Valeri Gorbachev is the author and illustrator of a number of children's books, both in the United States and Europe, including Nicky And The Big Bad Wolves and Where is the Apple Pie? Mr. Gorbachev immigrated to the United States from the Ukraine in 1991 and now lives with his family in Brooklyn, New York.
I like most of Valeri Gorbachev's books. I have recently begun reading "I Can Read Books" to Alena. She's 26 and has Down Syndrome and autism. I normally read picture books to her, but her attention span has increased. These types of books are sometimes easier and quicker to read than picture books. I'm happy I started reading them in an effort to read everything by particular authors like Gorbachev.
This is a "MY First I can Read Book" making the text simple for beginning readers. There is text that is repeatative throughout the book; so once a reader learns it, it will help their self esteem at beign able to read it again when they see it in the story. The illustrations are nice and eye appealing to young and old alike. I read this to my adult special needs son and he giggled and helped answer the question when I would ask "Do the hat belong to him?" and I'd point to the head of that animal. So I used it as a learning tool as well.
A got this book for Asher (4yo) to practice reading. It has very nice illustrations and is repetitive enough. Just got a little boring and he stopped reading and started "remembering" because every page was practically the same.
