The third in the Deadlands novellas, this story was okay, though wasn't as good as the previous stories.

Goff presents an interesting idea with how the vampires of this tale are raiding towns and such, and as such the story contains a lot of potential. However, due to the length restrictions of this tale, Goff was handicapped when it came to crafting a good story and instead was left with something that was just okay. The landscapes were crafted fairly well, as were the characters both old and new, so anyone reading the full series will be satisfied in that regard.

Yet in the end, the story itself was just okay and felt overshadowed by the sheer potential of the plot. The climax was over extremely quickly and what should have been a difficult situation to accomplish was achieved with very little effort. Most bandits had a hell of a time raiding trains, so for three people to have as easy of a time as they did in this story felt very unrealistic. (steampowered contraptions aside)

But if you enjoy the Deathlands world, or weird westerns, it's worth picking up. Otherwise there are other weird western novellas/novels out there that are better.
