Great Battles of World War II merupakan sebuah buku yang menghimpunkan 28 buah artikel mengenai 28 buah pertempuran hebat/besar di dalam Perang Dunia Kedua. Kesemua artikel ini ditulis oleh enam orang penulis iaitu Rupert Butler,Martin J. Dougherty,Micheal E. Haskew,Christer Jorgensen,Chris Mann dan Chris McNab. Ini menambahkan keseronokan membaca dan mampu membuatkan pembaca lebih memahami setiap pertempuran yang dibincangkan.
Adakah saya bersetuju dengan senarai pilihan ini? Jawapan yang saya berikan agak klise,tetapi,sejujurnya ada yang saya bersetuju dan ada yang tidak saya setuju. Westerplatte 1939 umpamanya agak kurang sesuai dan tidak begitu menepati apa yang saya anggap sebagai 'Pertempuran Hebat'. Agak malang juga buku ini tidak memberikan definisi dan kriteria yang jelas mengenai pertempuran-pertempuran yang layak digelar sebagai Great Battles. Saya berpendapat,Pertempuran Malaya/Singapura pada tahun 1941 - 1942 layak dimasukkan sebagai pertempuran hebat.

I already know how good this book is because it has been read to me. Now I am reading it on my own. Here are the battles in the first section of the book called The Early Years: Westerplatte, Narvik, Invasion of France - Sedan, Dunkirk, Battle of Britain, Battle for Crete, Hunt for the Bismark, Operation Barbarossa, Siege of Leningrad. In the next section called In the Balance, the battles are: Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, Convoy PQ-17, El Alamen, Battle of Guadalcanal, Stalingrad, Third Battle of Kharkov, Kursk, Battle of Imphal and Kohima and Monte Cassino. The third section is called Allied Victory and the battles are: Normany Landings, Breakout from Normandy, Philippine Sea, Warsaw Rising, Operation 'Market Garden', Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Battle for Berlin and Okinawa. That's a lot to read!

A fine, if unspectacular entry to this style of work. I have read other books that do the battles of WW2 in a similar style that are just superior. But, I can't just rank it lower for being a worse version of other books so I give it a perfectly average 3*.
The information is good but I wish there was more of it. The battle map at the end of each section was rather useless and lacking necessary detail (such as landmarks talked about in the writing not being highlighted). I think it would have benefitted from cutting these to make room for an additional two pages of writing on the battles. Another black mark was some of the black and white pictures put here. Some were very low quality but I don't believe it's an issue with the original pictures. Some I have seen elsewhere and know they are better quality than printed here. Maybe it's a bad printing, a bad scan, poor image selection. Possibly a bit of all 3, either way it's surprising considering the quality of the drawings are in this book of soldiers and equipment.
Overall, it's not bad but there are better forms of this book out there.

I believe this book is great for people who want to read about ww2 battles in a less technical way and a more straightforward way that makes reading easier for less military minded history buffs over all a good book.

Over the years I have read a number of WW2 battle books. This one is a bit different because it shows a map and the 5 or 6 strategic movements that lend to understanding the battle. The pictures and text are also well done.

Short Chapters in Somewhat chronological order. Little too much Armed Forced Details for Average Reader but enjoyed as well as bonus CD.

Great Battles Of World War II
معارك الحرب العالمية الثانية الكبرى هو كتاب صدر سنة 2013 تحت إشراف الانجليزي كريس مان ويتحدث عن أشهر معارك الحرب . وتحديدا 28 معركة صنعت فارقا سواء كان عسكريا أو سياسيا او حتى رمزيا .
في تقسيم المعارك تم إعتماد معيار كرونولوجي وذلك بتقسيم سنوات الحرب الستة إلى ثلاث مراحل :
* المرحلة الأولى تم عنونتها ب " السنوات الأولى The early years " : بدايتها كانت مع شرارة أول معركة وهي معركة شبه جزيرة Westerplatte بتاريخ 1-7 سبتمبر 1939 . بين الجيش الألماني و الجيش البولندي والتي أدت لإنطلاق الحرب العالمية الثانية. ثم معارك نارفيك شمال النرويج 1940 و غزو فرنسا 1940 و إجلاء دانكيرك الفرنسية 1940 ...وصولا لعملية بربروسا وغزو الإتحاد السوفياتي 1941 ، أما آخر معركة فكانت بداية حصار لينينغراد ( سان بطرسبورغ ) الروسية سنة 1941 .
هذه المرحلة تميزت الانتصارات السريعة الألمان- بإستثناء - معركة بريطانيا 1940 .. ومع فشل القوات النازية في اقتحام لينينغراد دخلت الحرب مرحلة جديدة .
* المرحلة الثانية أو مرحلة التوازن the balance
امتدت هذه المرحلة من 1941 وصولا ل1944 وعرفت فيها الحرب اكثر معاركها دموية و أشهرها من جهة و دخول أطراف جديدة للصراع هي اليابان والولايات المتحدة و صدرت الحرب لخارج أوروبا نحو آسيا و افريقيا و المحيط الهادئ. عندها تحولت الحرب من حرب أوروبية لحرب عالمية . تنطلق هذه المرحلة بالهجوم الياباني على قاعدة بيرل هاربر الأمريكية في جزيرة هاواي سنة 41 ثم أكبر معركة بحرية في التاريخ بين اليابان و الأمريكان في Midway سنة 42 . وفي نفس السنة تقع معركة العلمين في مصر والتي انهت التهديد الألماني في الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، و فيها أيضا تنطلق أكثر معارك الحرب العالمية الثانية دموية أي معركة ستالينغراد و مع نهايتها في السنة الموالية ستبدأ قوات المحور في الانهيار والتقهقر أمام الجيش الأحمر الذي سيحقق النصر الأكبر في أكبر معركة تستعمل فيها الدبابات في التاريخ في كورسك في جويلية من نفس السنة .
هذه المرحلة ستنتهي بمعركة مونت كازينو وسط ايطاليا في جانفي 1944 والتي بانتصار الحلفاء فيها ( و بلاء المقاتلين المغاربة فيها ) ستخرج ايطاليا نهائيا من الحرب و تخترق القلعة الأوربية من الجنوب تمهيدا للمرحلة الأخيرة .
* المرحلة الثالثة والأخيرة عنوانها هو إنتصار الحلفاء the allied victory وتمتد من 1944 ل1955 وتنطلق من أكبر عملية إنزال عسكري في التاريخ في النورمندي شمال فرنسا وبالتالي إنهيار القلعة الأوروبية وتحرير فرنسا . ثم معركة تحرير الفليبين في شرق آسيا و انتفاضة وارسو ضد النازيين ( سحقت القوات النازية المقاومة ودمرت وارسو بينما رفض الروس دعم الثوار ) وصولا لاخر معارك أوربا أي معركة برلين ، التي بنهايتها في 2 ماي 1945 إنتهى الرايخ الثالث وفي الشرق استسلم الألمان للجيش الأحمر وفي الغرب استسلموا للأمريكيين و الإنكليز.

This could be an excellent 5 star summary of important battles, but the author's words are matched with very poor illustrations. Each chapter starts with two problems. First a summary of Who/what/where/etc that is in print that is too small and then placed on a shaded background that makes it even more difficult to read. Second, there is a tiny map at the beginning of each chapter that is way too small and doesn't show enough points to really place the battle.
Each chapter ends with a large map nothing 5 or 6 points about the battle. Nice idea, but most of those maps are missing the majority of the cities, rivers and other landforms mentioned in the accompanying text!.
Great idea, very good author, poor layout and publishing.

An excellent overview of the most significant battles of World War II, accompanied by a 30 min DVD that brings the action to life. The book is filled with amazing photographs and maps that put it all in perspective. The biographical sketches of the military leaders on both sides and the "nutshell" facts of each battle at the beginning of each chapter are really interesting. A great read for anyone with an interest in World War II history, and for folks like me who were not born yet when it all happened, it shows what those who came before us must have gone through, so much of it unimaginable by today's standards. I really enjoyed it and recommend it very highly!

An excellent introduction to some of the major events in World War Two. Each battle has a map and many photos to go with it and the chronological dating helps with a general understanding of the politics as well as the military aspects of the conflict. There are also mini studies of some of the weapons and people involved in each theatre of war. I got this £20 volume for just £5 in a two-for-ten-pound deal at The Works in the UK - an excellent store with many book bargains. It well deserves the five stars on its merits but at this price it has few competitors. A superb book and an exciting read. And it comes with a free DVD!

For people who are interested in World War II, this is a great book to check out. This book covers the major engagements that happened in World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battle of Stalingrad. The book is filled with amazing pictures that show things such as soldiers in combat and the equipment that the soldiers used. Maps are also included in each chapter to show the tactical moves that each army made.
Overall, I think that this is a well-thought book that is easy and enjoyable to read. If anyone is interested in one of the most important battles that has ever taken place, this would be a great book to try out.

Overall I enjoyed it. I wished there was a bit more detail on the battle maps at the end of each chapter. Also found a couple of mistakes. The most glaring being a picture of a M3 Lee Tank in South Africa described as a British Matilda. Small issues aside, this is an excellent primer on the major battles of World War II and a welcome DVD along with!

This is a great book for people to learn about the battles of World War 2. It talks about Hitler and the allies of the Americans. I talks about D-Day, Pearl Harbor, etc. This book even shows the tactical maps of the battles. The book even talks about the effects and aftermath of each battle. It even talks about what the battle meant. This is also very accurate.

A good analysis of the major military battles of World War II, waged by or against both Germany and Japan. It contains pictures of the soldiers, weaponry and battle sites as well as battle plans and the outcome of the battles. This is a great summary for World War II buffs.

Amazing pictures. The book gives details of key battles for in WW2 along with memorable photographs.
