Zara plans on finding a magical mate, starting a small family, and living a quiet life as a harpy in the town of Folk Haven. She does not plan on dating a sensual witch who hates magic.
When Zara’s ex messes up her chance for happily ever after, she decides to organize her approach to love. The best way to find the perfect mythical partner in life is through a thorough research and vetting process. But once she finds the right man to spend the rest of her life with, there’s the problem of seducing him. But maybe the hot new witch in town can give her a helpful boost…
Anthony Shelly avoids all things magical, but when his three siblings move to the mythic-filled town of Folk Haven, he settles in for a long visit. And what better way to pass his time than flirting with a tightly wound harpy in need of a little fun? When she asks him for a favor that would have him in her bed for a few months, the answer is an easy yes.
But as Zara uses Anthony’s temptation skills to find herself a mate, the magic-rejecting witch can’t help wondering if he could be the one to make her dreams come true instead …
Hard for a Harpy is a standalone romance in the steamy, cozy, magical Folk Haven series with a guaranteed HEA. Readers who adore Molly Harper and C.M. Nascosta will enjoy curling up with this mystical small-town romance!
Lauren Connolly is an award-winning author of contemporary and magical romance stories. She’s lived among mountains, next to lakes, and in imaginary worlds. I have to continually shoutout to Elizabeth who introduced me to this series and whose reviews of the books keep me excited for each new one!
Zara (h) and Anthony (H) were so precious. They meet at Anthony's sisters' library where Zara lays out for Anthony that she's doing research on mythics to help with her plan to have a baby (Zara's a harpy and she wants a monster baby). There's a zing between them, but nothing happens beyond that meeting. Until, Anthony moves to the town several months later to be near his family. That zing becomes a full on wanting, however they're in different life places. Zara's a small town vet who's ready to get on the track for a family of her own and she's brave enough to choose her needs each time and not compromise (I loved this). Anthony's a bit of an internal wreck, but an outward show stopper. He's an influencer/model living a luxury life that's also lacking meaning and connection. He rejects magic thanks to his awful parents, who also gave him major hang-ups, while at the same time having his own magic constantly humming and affecting his life. Because his magic causes others to want what he has, he negotiates a short-term relationship with Zara so he gets to be with her, but is also increasing her visibility to potential long-term partners. Of course we know they're going to fall in love, but the internal thoughts each has about their feelings, hell the internal thoughts in general from Anthony, were excellent. This is character-driven and relationship-focused and it's glorious. There's growth and it happens because of love, but not for love. I love this series and I wish more people read it.
Written in first person, multi-POV (mainly the H and h, but a couple of other side characters have a POV chapter here and there). No ow drama, some om drama from h's ex still wanting her and the h does attract some attention from om thanks to the H's magic. Neither are virgins (H has been with men and women just FYI but no others on page; he did get around and his past exploits were mentioned a few times, which I never love but it wasn't too bad because he's gone for the h).
Zara and Anthony were at times hilarious together, steaming up the pages other times, and deeply heart aching. Any time they were together, there was just magic for me. I found Zara to be very likable and sweet. Anthony I had a harder time with because his outwardly relaxed and casual persona grated on me. I couldn't wait to get to the moments where he was genuine to himself, esp around others. Zara is much better at being vulnerable and offering up intimacy, even knowing that she needs to keep barriers in place because of their situation. Anthony took longer to show that soft underbelly than I preferred. Spicy scene-wise though, these two were on the same page from the get-go. Anthony's giving and he loves when Zara takes agency over her pleasure. He's a bit submissive, but she's not overly dominant either.
There was a nice side-plot surrounding Anthony and magic that was also crucial to all of his relationships. He was so torn-up internally and he gets helped by a truly unlikely (and hysterical) character. This is where the growth really happens and part of growing are some pains...there's a third act breakup that was important to the characters but also painful.
The best supporting character in the story was an initially unwelcome one who scared the crap out of Anthony and led to hilariously funny scenes. The change from the initial interaction to the end was *clutches chest over my heart*. The town of Folk Haven has a full set of additional supporting characters, including many who've had their own romances already, with others to come. I adored seeing Anthony's sister Ame and her mate, Jack. Any time they were on the page, they stole the show for me and I had to re-read their book as soon as I was done with Anthony and Zara. Anthony's twin and his older sister are very present, as well as Zara's parents and her BFF. Some future romances are set-up and then there's an ongoing shady character, whose motivations we don't completely understand yet. As much as I enjoy set-ups for future stories, I didn't love some of the extra POVs because I wanted to bask in Anthony and Zara.
Despite the separation gnawing on my heart strings, the reconciliation melted my heart. Anthony does the work and shows Zara he's serious and his focus has changed. Best of all, he does it through normal daily interactions and not OTT, contrived moments. He also shows his family and esp Ame. Lots of great scenes as the book is coming to an end. The epilogue is a HEA of them mated and preggers years later and it's adorable and sweet, with a touch of last humor. I 100% recommend this series. Not all the books have tropes or characters that may fit every reader, but you can easily bounce around (I do).
This one was goooood! And it left me satisfied for the main couple and wanting more. The author really is drawing me into this town and I love it. And the whole familiar/Sin thing with Anthony is SOOO funny.
I love how this is kinda fake dating, but they decide to make it real, if short-term. It was fun to see the two enjoy each other and get to know the other person and really, really like them.
Zara is trying to recover from dating someone who couldn't accept her magical side and Anthony's parents (especially his mom) gave him a false sense of who and what he is.
I love how Zara lays down a boundary about what she will and won't accept. And it prompts Anthony (who of course has fallen in love with her) to rethink how he's living. He changes "because" of her, not "for" her. And I really, really liked that! She's clear about what she wants and he works to become that AND prove that he's made a change.
The only thing I didn't like was his history as a manwhore. I didn't think it was necessary and is so typical in romances. I think the author could have given him a history of not wanting to be tied down without also giving him a history of sleeping with everyone in sight.
Safety deets - No OW/OM for the hero. Once he meets the heroine, he does what he needs to do to get with her. At first temporarily and then later, permanently. - Kinda OM for the heroine. She's trying to find a baby daddy and future husband... so she talks to other guys and even goes on a date. But nothing really happens with anyone else. She also has an ex that keeps trying to make something work but she isn't interested and tells him so. - Lots of sexy time... neither of them are virgins. - Magical birth control used. Apparently, mythics can't get STDs so they just need to protect against pregnancy. - Good consent! - Great HEA with an epilogue 3 years out that shows them happily together.
✨ Hard for a Harpy is out today, and it's time for you to meet a life-planning harpy who wants a mate, and the magic-hating witch that disrupts her carefully arranged life. Zara & Anthony are the epitome of opposites attract!
✨ Thank you everyone who keeps visiting Folk Haven and showing my characters so much love!!! I hope you enjoy this next installment in the series!
Another amazing book in the folk haven series. Zara and Anthony are some of my favorite characters so far. And Anthony’s interactions with Sin are freaking hilarious.
This book is about Zara and Anthony. Zara is a Harpy, Anthony is a Witch. Zara wants a baby, a monster baby (mythics of different species getting a baby). Anthony doesn’t want to be a witch, he’s stuck in his social media job and he’s honestly just scared and mad at magick. In this book we see the relationship of Zara and Anthony evolve and grow, yes they have hardships but they deal with it like proper adults lol. It all ends in a satisfying HEA.
I’ve devoured the whole series, this book no exception. I love the world building a lot. Even if you haven’t read the other books, you can understand the world and the side characters.
I loved seeing a different side of Violetta in this book. She’s funny, and secretly she genuinely cares about people.
I honestly liked the whole book apart from a small part at around the 70% mark which seemed to lean a lot towards a miscommunication trope. But for me it didn’t ruin the book or anything.
I’m looking forward towards the next book, that’s for sure.
Tropes: Strangers-lovers Sort of fake dating but not really Mythics Small town
I recieved an ARC in return this is my honest revieuw.
5⭐️ 3🌶️ MOOD: lighthearted, emotional, funny TROPES: fake dating, fated mates, forbidden romance FAV QUOTE: He's just too gods-damn gorgeous. I need to know more about your lickable boyfriend - who I will not lick, of course, because he's yours.
It seems like every time I struggle with reading I have a new Folk Haven book to read :). Another great addition to the series.
THE GOOD: Anthony, a witch who denies his magic, and Zara, a harpy who knows what she wants and has been hurt in a past relationship, might be my new favorite Folk Haven couple. Both Anthony and Zara are interesting on their own - each with their own past & baggage. Their back and forth was really great and allowed for both moments of seriousness and humor without it feeling forced or outside the character's behavior. I found Anthony's innate magic really interesting while still being in line with what we already know about the Shelly family and their powers. I also really enjoyed that there is an effort at more representation in Folk Haven. It is made very clear that Zara is proud of her heritage as both a mix-raced and mix-myth species individual. Anthony's sexuality is not defined, or a plot device, but he is queer. There is also a brief mention of a Deaf character.
THE NEUTRAL: I'm not a fan of miscommunication and late story breakups but that being said, those tropes/ideas can serve a purpose and I think they do in this book. THE MEH: I'm used to these books being 2 POV and there were a few more thrown in. I understand why but I found it a little disruptive to the flow of the story.
CW (provided by author): discrimination, drugging, breaking and entering, physical assault, racism & microaggressions, pregnancy, possible infertility, loss of a pet, parental neglect & abuse
DISCLAIMER: I received this ARC and am providing my honest review.
Hmmm while I did like this, it struggles to go past anything surface. I just didn't really feel any depth. Sad/tragic/lonely back stories are heavily relied on in this series, lots of telling and explaining, idk. Definitely one of those easy to digest KU books where you basically unplug your brain and just enjoy it. I'm not complaining, I just wish there was a litttleeeee more. Idk, the author definitely pulled me in but barely kept me hooked (this is actually the case for the entire series lol)
Liked both characters well enough. Not much plot wise happens, tiny teaspoons of angst, some cozy vibes. Would I read again? Probably not but I'm still glad I read the story I suppose.
I am so unbelievably in love with the folk haven series. As a georgia girl who loves fated mates, this is my favorite one so far. I always drop everything I am doing whenever one of these books comes out, and I devour it as fast as I can. The love between each one of these people is so genuine that they feel like real people. This is the 5th book in the series, and the match ups just keep getting better! I dont want to give any spoiliers, but i love Anthony and Zara just as much as i love Ame and Jack. I can't wait for the next book!
Zara is ready to settle down with a mate and start making a family but things get a little complicated when you are a magical being. While on the hunt for Mr. Right., she encounters the handsome Anthony Shelly, a witch who refuses to embrace the powers he was born with. Although he only plans on staying in town for a short time to help out his family, Anthony offers to assist Zara in her journey to find the perfect mate.
Hard for a Harpy is an open-door paranormal romance. It is the fifth book of the Folk Haven series but it can be read as a stand-alone. While this is the first book in the series that I have read, I have the rest of them added to my immediate TBR list.
I adored the contemporary romance that I had previously read from this author but was unsure what to expect of her paranormal series. So far I am delighted! I was worried that the plot would be difficult to pick up without reading the rest of the series but everything is smoothly explained throughout the storyline.
Zara and Anthony have so much chemistry from the very beginning. Their flirty library meet-cute is perfect. I think this is the first paranormal romance I’ve read that has “fake-dating” as the main trope but it works so well here. I’m looking forward to going back and reading the rest of the series and I hope to see more of Zara and Anthony in future books.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is another tale in the town of Folk Haven, home to many mythical creatures who just try to get along with each other. If a creature mates or marries into another of it’s kind, the child becomes like it’s parents. However, when creature species are mixed, the offspring is called a monster (unfairly named I’m thinking). It probably inherits the best traits of both species but since the town is divided by allocation by type of species, it can make life difficult. Zara is a harpy and wants her own baby monster. She’s made up a list of potential candidates but needs a little help on researching and eliminating some. Anthony arrives in town but just for a short time. He’s a member of a witch family but doesn’t acknowledge it or even really want to be a witch. Besides, his mother said he’s just a figment of her imagination or magic so poor Anthony is a bit unsure of himself. He volunteers to fake date Zara to further her cause to become a mother but finds himself falling for her instead, despite his own securities. The story was cute and brought in characters of other previous adventures. I especially liked seeing Levi again (big crush). It was a little lengthy and could have been condensed a bit but still another great telling. Even mythical creatures don’t always have it easy. A fun read!
This is roller coaster ride in Folk Haven, home to mystical creatures and witches. It's hilarious and tear filled, has ups and downs and some sideways throw in. A male witch that doesn't want to be a witch and a Harpy that is proud of her feathers. I love Anthony and Zara. He is a witch and she is the harpy and they are one sexy steamy couple. She wants to have a mate and a baby, even a monster baby, he just wants her so devises his way to have her by practice dating. Excellent story, well written and a great read. I loved it. I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.
Zara, the female harpy lead, has recently broken her engagement to a human male who spent years assuring her that he loved her (but whose actions and words showed he only loved part of her). Out of practice dating, she asks Anthony, the male witch-in-denial lead, to assist her. He refuses to tutor her but agrees to date her for the two months he’s in town because his inherent magic means that others want the things/people he wants. As they start dating, their attraction becomes something more. But Anthony has never been comfortable with magic and is disgusted/repelled by it, and Zara isn’t going to have another long term relationship like that…
This story is dual POV, well written and edited, and a fantastic addition to this series - it is, by far, my favourite! I absolutely adored Anthony and sympathised with his history. I enjoyed his siblings and the family support/interactions contrasted with the parental abuse/neglect from their childhood. I enjoyed Zara’s family as well, and the history they shared. I chuckled at Anthony’s willingness to enjoy their witch-hating stories and to join in. I enjoyed the relationship development and the contrast of Zara’s small town life with his jet-setting lifestyle. I enjoyed their intimate erotic scenes and the emotional connection Anthony made with Zara’s harpy side, even before she was aware of it. I enjoyed the secondary character integration and cameos from others earlier in the series. I adored Anthony’s choice of maternal figure and chuckled at their interactions. I also appreciated that it was Anthony making the big lifestyle and employment changes to facilitate their relationship, and his new career was a great fit for his personality. I enjoyed how clearly both characters were described (in terms of appearance) and the contrast between them - I appreciate the author’s explicit careful inclusion of diversity in her world. I am loving this series and waiting on tenterhooks for the next one!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I'm always happy when a new Folk Haven book is available. I just love this mixed paranormal/human community on the shores of an enchanted lake in GA. This time, the main couple are Zara, a harpy and veterinarian who was born in Folk Haven, and Anthony, brother of two witches that are recent arrivals in Folk Haven. Anthony is a well-known influencer for high-end brands who normally jets around the world doing Insta shoots, but has come to visit his sisters for a couple of months. Because his power is to cause others to want whatever he has, he rejects magic and considers it too dangerous to be used or practiced.
When Zara and Anthony meet, there are instant sparks but Zara has just recently gotten out of a relationship in which her human boyfriend outwardly said he accepted her supernatural nature, but actually rejected it and wanted her to hide it. She is determined to find a man who will fully accept her and any supernatural child they would have but she's out of practice in dating and is a bit lacking in confidence. Initially, she and Anthony start going out just for for fun and also so that she'll be more desirable to other men (due to Anthony's magic), but they as they get more involved and Zara starts considering him for a possible serious romantic partner, she realizes that he is also rejecting his supernatural heritage and she knows she can't live with that long term.
The story was sweet, relatively low angst, and flowed easily. Various characters from previous books showed up, especially Anthony's sisters and his new werewolf brother-in-law from the previous book and I was happy to get glimpses of all of them. I'll be looking forward to the next book for sure. I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I fell in love with this series from Lauren Connolly since the first book. I love the storytelling, character growth, and how the relationship between the characters evolves slowly into love. It feels so real to me, and the small-town feeling helps so much.
Now, back to this book, Zara is a woman who knows what she wants, and she’s not afraid to go after it. She’s fierce but empathic and non-judgemental. Anthony has a major fear of who or what he truly is, and he is full of doubt and fear at times. I love how he warms up to his familiar when it shows up and how he learns to like his magic and magic in general. He comes a long way from the beginning to the end, and Zara has a great positive impact on him. I, also, love how supportive Anthony's family is, and the fact that he finds a mentor/ mother figure he never had is so lovely for him. 😇 The relationship between Zara and Anthony is beautifully explored from the beginning, and they slowly fall for each other with each interaction they have. ❤️
I like the *fake dating* trope, but I like that the author decided to go with *dating with an end date* here because I feel like they could explore so much more in the relationship this way. They knew from the beginning how they could act when they're alone, which is a blurry zone in clasic fake dating.
The epilogue was very cute, showing them after three years and happy with their little family in the making. I love them so so much! ✨️ Also, I can't wait for Mor's book. I have a few theories about it, and I can't wait to see if they are correct.
I love this series so much and this was no exception. This was Zara and Anthony’s book, the town vet and one of the Shelly siblings. Zara is trying to find her future mate to settle down with and Anthony is there to help before he leaves town again. But when things get more serious it gets really good.
I love Zara and how she refuses to except anything less than she deserves. It does cause some tension but without it I would have been mad, and it’s NOT miscommunication. Zara is amazing, she really cares about people and animals.
Anthony is great too but it did take me a little while to like him. He kind of speaks like he stepped out of a historical romance at points. Anthony has A LOT of trauma from his parents much like Ame and the rest of their siblings do. He works through this though, and actively tries to better himself for the sake of himself and others.
We also get the overall mystery of the series coming back in. There are chapters from POVs outside the main couple, like Ame from Shelter for a Shifter (my favourite of the series) and others. I love coming back to old characters that I love and seeing how they are doing.
Highly recommend!! But read in order for this series, you don’t have to read the novellas but I would because I love them.
The title for this book is absolutely horrible. I'm not sure if its referring to hard as in difficult or hard as in an erection but yikes.
I actually preferred this to the previous book in the series. It was another quick read.
Zara is a Harpy who just broke up with her human boyfriend because he's put off by that side of her. Anthony is a witch who is very anti-magic because his parents experimented on their kids.
His power results in people wanting what he has. He doesn't actually use his power but this is just a side effect. He and Zara decide to date for the remainder of his time in Folk Haven so that the other mythical men will want to date her. She wants to get married and have a monster baby.
Anthony was super submissive. I think this is the first book I've read where the man is the submissive one but I didn't hate it.
They break up due to miscommunication and I think Zara is a bit unfair in this portion of the book.
Another gorgeously loving read - it is like a full body warm hug that you just don’t want to end
The specifics of the dynamic between Zara and Anthony is completely different to any of the couples in the Folk Haven books so far, but the warm and loving feel of the book is exactly what I know and adore about this series. I love this book. Now that isn’t really a surprise, as I love all of Lauren’s Folk Haven books, but one of the things I really loved about this story is how when approaching an ‘insert standard trope here’ moment, the story bypassed the expected and took a different - oh so perfect for the characters - way instead. Another thing I love about this story, and the Folk Haven series as a whole, is that the characters’ differences, quirks, and personal preferences are explored in a wonderfully respectful manner. Zero shaming is tolerated or perpetuated by the main characters in these books.
Full disclosure: I was given an ARC of the book, however this review is my own honest opinion.
I wanted to wait and leave my review until I had finished the entire series (up to now anyway, I'm already salivating for the next installment) and oh my god. Miss Connolly does not disappoint!
I haven't read such engaging, hilarious, purely wonderful story telling as this in a long time. I was enthralled from book one and for good reason.
The characters are well thought out and leap from the page, each uniquely their own but somehow I was able to identify with each one. The story both taken individually or covered as a whole over the series is gripping, making me wonder what the next twist will be, and by the way, I'm never right 😅
I could gushing on for days and days about how much I love this series but I wouldn't want to deny you the pleasure of discovering Folk Haven for yourselves 😁
I was worried I wasn’t going to like Anthony based on what we learned last book, but, as this series as shown me, I should never doubt this author.
Anthony’s feelings were understandable as was his reactions and the reasons he was rude to his family. They came together in the end and it went well.
I LOVED that he made friends as well developed job interests, got a pet, made up with his family in this ROMANCE that also had a love interest. My TOP books are always ones that show the characters have varied lives and interests. We got a little less for Zara in this book, but that’s because we learned more about her in last book. I went into this knowing she has friends and a job she loves. She only worked on her self esteem (good for her).
So many good emotions with this book. Trying to keep it spolier free, but sooo recommend.
A fun read! Look, you can see within the first couple chapters how this story will play out, but it's a fun ride, and it's sweet!
Zara has this plan in her head of how she wants her life to go, and Anthony, who is only in town for a short time, decides to use his abilities to help her. Of course, "fake dating" is harder than it sounds with them being attracted to one another.
This story was an easy read. It was sweet, but also had some drama, especially on Anthony's end. His story was one of self-discovery, figuring out who he really is and what he wants from life, as well as navigating feelings for Zara that he didn't expect.
A Harpy and a Witch - can they find their way to each other Another great story in the Folk Haven world. I love catching up with the previous characters and being introduced to the new. This story is about veterinarian Zara’s quest for love and her longing for a family of her own and Anthony, a witch who despises his magical side. Wildly attracted to each other this novel is sexy, with lots of sexual banter, I absolutely loved it and all the characters. Looking forward to reading both Mor’s and Broderick’s stories.
What a sweet book! I adored Zara and Anthony as a couple. Over the storyline you see so much personal growth in Anthony, and I found myself so invested in his happily ever after! From the start I loved Zara as a character, she’s confident in herself and her dreams, and never failed to communicate what she wanted, which differs from a lot of typical fake dating trope novels - (where the characters go through periods of drama because of silly miscommunication). Loved Lauren’s take on the fake dating trope. An excellent addition to the Folk Haven series.
While the overall story line is familiar, the author made the story very interesting. The character development was well done and you really wanted Anthony and Zara to find their way to happiness. Both characters have immense growth to complete for them to succeed. The story felt believable. My only (very minor) negative is the last chapter felt rushed as though something were missing. There was closure on the plot lines, so I didn't feel cheated.
I can recommend this book for your reading pleasure.
I loved this new addition to the Folk Haven series! Anthony and Zara are complete opposites; Zara knows exactly who she is and what she wants (a mythical mate and a happy monster baby family) while Anthony is more insecure in himself, his future and his witch heritage. They both want each other but Anthony isn't ready to get on the Monster baby train quite yet. Their bumbling relationship and personal growth was fun to watch unfold - especially when he meets her parents. Anthony's sense of humor makes him my new favorite book boyfriend. I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
If I could live in one of these stories I might actually be willing to reside in a small town. Zara and Anthony are dealing with the very normal family and society pressures while they try and see if a relationship will help them be who they want to be. These stories have a great way of showing you perspectives of prejudice in our society and seeing how the fictional fantasy version and the normal everyday version need to be dismantled to improve our world while still having a fun HEA to look forward to.
Started the series and I'm one who is compelled to finish what I start. This book had a great story line, I loved the idea behind it, however the expletives lacked creativity and the same (crude/inappropriate) one was used for what seemed every time and every character. There was also some other content I didn't appreciate or care for that became more centralized in this book. So far, this s my least favorite of the series and could make it so it's not on my recommended list.
These opposites are attracting, folks. Anthony is a globe trotting influencer whose special emotion magic revolves around envy (which is such a compelling character trait) and Zara is a small town vet determined to settle down and raise a monster baby. They shouldn't work, but somehow Lauren pulls it off. It hits all the emotional notes it needs to underneath smoldering sexual tension, and I was rooting for these two even when things felt impossible. I love this series and I'm excited to read them again.
Lauren Connolly writes such compelling, generous, realistic (yet mythical) romances that I devour as soon as they are released. I love the sense of fate without it being overpowering, and the intertwining town makes for the perfect series backdrop. I hope for dozens more stories but was absolutely DEVASTATED to see at the end of Hard for a Harpy we will be waiting until 2024 to visit Folk Haven again. :( NOTE: they are all stand alone and HEA’s, I just want more lol.
Zara and Anthony are a good match although it does not start that way. Zara, the Harpy and Anthony are an unexpected pairing, but a wonderful one. It take a bit for Anthony to realize that Zara is for him, but it was a fun journey getting there. Love Folk Haven!!! No Spoilers! I received an ARC from the Author and I am Leaving this Totally Honest Review because I Choose to and Loved this wonderful story!!!
