Write to Be Read is a high-intermediate to advanced writing text designed to teach ESL/EFL students to write convincing paragraphs and academic essays with greater fluency. The methodology is a blend of both process and product approaches to writing. Students focus on process as they develop their thinking about a topic through reading, discussion, and reflection. Then, using authentic student essays as models, they focus on product as they learn to shape their writing to meet the expectations of educated native readers of English. Every chapter contains two high interest reading selections that provide students with topics for reflection and discussion. Readings include extracts from nonfiction books, short stories, poems, and magazine articles. Of the eight chapters, the first two are devoted to the paragraph, the next five to essays, and the final chapter to essay exam answers. An appendix with additional exercises on specific grammar issues is included for students who need such work. Though much of writing is a solitary activity, Write to Be Read makes ample use of collaborative activities in discussion of readings and topics, in prewriting activities, and in peer review. The educational design of the book encourages students to think more clearly and critically and to develop their own voices as writers.
