“I went out full and the Lord hath brought me home empty again.” —Ruth 1:21a As in Naomi’s case in the Bible’s book of Ruth, today there will likely be times when every believer arrives at a desolate place in the heart, truly crushed in spirit for whatever reason. Finding Fullness Again by Pastor Ralph Douglas West takes an encouraging look at the story of Naomi and Ruth to remind readers that they too can keep pressing forward—not just running on empty—despite the weight of their cares. With God all things are possible, even a brand new start in life. “Let the old things pass away,” Douglas says. “Let everything that God wants for you become new.”
This book has SO MANY LESSONS for Life: Grief/Loss after a Spouse dies, Women-Women relationships, racial tension, immigrating to a new country, Caregiving, new career with limited experience, romance/dating etiquette, redemption law, classism/sexism/racism/socialism and remarriage. All expounded from four short Biblical chapters.
I originally read this book related to my grief after divorce and was struck by Ruth's positive view of her future as a Single Women with more challenges than mine (we shared caregiver duties, low/no income and lack of male "covering"). Over a decade later, I see this book is applicable AGAIN to the death of my Mother and my Sibling.
I am trying to get over the "call me Marah" (bitter) phase of grief Naomi felt as she made it to grief's Acceptance phase.
West is a Preacher who opened the Word in a practical way but look at God!! Taking His Word to another level... PTL! Thank you, Pastor West, for bringing two fascinating women stories to relevant 21st century issues.
I enjoyed reading this. It uses the story of Ruth to help us realize that life can begin again ... we can start over again after a loss (or 3 in my case) and that none of us are exempt from experiencing loss. God has a plan for each of us. We just don't know what it is yet.
