Rate this book
Dave Foreman and Howie Wolke identify America's 368 remaining wilderness areas by state and region. They describe for each the diversity of its flora and fauna, threats of industrial exploitation or commercial development, and legal status as a protected area. With practical information and a sense of urgency, The Big Outside is both a guide and an inspiration for all those interested in seeing and preserving what's left of wild America. Illustrations.

This book is co-authored by Dave Foreman and Howie Wolke, it's mislabled here. Wolke, an expert backpacking wilderness guide, and Foreman have compiled an exhaustive inventory of the largest chunks of wilderness in the United States. The book's descriptive language and helpful format are an excellent tool for those interested in knowing exactly how much wilderness is left in the U.S. It is also an extremely useful reference tool for wilderness statistics and flora/fauna of wilderness areas.

It's a fun catalog and made me wonder about areas I know little about. Will be fun to keep the book and see how things have changed in 50 years. Hopefully by not much.
