets her guard down, she needs to accept that she’s falling deeply in love with him, no matter how risky it may be.

When evidence from the Antler Valley victims links the murders to deaths in other ski towns, secrets long buried are unearthed. Maya and Juniper must run toward an answer, though finding it might lead them directly into a fatal trap…

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the third book in the National Forest K-9 series. I have read the first two books in this series before picking up this book, but I do think you can read this book as a standalone. I loved the characters in this book. I loved the action and the suspense in this book, but the drama that was going on in the background was a little bit too much. I enjoyed reading this book. I re-read this book by listening to the audiobook, and I really enjoyed the audiobook for this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

I’m really enjoying this series! Then again, I LOVE doggie duo teams, whether they be law enforcement duos or search and rescue duos, LOVE them all. This is a good series about a really good search and rescue partnership. Maya is a former Marine, struggling with PTSD while maintaining her new sobriety (6mon). Juniper is absolutely wonderful, and the quintessential “Maligator” and a bit of a scoundrel in the most amusing and adorable ways.

The rest of the gang is back with Grampa, the local Sheriff of Pinecone Junction, who is on mandatory leave pending the results of an investigation of his actions in the last installment. There is also Maya’s love interest, Deputy Josh, who is as adorable as ever. There is also a neighboring Sheriff, Logan Jackson, that Maya has to work with on a case, who is an absolute jerk! From the get-go, my armchair detective persona immediately pegged Jackson as suspicious. There is also Forest Services Investigator, Ben Easton, who Maya is working with on the case. Jackson and Easton butt heads from the get-go over jurisdiction.

The book summary lays out the primary storyline of tracking a killer who is dumping bodies in the snow in the remote areas of the mountain (where there are no ski trails or chairs to). The mountain is considered Forest Services territory but they have to share jurisdiction with the local Sheriff’s office in Antler Valley. It’s revealed really early that the killer is watching the operation of removing a dead body from the mountain when it was discovered after a recent avalanche. Maya and Juniper are also working with a local search and rescue team, Tanner Drake and his K9, Finn, that was brought in by Sheriff Jackson.

There is a secondary storyline of Maya’s and Josh’s relationship and whether or not Maya wants to take it any further, which is hilarious since they are both hopelessly in love with each other and now living together. This particular storyline becomes complicated when Josh’s family shows up and who were not aware of Josh and Maya living together and don’t approve of Maya. Drama ensues!!! There is also another storyline, that is kind of a carryover from the previous installment, and that is that Maya is now wanting to find out who her biological father is. Nobody seems to know, except Abigail, who Maya captured in the last installment and who is now in prison and sending Maya letters. None of this is a spoiler since it was revealed really early in the story.

Most of the story revolves around the investigation and flips back and forth between Maya who is working the case in Antler Valley (2hrs from Pinecone Junction), the killer who is also in Antler Valley and Josh back in Pinecone Junction dealing with his really annoying and intrusive family. By the halfway point, there are several “obvious” suspects, however, the killer is just as likely to be someone who isn’t obvious or who hasn't even been introduced yet.

The fast-paced, action-packed ending was an intense and scary scene for the cast of characters, especially Maya whose fierce and totally bad@$$ goddess roared!!! LOVE MAYA!!! I want to thank NetGalley, Carina Press for sending me this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Hansley brothers are experienced snowboarders and carry equipment to protect themselves during an avalanche. The lure of fresh powder is irresistible in Pino Grande National Forest, Antler Valley, Colorado, but now Trey can’t believe he didn’t listen to Chase as his brother went first down the mountain, followed by an avalanche. However, when Trey finds Chase, it isn’t snow that is keeping Chase pinned down under the snow but a dead body. The local law enforcement team didn’t realize it was only the 1st body before Maya Thompson, a Forest Service officer, and her K-9 Juniper were called to help with the investigation.

A page-turning romantic suspense and mystery filled with twists, turns, and a pace that keeps adrenaline in high gear. Simultaneous to the investigation, there is personal drama and secrets that escalate the pressure of Maya’s PTSD, Josh’s sobriety, and Pop’s trial preparations.

One of the elements that I most appreciate about the author’s writing is the way K-9 training, law enforcement terminology, and, for this novel, terminology related to avalanches and winter storms are explained as an integral part of the storyline but do not feel like a forced training manual or vocabulary lesson. Reading on my Kindle, I can quickly look up terms in areas outside my knowledge base, but it’s always an interruption. The author’s writing allows me to learn while keeping me engaged in the storyline without delay or spoiling the suspenseful pace.

Reviewer's Note: The novel can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. Still, I highly recommend reading the series to fully appreciate the growth and development of relationship dynamics of the characters (e.g., grandfather/granddaughter, dog handler/canine, forest service officer/sheriff deputy). Each book ramps up the intensity of the relationships and the cases to be solved.
In my review of Book 1, I added this information –
"The novel includes material some readers might find difficult, including violence against women, drug and alcohol use, and discussion of suicide. I felt all subject matter was vital to the story and handled with care not to exploit or minimize. I was engrossed in Kathleen Donnelly's debut novel!"
If it is best for you to skip Book 1 due to the Trigger Warnings, I would like to recommend beginning this gripping series with Book 2, as I wouldn't want any reader to miss the series entirely.

Don’t miss adding this stand-alone or series (as per your preference) to your tbr list, especially for readers who enjoy Sandra Brown novels.

This is Kathleen Donnelly’s third thriller starring Maya Thompson, her beau Josh, and her K-9 hero Juniper. It is a doozy. In this one an avalanche reveals a serial killer’s dumping ground and it is up to Maya to find out who that person is. She is deeply in love with Josh, but his meddling mother has brought his old fiancée to visit and the fiancée is very twisted. If that weren’t enough, her father Pops has been criminally charged and that hangs over her head. Donnelly has tremendous knowledge of search dogs and educated me throughout the book. She also knows a lot about drugs and Narcan and their effects on people. I loved all the cliff hangers and the deep sympathy she had for her main characters. Both Maya and Josh are recovering drug addicts and she sensitively portrays the constant struggle to stay sober. The sympathy is just as deep for Juniper, who is not just a dog but part of her family. And the villain? I didn’t guess until the end. Boy is this one nasty. The ending had me gasping. I highly recommend her book—even if you aren’t a dog fan.

Choose your love

Finn and Juniper stole the show! Not really, but they are integral and I am so happy that Finn will be in future books. Maya and Josh hit a major roadblock of secrets, family and miscommunication. Their addictions and pasta come back to mess with them in this story as does their roles at work. The villain was not surprising, but very creative, and the connections to some of the legal components was surprising. Pops situation is not resolved and Josh’s family dynamic not any better. I loved the next step Maya and Josh agreed to and am excited for the next book!

Maya and her K-9, Juniper, are an amazing team and this time they are dealing with a serial killers burial site uncovered by an avalanche in Antler Valley, Colorado. Dangerous weather conditions as they search the area for multiple bodies. Meanwhile, miles away in her hometown of Pinecone Junction, her boyfriend, Josh, is dealing with a psycho ex girlfriend, who wants Maya out of the picture.
Mayas life is on the line in Antler Valley when the killer puts his sights on her and Juniper. With multiple officers involved in finding the killer, will it be enough to save Maya and Juniper?
So much fast moving excitement in here it was hard to set this book down.

Wow....just wow! This book is a very intense roller coaster ride of so many twists and turns!! The author does a fantastic job keeping you turning page after page with so many clues and twists and keeping the reader invested in this case. There were challenges in the relationship between Josh and Maya but it added to the overall suspense and mystery of how everything was going to work and play itself out. The focus primarily is on Maya and her solving this serial killer case but you get more glimpses into Josh's background and upbringing before coming to Pinecone Junction, Colorado. The book is more centered on solving the crime versus the romance so if you're looking for more romance theming, this book will not be for you BUT the writing and storyline of this book is truly awesome and highly recommend you give it a chance. Overall, the book is clean - a few profanity words mentioned but it is very minimal. There are several point of views - Maya, Josh, and the killer, which could be some triggers when you are reading from the killer's perspective. The details are not overly graphic as the author does leave some things to the imagination but some of the details one could find disturbing. I should note that what I did not know when I read the book before this one that this is actually part of an ongoing/continuing series. I would recommend reading Book 1 and Book 2 before reading this book (which you will not be disappointed in reading them). Although you can read this as a standalone as far as solving the main storyline of this book, I will say that the ending leaves a bit of a "cliffhanger"/setup for the next book or what I would assume there will be another book in the series as there is still more to earlier plots that need to fully conclude as well as on Josh and Maya's relationship. There are reoccurring hints at the previous book's plot that still have more to fully get closure - or at least I need it! All that to say.....this book was very well done!! I highly recommend reading the entire series up to this book and be ready for the *hopefully* next one!! Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin - Romance, Carina Press for the advanced copy of the book. All my thoughts and opinions are all my own.

Apparently I am in my K9 era (IYKYK) :)

NetGalley sent me another audio ARC and I realized that the last few audio books have also been from this same genre. Fun, right? This is another book that is making me break my longstanding odd personal rule about not starting a series in the middle of said series. It is a HUGE pet peeve of mine to read books out of order, but I guess I am going to do this again. This is the third book in this particular series, so we will see if it impacts my enjoyment - if I have missed too much in the series for it to make sense. (*Spoiler…it didn’t*)

This is another "new to me" author. It has really been a case of hit or miss with me in this genre but the books that I have liked, I have REALLY liked. It is just finding those good ones that have been challenging.

In this book, we are introduced to Forest Service officer Maya Thompson and her beautiful K-9, Juniper. At the time, they are working for the Forest Service in Antler Valley, Colorado. She is also living with her relatively new boyfriend Josh Colton who is a deputy with the Sheriff's department. (This relationship apparently began due to events with cases in the first couple of books)

Maya and Juniper are called to help law enforcement in a neighboring county when an avalanche uncovers several bodies that had buried in the wilderness. It doesn't take long for the various agencies to realize that there is a serial killer at work. Due to jurisdictional issues (federal land - Forest Service, outside the city limits- County Sheriff, serial killer-FBI, etc), so several agencies arrive on scene. There are also several secondary characters that we get to know who are involved in the investigation. Things escalate rapidly when all of a sudden the killer changes the MO and it becomes clear to Maya that the killer might just be one of them- someone from the law enforcement team.

Add in a completely crazy ex, an escalating while also devolving killer, a jerk of a Sheriff and a full blown blizzard and you have a very serious build up to the climax of the story.

I really did enjoy this book. Enough to be curious enough to go back and start with the first book and catch up with books 1 and 2. Well, at least to add them to my ever growing TBR list :)

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this audio ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone. This audio ARC will be out for publication on March 04, 2025.

I picked up "Killer Secrets" by Kathleen Donnelly, drawn by its unique setting in Antler Valley, Colorado, and the compelling role of its protagonist, Maya Thompson, a Forest Service officer. The authenticity brought by Donnelly's K-9 narcotics expertise enriches the narrative, especially in portraying the partnership between Maya and her K-9, Juniper.

However, certain aspects tempered my enjoyment. The dialogue initially felt cumbersome, disrupting the narrative flow. Moreover, while the plot's structure was solid, its predictability and the occasional profanity were drawbacks. The use of profanity, in particular, didn't seem to add to character development or the story's emotional depth. Instead, it appeared as a shortcut for expressing disdain or hostility, which could have been more effectively conveyed through actions or subtler dialogue.

"Killer Secrets" excels in depicting K-9 operations and the authenticity of the protagonist's occupation. Despite this, the narrative is affected by clunky dialogue and a storyline that unfolds without significant surprises. Yet, Donnelly's commitment to exploring the bond between Maya and Juniper and her passion for her characters make it a noteworthy read for those interested in crime fiction involving canine partnerships.

Antler Valley is usually a quiet ski town, but when avalanche unburies a serial killer’s secrets the deceased start to make a lot of noise. It is up to officer Thompson and her K9 Juniper (I am sure her boyfriend Colton a sheriff under Maya’s Grandfather) to solve these crimes before she is next in the crosshairs of a serial killer. But when a bad snow storm hits in the middle of all of this Maya is taken by the killer and she needs to escape but where into the storm?
So much suspense and action going on and throw a couple of K9’s in the mix what is there not to love. The author knows a lot about how K9s are trained and worked, which is so nice to be able to read. I enjoy these audio’s a lot. The voice actor is wonderful and makes you feel like you are there in that place. I had not read any of the others in the series but that was not an issue this was easily listened to by itself. I really did like this book and will be looking for more from this author.

In this book, the third in what I assume is a trilogy, but I wish was a longer series we get to see Connolly actually loosen up her writing style and become a much more relaxed writer in a good way. With that happening, we end up seeing Maya become more of an every day person giving herself the permission to let go of all if not some of her pain even though she will always be stubborn, difficult, hardheaded, determined woman. There’s an arc that has flowed through all three books and we finally get to a very satisfactory conclusion. You can feel the situations that Maya is in. Juniper is much more fun and you get what this dog wants and Connolly is so much more comfortable describing and creating this K9 for the reader. The love worked. The crazy ex was a little out of left field. I’d have liked a scene when the mom realize what a wackjob she was. The ‘bad guy’ was bad and predictable but it still worked. I was very happy with the conclusion.

Kathleen Donnelly's 3rd book of the National Forest K-9 series, Killer Secrets, is the best of the trio. Once again she brought her words to life in this action-packed suspense with just the right amount of romance. Definitely a page-turner and this trio of novels would make great movies or a mini-series.

National Forest Enforcement Officer Maya and her K9 partner, Jupiter, face avalanches, shady law enforcement officers, a serial killer (or are there two?), kidnapping, Colorado snow storms, and even a deranged ex-girlfriend of Josh's. Major themes of this book, like its predecessors, center around truth, trusting people, family, betrayals, PTSD, and trusting your instincts as well as your K9 partner.

I strongly recommend you read this series in order as the books truly meld together seamlessly. Hopefully, this series will continue with a book 4.

Another in the National Forest K-9 series, in which K-9 officer Maya Thompson discovers several bodies buried in the snow on a mountain slope, only to discover that they were killed by a serial killer using drugs and other means to incapacitate his victims. Who is the killer and why has he come to Antler Valley? Even more important, who should she trust when it becomes clear that the killer may have a law enforcement background, given how he seems to know how to lure her and the other police officers into danger?

Said danger becomes even more fraught when she realizes she may die before escaping and rescuing her K-9 partner from the man? Will her lover, Josh Colton be able to find her, even as he has been attacked with drugs and anger by his ex-fiance? Such a mess.

All seems a set-up for yet another addition to this series.

Heart stopping ending.

Another mystery with lots of twists and turns. I had hints to the bad guy, three choices, two out of three wasn't bad.
The relationship between Maya and Josh also had twists and turns. With both of them in unstable places in their lives it makes things that more interesting. Although, all of Josh's apologies were a bit much. Sounded needy. The story goes on with more adventures.
I do wonder why Juniper spends so much time in the car. Most K-9 dogs I read about are real partners and by their side. I see no reason she can't go into the police station with Maya. She may be rambunctious and high maintenance at times but she is also well trained. KD, give Juniper a chance.
Now, why wasn't this an unlimited, I thought that is what I ordered, not a sample tease.

Killer Secrets by Kathleen Donnelly is the 3rd book in her National Forest K-9 series. Can be read as a stand alone. Hayli Henderson did a great job with narrating this book. I could distinguish between character’s well. When an avalanche in Antler Valley uncovers bodies, Maya Thompson heads there with her K-9 Juniper to offer her help in finding clues that this serial killer might have left. The sheriff there doesn’t like outside help which seems strange and while trying to unravel this the killer seems to know how the k-9’s track and police protocol. Meanwhile back at home in Pinecone Junction her boyfriend Josh Colton is having his own troubles. I loved this and didn’t want to stop listening. Full of mystery, twists and turns this is a must read. Thank you to #NetGalley, #Harlequin Audio and the author for this Arc audio. This is my honest review.

Killer Secrets is written by Kathleen Donnelly. This is book three in the National Forest K9 series. I love that this series has such well written scenery. In this story we are in Antler Valley, Colorado. An avalanche has come down the mountain and it leaves behind a dumping ground for a serial killer. Maya is a former marine that has suffered with what she has been through - and her K9 partner Juniper are tasked with trying to catch the murderer.
The Forest Services t share jurisdiction with the local Sheriff’s office in Antler Valley, Maya's boyfriend, deputy Josh complicates some things.

Josh wants to jump with two feet in, and Maya still has some issues. I loved how this book wove together with the perfect blend of romance and suspense.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Another great book in this series!

This is the 3rd book in the series, and I enjoyed the way that Maya and Josh's relationship is growing. They are both more confident in their sobriety, their jobs and living together. Of course, just when things are going well is when it changes, and Maya is soon facing her own death, while Josh struggles with baggage from his past.

I love learning more about K-9 training and use in this series. Juniper is a great dog, still learning, but shows great potential. This was a quick read, clean, with a clever serial killer mystery. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys this type of book.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.

This book was very good . Maya and Josh were a new couple but both had struggled with addiction. She was a k9 handler for the forest department and Juniper was her very well trained dog. When two snow boarders set off an avalanche a body was discovered under one of them. Maya was called in to help find more bodies and then a cadaver dog was also called in. It was an intriguing case as the sherif did not want to help and it wasn’t until the last couple chapters that the killer was revealed. I had a suspicion but it could have been one of several people. A good story that I had trouble putting down

I got this book from Netgalley and am voluntarily writing a review

Maya loves her job and her dog and her boyfriend but now someone is killing the partiers in her federal forest

As a tree cop Maya’s job is to patrol and arrest those who seek to do crimes in the Federal Forrest. She hopes she can save more people than arrest but is well trained to do both.
Her newest job is trying to find the serial killer that has turned up after an avalanche brought the bodies to the surface.
The timing is terrible as she is in the middle of a crisis with the deputy sheriff she is engaged to.
Her trusty dog Juniper is a trained K-9 and helps her solve her cases.

This book is fantastic!!! Forrestry Service LEO, Maya, is happily living with her boyfriend Josh and enjoying her job and K9 partner, when her foundation seems to crumble. She learns that Josh has been keeping secrets at the same time they learn a serial killer is in the area.

Maya takes on the investigation, but is repeatedly thwarted, leaving her K9 as the only one she can trust. Before long, she's in the fight of her life.

I love the characters in this series. They're imperfect, but filled with heart. The author made them come to life on the page and made me feel invested in their story.

If you enjoy the genre, you will love this book. While part of a series, this is a stand alone novel, however it's so good that you really owe it to yourself to read them all. The author is on my must read authors' list.

A fast paced twisty turny tale of murder and secrets in a remote town. Oh my gosh I loved the characters especially the pups. This was well written with a solid plot that kept me guessing until the very end. The scenery was very well done plunging you into the snowy avalanche riddled location with the characters.
I adore the way the bond was written between the main character and her pup. This was a great fast paced dark read.

After an avalanche exposes multiple gravesites, Maya Thompson and her K-9 partner Juniper must catch a serial killer before they become the next targets. This thriller has plenty of outdoor and K-9 action that kept me turning the pages well into the night. A drug dog handler herself, Donnelly creates accurate scenes involving K-9 work that I appreciate and enjoy. This thriller has a light touch of romance, which in my opinion is just the right amount. I highly recommend this entertaining read!

Killer Instincts

Maya and Josh are both recovering addicts who self medicated their PTSD and are also LEO. She's K-9 with the Forestry Service and he with the Sheriff's office and they have been in a relationship for 4 months. They become entangled in situations that could be life threatening, she with a serial killer and he with a mentally unstable ex fiance. With mystery, suspense and a lot of twists and turns it all comes out a win for the white hats. Great story.

Couldn't Put It Down

This book grabbed me from the start, and I barely slept last night wanting to see what would happen next. The characters (even the dogs) are so well explored I feel that I know them. The events of the book worried me as though I was experiencing them in life. The end nicely tied up, but now I am sad that there isn't more to read! I definitely recommend this book.
