Alice's Journey Beyond The Moon by R J Carter

Rate this book
"They say that the moon is made of green cheese," said Alice, stroking the lazy cat's belly. "Do you believe that, Snowball? Father says it's nothing more than a great white stone, and I suppose I ought to believe him; but really, how can one be sure without ever having been there?" So begins a truly extraordinary tale as Alice finds herself meeting all manner of strange creatures as she sets off on new adventures. This is a completely new story by R J Carter, but has been presented as if it were a lost Lewis Carroll manuscript, complete with annotations and original illustrations. This book is guaranteed to delight both children and adults.

I have to say that when I saw this title I was intrigued, I have always enjoyed the original stories of Alice's adventures, so I secured myself a copy and to see for myself.

I have to say that I was a little disappointed - this edition has illustrations and annotations which link back to the original stories (which do try and give it an air of authenticity) however for me it just didn't have that magic or atmosphere.

Now I will not give away spoilers here but I have to say that I felt this book a little too contrived. Part of the magic of Alice is the imaginative and strange places and people Alice meets. Now some of them are utter non-sense which over the years have entered mainstream language.

The problem is that much of that is used in this book and rather than feeling natural and easy flowing it feels forced and contrived and as such jars in places. It just does not have the same rhythm as the original.

Now if you read this book you will understand why (the preface pretty much lays it out) but still as a child story it was fun but a lost adventure of Alice it is not.

I struggled with this. Almost gave up twice. It's a clever concept, but tries to be too clever, and is a bit contrived. Some of it is just confusing. The artwork was nice though.

The style closely mimics that of Lewis Carroll, but somehow it just doesn't seem as magical.
